Morbid Poetry is a German Gothic Rock band formed in 1989. The current core of the band consists of Andreas Schaffrath, who is responsible for all instruments, and Sebastian Groll as vocalist.
Still active after 36 years. Albeit no longer live. I am one of those lucky bastards who got to see them at the Belgian music club De Media on October 23, 1999. My still eternal thanks to Ruben Saey who advised me to come along. For me, after having seen many hundreds of performances, they are still one of the ones closest to my heart.
They already released great albums (all, by the way, available for free download on their site, asking you to support one of the charities with the money you would normally give to music). And in January 2025, they released the new EP Stand Your Ground. They continue to play solid straightforward Goth Rock. With sniffs of Sisters Of Mercy, Fields, Elusive, Nosferatu,... But also and especially 'just' Morbid Poetry. 7 songs they give us. And that is to be taken literally.
No big recording budgets, they never did. That's why it sounds so pure. So honest. Their own Doctor Avalanche takes care of the rhythm sections, Andreas controls all the other instruments. And yep, after a few listens, I'm whisked back to 1999.
Break The Silence is such a pure song. Solid guitars, synths sparingly in the background, melody and solo work. Voice a little less polished and a little more years of service, but the picture is still right. This is the gothic rock that is still too little made.
A ballad like Gone makes you get goosebumps. Then when the guitars add a pinch of melancholy pain, it's a deep black party all the way through. Happiness is far away.... and everything is gone... screams out the anguish. Sea Of Lost Souls is another ballad with a slightly more indie sound.
Is It Real or just illusions in my head, is it real, did I lose control instead... Well, I am losing them with every listen. Because each time new layers from the music hit me. Like live every sound penetrated your body like a needle. Is It Real? Yes it is!

Abrasive guitars on the front line on Belong Here. Lead and rhythm guitars in blissful choreography. Moving around and with each other. One in the lead, the other following meekly. Winding. Female vocals making it a bit more digestible.
And although Stand Your Ground is the name of this EP, it's No. 7 on the EP. Slowly, from a rather subdued intro of over 3 minutes, a solid rocker unfolds. A tight lead. Which towards the end of this (yes!) 9-minute song really pounds around very heavily.

Thank you Morbid Poetry. For moving me. For wrapping me up once again. For giving the world Gothic Rock of an incredible level. And The Dance Goes On. Isn't it?

Morbid Poetry is een Duitse gothic rockband die in 1989 werd opgericht. De huidige kern van de band bestaat uit Andreas Schaffrath, die verantwoordelijk is voor alle instrumenten, en Sebastian Groll als zanger.
Na 36 jaar nog steeds actief. Zij het dan niet meer live. Ik ben dan één van die lucky bastards die hen op 23 oktober 1999 in de Belgische muziekclub De Media aan het work mocht zien. Mijn nog steeds eeuwige dank aan Ruben Saey die me aanraadde mee te gaan. Voor mij, na vele honderden optredens te hebben gezien, nog steeds één van diegene die ma het meest aan het hart liggen.
Ze brachten al geweldige albums uit (allemaal trouwens gratis te downloaden op hun site, met de vraag één van de goede doelen te steunen met het geld dat je normaal aan muziek zou geven). En in januari 2025 verscheen de nieuwe EP Stand Your Ground. Ze blijven stevige rechttoe rechtaan gothrock spelen. Met snuifjes SIters Of Mercy, Fields, Elusive, Nosferatu, … Maar ook én vooral ‘gewoon’ Morbid Poetry. 7 nummers schenken ze ons. En dat is létterlijk te nemen.
Geen grote opnamebudgetten, hebben ze nooit gedaan. Vandaar dat het zo puur klinkt. Zo eerlijk. Hun eigenste dokter Avalanche zorgt voor de ritmesecties, Andreas bestiert alle andere instrumenten. En jawel, na een paar luisterbeurten, word ik terug naar 1999 geslingerd.
Break The Silence is zo een pure song. Stevige gitaren, synths zuinig in de achtergrond, melodie en solowerk. Stem iets minder gepolijst en wat meer jaren dienst, maar het plaatje klopt nog steeds. Dit is de gothic rock die nog te weinig gemaakt wordt.
Een ballad als Gone doet je kippenvel krijgen. Als dan de gitaren daar een snuif melancholische pijnscheuten aan toevoegen is het helemaal een diepzwart feestje. Vrolijkheid is ver zoek. … and everything is gone… schreeuwt het leed uit. Sea Of Lost Souls is ook een ballade met een ietwat meer indie-sound.
Is It Real or just illusions in my head, is it real, did I lose control instead… Wel, ik ben ze aan het verliezen bij elke luisterbeurt. Omdat elke keer opnieuw nieuwe lagen uit de muziek me raken. Zoals live elke klank als een naald je lijf binnen drong. Is It Real? Yes it is!

Schurende gitaren in de frontlinie bij Belong Here. Lead en rhythm-gitaren in een zalige choreografie. Rond en met elkaar voortschrijdend. De één in de lead, de ander die gedwee volgt. Kronkelend. Vrouwelijke vocalen die het wat verteerbaarder maken. Hoewel.
En hoewel Stand Your Ground de naam is van deze EP, is het nr 7 op de EP. Langzaam ontvouwt zich vanuit een eerder ingetogen intro van een dikke 3 minuten een stevige rocker. Een strakke lead. Die naar het einde toe van deze (jawel!) 9 minuten durende song echt heel zwaar in het rond beukt.

Dankjewel Morbid Poetry. Om me te ontroeren. Om me nog eens in te pakken. Om de wereld gothic rock van een ongelooflijk niveau te schenken. And The Dance Goes on.. Is het niet?
