Twenty-five years after the words “Access granted” first echoed through dark clubs and crowded dancefloors, Apoptygma Berzerk releases Kathy’s Song XXV via Pitch Black Drive.
Back in the early 2000s, club life happened without filters or phone screens. You went out to be present. Tracks were allowed to run, moods were allowed to grow, and the music had room to breathe. Kathy’s Song slid into that world effortlessly — it didn’t demand attention, it earned it, and it never left.
Because here’s the thing: Kathy’s Song remains part of the Top 10 repertoire for DJs across Europe to this day. Not because of nostalgia, but because it fits. DJs trust it, and dancefloors respond. That kind of longevity can’t be forced.
Ultimately, it all comes down to Stephan Groth. As the mastermind behind Apoptygma Berzerk, he has always had a rare feel for emotion and timing. His strength lies in making electronic music feel human without losing its electronic core. Kathy’s Song works because it understands space — on the floor, in the room, and inside the listener.
The 25th anniversary edition of Kathy’s Song presents the track in four versions, each offering a different way into its essence.
Ferry Corsten 2025 Remix
You might recall this one — it’s actually a rework of Corsten’s 2000 remix. Ferry Corsten, the Dutch DJ and producer and one of the most established names in melodic electronic music, gives Kathy’s Song a new, clearer arc. The remix grows patiently, layering energy and anticipation until it reaches a defined, uplifting peak that lifts the room without pushing beyond the song’s character. It fits perfectly into a modern DJ set while still unmistakably feeling like Apop’s Kathy’s Song.
Zone Tripper Remix
Zone Tripper, the side project of Norwegian artist Alexandria “Alyxx” Digre (Technomancer), takes Kathy’s Song into darker, heavier territory. Her remix leans into classic dark electro, with a steady pulse and real weight behind it. Focused and driving from start to finish, it’s built to keep the floor moving rather than opening things up. The mood is tougher around the edges — dark, solid, and highly danceable. Definitely a must for 2026 dancefloors.
Mental Overdrive Remix
Per Martinsen, the man behind Mental Overdrive and a long-standing figure in Norwegian electronic music, takes Kathy’s Song in a more minimalistic direction. This version strips things back, focusing on a steady groove, space, and repetition rather than layers or embellishment. It feels restrained and deliberate, letting the track work through subtle movement instead of obvious effects — a minimal take that trusts the strength of the song itself.
Single Version
Ending with the original single version remains the strongest statement. It carries a sense of home, tied to youth and the inevitable feeling of familiarity. No updates, no polish — just the song as it has always been. Released in 2000, it still holds up on its own terms and never needed fixing.
This anniversary edition doesn’t try to rewrite history — it acknowledges it. The release shows why this track continues to work across decades, formats, and listening habits. It remains emotionally present without needing explanation or justification. Some songs age, some disappear — Kathy’s Song simply keeps finding its place in time.
Kathy’s Song XXV is available now via Bandcamp and all major streaming services.
