KRAAK
30/10/2011, Chris KONINGS

Gerard Herman studies in Gent, Belgium and this is actually part of his graduation project. He started in 2007 with a self produced noise CDR that obviously didn't sell at all, cried in his bedroom for a while and then turned towards the freejazz combo Sheldon Siegel. He also plays for Richting Huiswaarts (homeward bound), Kian Sandalen and Muddy Wauters, all bands featured on small DIY labels like Onderstroom Records, Ultra Eczema, Reeshønd and Taped Songs.

Arguably the most arty and weird record ever to come out on the KRAAK label, Gerard uses a combination of Suicide beats, self-made instruments and concrete music. Some ideas are great like the little word game "Come on dear, no commander!" or "Lay there, no leader" and that goes on for quite some time, using also Flemish words that rhyme with a peculiar double meaning.

All these field recordings and sound collages are cut into pieces and thrown together in a seemingly disorderly fashion, I hear ethnic music, a shop assistant telling you what's on sale at the butchers and other spoken word parts. It's a nice portrait of a young man searching for his own place and style. It's pretentious but intriguing and insane but daunting. Question is how many times can you listen to these personal snippets?
