There is every year something wrong with the winner of the Golden Palm. The modal film fan often does not understand it, or he simply sees no reason why a film is hailed. Last year's winner La Vie d'Adèle got a lot of controversy. So much in fact, that one would forget that it is one of the best movies ever. Yes, there is a lot of nudity, and yes, you can see in close-up how Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos lick each other's body. Some call it vulgar pornography, others call it just a beautiful part of life. Anyway, a girl who is licking the vagina of another girl is still better to watch a football hooligan beating up an innocent guy, not? Besides, La Vie d'Adèle is more than that, and those who just whine about the naked scenes, probably have not understood the essencet.

Director Abdellatif Kechiche took his inspiration from the comic Le Bleu Est Une Couleur Chaude by Julie Maroh. Personally, I prefer the English title (Blue Is The Warmest Colour) because it says more about the film. Adèle (Adele Exarchopoulos) is studying literature. As a fifteen year old girl she does not really know what she wants. She can get the cutiest boy from the class, but already from the first kiss she feels that she did not wait for that all her life. Everything changes when she sees a girl with blue hair at the town square of Lille. Adèle falls madly in love with the older Emma (Léa Seydoux). Don’t expect a happy love story, however. The young girl is struggling with the fact that she’s a lesbian (she never dare to tell it to her parents), and her world is miles away from the one of tomboy Emma. Emma is an artist and is always surrounded by people who know all about art, while Adele can only name Picasso. Despite the differences, the two start a passionate love affair, but already from the first kiss, the black clouds come above.

La Vie d'Adèle is a stunning love story. Thanks to the strong performances, the 180 minutes (yes!) never bores and you’ll sit on the edge of your seat wondering if Adèle will win forever Emma’s heart. In addition to an excellent screenplay, this film also benefits from the excellent directing by Abdellatif Kechiche, which is situated somewhere between the Dardenne brothers and François Truffaut. Three hours seems long, but there's not a second of boredom. The core of the story (a lesbian who is in doubt) has been told a thousand times in gay movies, but never so grandiose like here. La Vie d'Adèle is certainly not only a gay movie, this is cinema standing on a lonely peak and perhaps the best film of the last decade. Indispensable.

Er is ieder jaar wel iets aan de hand met de Gouden Palmwinnaar. De modale filmkijker begrijpt het niet, of hij ziet geen enkele reden waarom een film bejubeld wordt. Vorig jaar won La Vie d'Adèle en door al de controverse zou een mens wel eens durven vergeten dat het één van de allerbeste films ooit is. Ja, er komt heel wat bloot in voor, en ja, je kunt in close-up zien hoe Léa Seydoux en Adèle Exarchopoulos elkaars lichaam bepotelen en aflikken. Sommige noemen het vulgaire porno, anderen vinden het gewoon een deel van het leven. Wat je ook denkt, een meisje dat de vagina van een ander meisje likt is nog altijd mooier om te zien dan een of andere voetbalhooligan die een onschuldig iemand in elkaar ramt. Maar goed, La Vie d'Adèle is meer dan seks, en wie alleen maar over de blootscènes zeurt, heeft waarschijnlijk niets van de film begrepen.

Regisseur Abdellatif Kechiche haalde zijn inspiratie uit de strip Le Bleu Est Une Couleur Chaude van Julie Maroh. Persoonlijk hou ik meer van de Engelse titel (Blue Is The Warmest Colour) omdat die meer over de film zegt. Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos) studeert literatuur. Als vijftienjarig meisje weet ze nog niet echt wat ze wil. Ze kan wel de knapste jongen van de klas krijgen, maar al vanaf de eerste kus voelt ze dat dit niet is waarop ze heel haar leven heeft gewacht. Alles verandert als ze op het stadsplein van Lille een meisje met blauw haar ziet. Adèle wordt vanaf de eerste blik verliefd op de oudere Emma (Léa Seydoux). Een gelukkig liefdesverhaal wordt het leven van Adèle echter niet. Het jonge meisje worstelt niet alleen met haar lesbische geaardheid (zo durft ze het nooit aan haar ouders te vertellen), maar haar wereld staat mijlenver af van die van tomboy Emma. Emma is een kunstenares die zich laat omringen door mensen die alles van kunst afweten, terwijl Adèle gewoon kleuteronderwijzeres wil worden en alleen maar Picasso kan opnoemen. De twee beginnen desondanks de verschillen een passionele liefde, maar al vanaf de eerste aanraking drijven er zwarte wolken.

La Vie d'Adèle is een liefdesverhaal zoals ze veel te weinig gemaakt worden. Dankzij de ijzersterke acteerprestaties, zit je 180 minuten (jawel!) op het puntje van je stoel je af te vragen of Adèle voor eeuwig het hart van Emma zal kunnen winnen of niet. Naast een oerdegelijke scenario, profiteert deze film ook nog van de puike regie van Abdellatif Kechiche, die zich ergens tussen de Dardenne-broers en François Truffaut situeert. Drie uur lijkt lang, maar er is geen seconde verveling. De kern van het verhaal (een lesbisch meisje dat twijfelt) is al duizend keer in holebifilms aan bod gekomen, maar nog nooit zo grandioos als hier. La Vie d'Adèle is trouwens geen holebifilm, het is cinema die op eenzame hoogtepunt staat en misschien wel de allerbeste film van de afgelopen tien (vijftien) jaar. Onmisbaar.
