Florentine duo Dystopian Society is back with a second full length CD release, titled Overturned Reality.

Lyrically, it’s a terrifically grim and paranoid release. They have captured something of the spirit of art movements like the Situationist International in their analysis of media commodification of ourselves and societies march to capitalist annihilation. There isn’t a happy ending in sight with lyrical compositions like “There is nothing left, Feeding on emptiness, Discarded and wasted.”

Vocals are mostly provided by singer Max with Sara chiming in on chorus to provide an almost choir like contrasting refrain on some tracks. The basic 3-piece deathpunk setup (drums, bass, guitar, vocals) adds to the stark apocalyptic effect. Altogether it is an excellent, if chillingly uncomfortable cacophony of disaffect.

Dystopian Society, het duo uit Firenze, is terug met een tweede cd: Overturned Reality.

De teksten klinken best grimmig en het gaat er bij momenten vrij paranoïde aan toe. Ze gaan vaak over de commerciële media en de kapitalistische vernietiging, en je merkt invloeden van kunstrichtingen zoals de Situationist International (een beweging die verwantschap vertoont met het dadaïsme en het surrealisme). Van een gelukkige afloop is geen sprake, woorden als There is nothing left, Feeding on emptiness, Discarded and wasted zeggen meer dan genoeg.

De vocals worden meestal door zanger Max verzorgd, met af en toe Sara die er tussen glipt en met haar bijna koorachtig gezang voor het nodige contrast zorgt. Voor de rest zweert dit deathpunktrio trouw aan de gebruikelijke set up die typisch is voor het genre (drums, bas, gitaar, zang). Hun apocalyptische muziek is wel een allesbehalve gemakkelijke kakofonie, maar het blijft desalniettemin ijzingwekkend goed.
