The next disc on our pile that awaits a judgement is one that is coming from the 88 Films-stable. Arcade is once again such a production from Full Moon Entertainment that ended straight on the video market, and today can only be found (if you’re lucky and interested) at the flea market. But today, for those who care, it’s available on DVD.


The big selling point from this production is of course the short presence of John de Lancie: a name that is known amongst all Trekkies because he’s the man who plays Q: the villain from Star Trek, The Next Generation. A highlight that won’t impress other earthlings. De Lancie plays the role of a salesman who sells a very weird videogame that is extremely popular. Alex (Megan Ward) doesn’t trust the whole thing, and she’s right. The players are literally sucked into the game and as the rules are rather sadistic, people are dying.


You have the Disney-classic Tron in mind? That’s far from stupid, but of course you have to bear in mind that this is a product from the small company Full Moon Entertainment, and so the special effects look cheap (not to mention the word stupid, but that’s cult!) The biggest problem however is that this sci-fi horrormovie might please cultfanatics, but there are probably not enough bloody scenes to convince the horror fans.


Anyway, those who are longing to (re)discover or reject this 15 year old picture can check out the catalogue from 88 Films as it’s in there…

Het volgende schijfje dat op onze beoordeling ligt te wachten is er eentje uit de 88 Films-stal. Arcade is zijn titel en het is wederom zo’n productie die destijds regelrecht op de videomarkt werd gegooid en die je tegenwoordig alleen maar op de rommelmarkt voor 50 eurocent op een versleten videotape kan vinden (en door geen kat wordt meegenomen).


De trekpleister van deze B-film is zonder meer het rolletje van John de Lancie, een naam die onmiddellijk een belletje doet rinkelen bij Trekkies omdat hij Q, de slechterik uit Star Trek, The Next Generation is. Een hoogtepunt waar andere aardbewoners nauwelijks hun slaap voor zullen laten. Zijn verschijning is trouwens van korte duur, hij is de verkoper van een videospel dat ongelooflijk populair is. Alex (Megan Ward) ruikt onraad en vertrouwt de game die ook bekend staat als Dante's Inferno niet. Je zou voor minder, want de spelers worden letterlijk in het videospel opgezogen en door de sadistische spelregels vallen er geregeld doden.


U denkt aan de Disney-klassieker Tron terwijl u dit leest? Groot gelijk, alleen is deze productie er eentje van Full Moon Entertainment en dat betekent dus dat de kijker genoegen moet nemen met special effects die soms naar het potsierlijke neigen. Deze sci-fi horrorprent zal misschien wel cultfanaten kunnen plezieren, maar bezit toch te weinig schrikmomenten om griezelfanaten te bekoren. Een niemendalletje uit de doos van de jaren 90 dus.


Wie zin heeft om de vreemde sci-fi culthorror van zo’n vijftien jaar terug (en die nu al gedateerd lijkt) te herbeleven kan bij 88 Films voor deze heruitgave terecht.
