It was a fine day when the announcement came, on November 16, 2023, that exactly 1 year later, on November 16, 2024, IC 434 would celebrate their 30th anniversary, and that noteworthy on the stage where it all started in 1994: at the fortress of Wommelgem. Back then with Stin Scatzor, Ionic Vision and Suicide Commando, now with HerrNia, Deleritas and Euphoric Existence. As the event approached, HerrNia was replaced by Darkvolt.

Darkvolt, who played their very first live concert here. Something that is actually hard to believe: this was an opener that stands out from anything else. Now, with the well-known Sam Devos on keyboard, vocalist Frederik was backed up by someone with experience (he was part of For Greater Good, among others).

It was an almost perfect set, in which they played a series of top songs from their 2 albums. Yes: their first live set, but they already have 2 albums to their credit. Piece by piece great danceable tracks formed a fine coherent whole. Both visually and musically the picture was perfect. We can only hope that they get picked up and can be seen more often on various stages. In any case, it tasted sweet.

After them: one of the leading bands in the Walloon part of our country when it comes to industrial and danceable beats. I simply cannot be more objective about Deleritas. I was a fan from their first album and have seen them at work several times, especially during home games in Liege. Now, our country is a molehill and yet there is a noticeable difference between the Flemish and Walloon scene. So I was somewhere nervous on their behalf (though they were nervous enough themselves), because what would that give? Well, they outdid themselves. AND you can tell that from the reactions on social media after the performance. I already read that it was their best set ever (dixit IC434), 'pounding show that will be remembered for a long long long time' (according to one Vain, also known as the singer of CauseNation and organizer of the evening) to a 'add a guitar and you've got Feindflug' according to a visitor. In short: it was more than just good!

On to the party animal of the evening. IC 434, Geert De Wilde's project, joined on keyboards this time by Jan Dewulf, one of those other icons but from the coast. For those who can't find the clapper: feel free to look up Mildreda.

It was clear that the room was in the right mood. Moving bodies from front to back. And who would think that after 5 years of silence the music would rust I can say that Geert used a whole carton of WD40. No trace of rust to be found.

With a setlist neatly divided between the various releases, IC 434 brought an overview of what they had (and still have) to offer. Let's face it: their catalog is not that extensive with 5 albums, but quality over quantity: each and every one of them are gems that really should be in everyone's collection. A re-release of the out-of-print pieces is imminent! The same clearly applies to the performances. Only sporadically does the intergalactic horsehead take the stage, only when the stars are really good. But when they are right, then you can take it as venom that they actually pop like comets. When the band and audience align and feel like it, you get what we got here too: a touch of magic. I'm already taking out my star calendar to see when the stars will align, because who knows, maybe someday we'll make it and see IC 434 back on a stage... Never say it was one last concert.

Euphoric Existence was given the difficult task of ending the chapter. With noticeably fewer people (a lot of corpi were looking to cool off outside) Koen and Bart put on a very solid performance. I think it was the 4th or 5th time I saw them and each time they still managed to captivate the listeners. Only downside: I had the feeling that it all sounded a bit louder now and a splitting headache caused a forced pause in the corridors of the fortress. Too bad, because after all, this is a band that can come out solid live.

The afterparty (and the interludes between performances) were provided by DJ's Peter Melis and DJ PK. No surprises in the sets, but great (and at times nostalgic) beats that still got me on the dance floor for a while before returning home. Satisfied, tired and with what would turn out to be sore feet the following day: the body felt it had been good.

Het was een fijne dag toen op 16 november 2023 de aankondiging kwam dat exact 1 jaar later, op 16 november 2024, IC 434 hun 30ste verjaardag zou vieren en dat nota bene op het podium waar het in 1994 allemaal begon: in het fort van Wommelgem. Toen met Stin Scatzor, Ionic Vision en Suicide Commando, nu met HerrNia, Deleritas en Euphoric Existence. Dichter bij het event werd HerrNia vervangen door Darkvolt.

Darvolt, die hier hun allereerste live-concert speelde. Iets wat eigenlijk moeilijk te geloven is: dit was een opener om ‘u’ tegen te zeggen. Nu, met op keyboard de welbekende Sam Devos, was zanger Frederik wel geruggesteund door iemand met ervaring (hij was o.a. deel van For Greater Good).

Het was een nagenoeg perfecte set, waarin ze een resem topnummers speelden uit hun 2 albums. Jawel: hun eerste live, maar wel al 2 albums op hun conto. Stuk voor stuk fijne dansbare tracks die een fijn samenhangend geheel vormden. Zowel visueel als muzikaal klopte het plaatje als een bus. We mogen alleen maar hopen dat ze opgepikt worden en meer op de diverse podia te zien mogen zijn. Het smaakte in elk geval zoet.

Na hen één van de toonaangevende bands in het Waalse deel van ons land als het op industriële en dansbare beats komt. Over Deleritas kan ik simpelweg niet meer objectief zijn. Al van hun eerste plaat was ik fan en heb hen reeds meerdere keren aan het werk gezien, vooral dan tijdens thuiswedstrijden in Luik. Nu, ons land is een molshoop groot en toch is er een merkbaar verschil tussen de Vlaamse en Waalse scene. Ik was dus ergens nerveus in hun plaats (al aren ze zelf ook zenuwachtig genoeg), want wat zou dat geven? Wel, ze hebben zichzelf overtroffen. EN dat merk je ook uit de reacties op sociale media na het optreden. Ik las al dat het hun beste set ooit was (dixit IC434), ‘pounding show that will be remember for a long long time’ (volgens ene Vain, ook gekend als de zanger van CauseNation en organisator van de avond) tot een ‘zet er een gitaar bij en je hebt Feindflug’ volgens een bezoeker. Kortom: het was meer dan zo maar goed!

Op naar het feestbeest van de avond. IC 434, het project van Geert De Wilde, werd deze keer aan de keyboards versterkt met Jan Dewulf, een van die andere ikonen maar dan van aan de kust. Voor wie de klepel niet vindt: zoek gerust eens Mildreda op. 😊

Het was duidelijk dat de zaal er zin in had. Bewegende lijven van voor tot achter. En wie zou denken dat na 5 jaar stilzwijgen de muziek zou roesten kan ik zeggen dat Geert een hele karton WD40 heeft gebruikt. Van roest geen spoor.

Met een setlist die netjes verdeeld is over de verschillende releases, bracht IC 434 een overzicht van wat ze in hun mars hadden (en nog steeds hebben). Laat ons wel wezen: hun catalogus is niet zo heel uitgebreid met 5 albums, maar kwaliteit gaat boven kwantiteit: stuk voor stuk zijn het pareltjes die eigenlijk in iedersd collectie zoenu moeten zitten. Een re-release van de uitverkochte stukken dringt zich op! Hetzelfde geldt duidelijk voor de optredens. Slechts sporadisch komt het intergalactische paardenhoofd het podium op, enkel als de sterren echt goed staan. Maar als ze goed staan, dan mag je er gif op nemen dat ze ook echt knallen als kometen. Als de band en publiek zich aligneren en er zin in hebben, dan krijg je wat we ook hier kregen: een vleugje magie. Ik neem er al mijn sterrenkalender bij om te zien wanneer de sterren zich in stelling brengen, want wie weet komt het er ooit toch nog eens van en zien van IC 434 terug op een podium… Zeg nooit dat het een laatste concert was.

Euphoric Existence kreeg de moeilijke taak om aan het hoofdstuk een einde te breien. Met merkbaar minder volk (heel wat corpi zochten wat afkoeling buiten) zetten Koen en Bart een heel degelijke prestatie neer. Het was denk ik de 4de of 5de keer dat ik ze zag en steeds weten ze toch de luisteraars te boeien. Enige nadeel: ik had het gevoel dat het nu allemaal iets luider klonk en een barstende hoofdpijn zorgde voor een noodgedwongen pauze in de gangen van het fort. Jammer, want het is toch een band die live stevig uit de hoek kan komen.

De afterparty (en de intermezzi tussen de optredens) werden verzorgd door DJ’s Peter Melis en DJ PK. Geen verassingen in de sets, wel fantastische (en bij wijlen nostalgische) beats die me toch nog even op de dansvloer kregen alvorens huiswaarts te keren. Voldaan, moe en met wat de dag erna zere voeten zouden blijken: het lichaam voelde dat het goed was geweest.
