New-Wave and Minimal high mass Waveteef from 30 March to 1 April - Fort II - Wommelgem - B
New-Wave and Minimal high mass Waveteef from 30 March to 1 April
2018 has another edition of the Waveteef festival and this year it will start on Friday 30th of March. This year will be a mini-jubilee edition as it is the festival's fifth edition.
The cosy festival can be best to described as a three-day long high mass for obscure, but yet very danceable, New Wave in all its forms. Also this year they have again chosen for a very eclectic mix of bands.
So the Friday is the opener, Werther Effekt, a band of Brazilian ladies that are currently housed in Leipzig, Germany. Their music is raw and dirty, the way Waveteef likes it. Assertive vocals and sizzling, almost aggressive minimal synth. The second act on Friday, Blind Delon, a fairly recent band in the New Wave environment but they are already, rightly, played a lot at parties and radio shows. This three-headed band consists of young French guys who feel like fish in water in the world of drum computers and synths. The headliner on Friday night is perhaps the jewel of this line-up. The Polish band Super Girl & Romantic Boys. They play very catchy synth-pop with the necessary social criticism. Although that will be difficult to understand for the average festival goer after all, as they sing in their mother tongue...
On Saturday, Leather Ladder is the opener. If you like extravagant shows, you will certainly not be disappointed. It is a project by Petra Flurr. You could classify this band with the tag EBM but the synth-wave remains explicitly present. Then comes the melancholy sound of Tango Mangalore. This man sails the world's oceans professionally and that is also the central theme in his music. Released on the fantastic Fabrika Records label, known by insiders as the Lebanon Hannover label. The headliner on Saturday is Circa Tapes, a one-man project that combines electro, techno and minimal synth with the necessary dark touch. The tracks are exhilarating and extremely danceable.
Sunday, the third and final day of the Waveteef festival, starts with Raderkraft. Although this Dutch project supports electro influences, their main inspiration came from the Neue Deutsche Welle. Very exciting tracks with German vocals. As a second act for Sunday you will get the Belgian Luminance. No longer unknown in the Belgian New Wave scene and that is absolutely well deserved. The music is very emotional, melancholic and yet extremely danceable. As headliner on Sunday, there is finally Pure Ground, an American band that seeks its influences in the industrial and noise world but also remains faithful to the minimal synth genre. These guys have stage presence and will undoubtedly blow you away!
Of course there is also a wide range of international DJs who play the best of the new wave / Neue Deutsche Welle / minimal synth / postpunk and Italo disco. Those DJs are explicitly asked by the organizers not to play classics but to look for other danceable pearls in the bottomless pit called New Wave.
The festival takes place in one of the quarters of the great 19th century fortress of Wommelgem (Antwerp) / JH De WOMMEL (Fort II street).

This month it is 41 years ago Kraftwerk released Trans Europe Express (March 1977), their sixth studio album. The album was recorded during the summer of 1976 in their Kling Klang Studios and released on their own label Kling Klang Records. Two singles were taken from this album, Trans-Europe Express and Showroom Dummies. It was the first Kraftwerk album that was recorded in two different versions. One in English, one in German. The song Showroom Dummies was also released in France and Belgium as Les Mannequins, with the lyrics sung in French. The original German title was Schaufensterpuppen.
Musically Kraftwerk again moved further away from their improvised instrumental Krautrock style, fine tuning their tracks into more melodic electronic compositions.
The introduction of the analogue and customized 32-step Synthanorma Sequenzer with 16 channels was an important game-changer on this record. Kraftwerk also went to railway bridges to listen and analyze the sound of trains passing by which they altered slight to make it more danceable.
The lyrics on Trans Europe Express refer to David Bowie’s album Station To Station and to the actual event of Rafl Hütter and Florian Schneider meeting Bowie in Germany. At that time Bowie was living and recording in Berlin with Iggy Pop (The Stooges). Ralf Hütter refered several times to Iggy Pop And The Stooges as his most favourite band.
Joy Division singer Ian Curtis introduced Kraftwerk to his bandmates and insisted Trans Europe Express was played every time before the band went on stage.
Siouxsie And The Banshees covered the song The Hall Of Mirrors on their cover album Through The Looking Glass (1987). A cover version that todays only remaining original Kraftwerk member today, Ralf Hütter, hailed in glowing terms as extraordinary version.
Many still see this album as one of the most important pop albums of the last decades.

24.03 LeFantastique.Night XLXIV with Bettina Köster (Malaria!) & Mona Mur!
LeFantastique.Night XLXIV
Botanique (chicory bar) - Brussels - 24 March 2018 - 20:00
With this 54th edition, Fantastique.Night returns to the Berlin of the late 1980s, during the endless nights, the Cold War and the sultry Berlin. Two musicians created a furore: Bettina Köster (Malaria !, Mania D., Matador) and Mona Mur, at the head of an all-star band, including Alexander Hacke and FM Einheint from Einstürzende Neubauten. They were mainly occupied with what lived underground and had a maniacal intensity, with slow rhythms, morbid but yet stylish. Together they created a style that would last a long time yet. Koster then moved to New York and Italy, while Mur went to Poland, both without stopping their musical activities. In the Summer of 2017 Bettina Köster released her album Kolonel Silvertop, and we can also expect a new album by Mona Mur in the spring of 2018.
These two icons each receive reinforcements from, respectively, En Esch (ex-KMFDM) for Mona Mur and Klaus Krüger (Tangerine Dream, Iggy Pop) for Bettina Köster. Hano-Ah will open and warm up the audience.
As always, the concerts will be provided with appropriate DJ sets, before, in between and after!

Today, exactly 28 years ago, Nine Inch Nails released their second single Head Like a Hole!
Today, exactly 28 years ago, Nine Inch Nails released their second single Head Like a Hole (HALO 3) taken from their debut album Pretty Hate Machine.
The single received massive critical acclaim and got heavy rotation on radiostations and MTV. Head Like A Hole became an instant (underground) hit and remains upon today still one of NIN’s main artifacts.
The song was covered by many artists since, amongst those DEVO and Nu-Metal band Korn.
Head Like A Hole - Lyrics
God money I'll do anything for you.
God money just tell me what you want me to
God money nail me up against the wall.
God money don't want everything he wants it all.
No you can't take it
No you can't take it
No you can't take that away from me
No you can't take it
No you can't take it
No you can't take that away from me
Head like a hole.
Black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
Head like a hole.
Black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.
God money's not looking for the cure.
God money's not concerned with the sick among the pure.
God money let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised.
God money's not one to choose
No you can't take it
No you can't take it
No you can't take that away from me
No you can't take it
No you can't take it
No you can't take that away from me
Head like a hole.
Black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
Head like a hole.
Black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve
You're going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.
Head like a hole.
Black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
Head like a hole.
Black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.

Today it’s exactly 28 years ago that Nitzer Ebb released their third studio album Showtime on Mute Records (STUMM 72 / 20 March 1990).
The album has a whole has a very cohesive, uniform sound, despite each song being very unique, ranging from the more EBM-like Rope to the almost Industrial-Rock-ish Getting Closer. Three singles were taken from this album and released separately, Lightning Man, Fun To Be Had and Getting Closer.
