Regarding big names, there is no shortage at all in this prestigious series. First, there are Eva Green and Josh Hartnett, but alsoTimothy Dalton, who was known in ancient times as James Bond. And there are more 007 connections in this Victorian horror series, because the producer is Sam Mendes and that is indeed the director of the latest Bond movies. And to make it all complete the series is written by John Logan, who also created the scripts for Gladiator and The Aviator, but also Skyfall.

This first season with eight episodes exists both on DVD and Blu-ray and can appeal to a very broad audience: from horror fans to those who like the more traditional dramas with real content. Just like the many superheroes in Gotham, many famous horror characters show up here. Dracula, the Wolfman, Frankenstein, Dorian Gray or Van Helsing, they all have a place in this series. The title is a reference to the London tabloids of the 19th century, that were keen on horror stories of creatures like Jack The Ripper.

Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) is a nobleman whose daughter Mina (Olivia Llewellyn) is kidnapped by a vampire. Everything seems to be associated with Ancient Egypt and he hires all sorts of individuals who can assist him to save his child. At first glance, this concept is like the one from series that you have already seen (the latest version of Dracula with Jonathan Rhys Meyer, to name one), but Penny Dreadful is of a very different (and better) level. Especially the mix of fantasy and fiction works very well, and you will find in the streets of London many real characters that give this horror series another dimension. Tip!

Aan ronkende namen is er helemaal geen gebrek in deze prestigieuze serie. Allereerst is er naast de verschijning van Eva Green en Josh Hartnett, ook Timothy Dalton, die in vroegere tijden bekend stond als James Bond. En er zijn nog meer 007-connecties in deze Victoriaanse horrorserie, want de producer is Sam Mendes en hij is inderdaad de regisseur van de meest recente Bond-films. En om het helemaal compleet te maken is de reeks bedacht door John Logan, die niet alleen Gladiator en The Aviator schreef, maar ook Skyfall.

Deze reeks, waarvan het eerste seizoen uit 8 afleveringen bestaat, is zowel op dvd als op Blu-ray beschikbaar en kan een zeer breed publiek aanspreken: van horrorliefhebbers tot kijkers die het meer hebben voor traditionele drama’s met inhoud. Net zoals je in Gotham alle superhelden de revue ziet passeren, komen in Penny Dreadful heel wat bekende horrorpersonages aan bod. Dracula, de wolfman, Frankenstein, Dorian Gray of Van Helsing: allemaal hebben ze een plaatsje in deze reeks. De titel is een hommadge aan de sensatieblaadjes uit het London van de 19^e eeuw die verkikkerd waren op gruwelverhalen van creaturen zoals bijv. Jack The Ripper.

Alles lijkt verband te hoiden met het oude Egypte en hij huurt allerlei individuen in die hem kunnen bijstaan om zijn kind te redden. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt dit concept veel op series die je al vaker hebt gezien (de laatste Dracula-versie met Jonathan Rhys Meyer, om maar eentje te noemen), gelukkig is Penny Dreadful van een heel ander (beter) niveau. Vooral hetvermengen van fantasie en fictie lukt aardig, zo tref je in de straten van Londen heel wat personages die daar destijds ook rondliepen, waardoor deze horrorserie toch een andere dimensie krijgt. Je merkt ook, zowel in de vertolkingen als in de knappe scenario’s, dat dit niet de zoveelste serie is die vliegensvlug in elkaar is gekunsteld om te kunnen profiteren van de niet te stoppen trein van series. Absoluut meepikken is de boodschap!
