Not everyone could understand why a sequel from 300 by Zack Snyder has been announced. Wasn’t it so that Spartan leader Leonidas and his 300 men lost the fight against Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro)? Yes, indeed. But Hollywood would not be Hollywood if there wasn’t a solution. Which one? Well, an equel. A brand new term that’s been invented by some smart producers for a movie that is set at the same time as the original. Clever, not?

When the Greek admiral Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) is aware that Leonidas (Gerad Butler) has lost the battle of Thermopylae, he sees no reason to draw back. The Persian Empire has to be defeated by any means. The only way to achieve this is getting an alliance with the Spartans. Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey) is mourning about her dead husband and isn’t keen to go to the front. But there’s no time. Xerxes has the assistance from the gorgeous, but deadly Artemesia (Eva Green). With her the Greeks fight the battle of Salamis: a war at sea that takes place during the same days in 480 BC as the battle from Thermopylae. Talking about a real equel!

Students who are not smart at history better know that the makers didn’t follow the exact historical route. These wars actually took place, but the adventures are based upon the comic from Frank Miller who was also the inspiration for the first one in 2006. That’s exactly the way to enjoy 300: Rise of an Empire: considering it as a comic. The graphic techniques from the first 300 were groundbreaking. A trend that’s been continued in this sequel (hmm, equel!). This time the makers added the 3D-effect. So if you put on the additional glasses, you’ll see lots of cut limbs coming at you!

The story is a bit of a thin one and the acting average, even if Eva Green is absolutely gorgeous and magnificent as cruel bitch. To be honest, I never thought that in the old Greece women looked like gorgeous goth babes (including the nylons!), but that’s another thing! 300: Rise of an Empire is not a grey page in a dull history book, but a perfect way to show what men can do these days with CG-effects.

There is a lot of bonus material on this edition. Behind the Scenes: The 300 Effect has four parts: "Three Days in Hell" (in where Zack Snyder explains why a new 300 has been made), "Brutal Artistry" (about the design and costumes),"A New Breed of Hero" (the search of a new hero, simply because Leonidas was dead) and finally "Taking the Battle to Sea" (or the story how a film that is set at sea without actual water!)

In "Real Leaders and Legends" historians tell you the real (and less spectacular) story. "Women Warriors" is a deserved ode to both Eva Green and Lena Headey. "Savage Warships" is another scientific part in where experts explain how the Greek battleships were build like. Finally there is "Becoming a Warrior" in where we see in how little time an actor can become a true fighter.

Heel wat wenkbrauwen gingen de hoogte in toen werd aangekondigd dat het aktiespektakel 300 van Zack Snyder een vervolg zou krijgen. De Spartaan Leonidas was toch samen met zijn 300 trawanten door Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) tot de laatste man verslagen? Inderdaad, maar Hollywood zou Hollywood niet zijn, mocht men hiervoor geen oplossing hebben gevonden. Het werd geen prequel, maar wel een equel. Wellicht gaan die wenkbrauwen opnieuw rare toeren maken, maar een equel is volgens de producers gewoon een term voor een film die zich tegelijkertijd met het origineel afspeelt.

Wanneer de Griekse admiraal Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) verneemt dat Leonidas (Gerad Butler) de slag om Thermopylae heeft verloren, is dat volgens hem geen reden om terug te trekken. Het Perzische rijk moet ten allen tijden worden tegengehouden. De enige manier om de Perzen te verslaan is dat de Grieken een alliantie met de Spartanen aangaan. Helaas, heeft koningin Gorgo (Lena Headey) door haar groot verdriet daar maar weinig zin in. Veel tijd om na te denken heeft Gorgo echter niet. Xerxes heeft namelijk de hulp van de bloedmooie, maar aartsgevaarlijke Artemesia (Eva Green). Met haar wordt de slag bij Salamis gestreden: een oorlog op zee die zich tijdens dezelfde dagen in 480 voor Christus als de slag om Thermopylae afspeelde. Een echte equel dus!

Studenten die met een herexamen geschiedenis zitten opgezadeld doen er best aan om rekening te houden met het feit dat de makers een serieus loopje met de geschiedkundige feiten nemen. Deze oorlogen hebben wel plaats gegrepen, maar alles is gebaseerd op de comic van Frank Miller die ook al de inspiratie voor de eersteling uit 2006 leverde. Het is dan ook zo dat je 300: Rise of an Empire moet bekijken: als een stripverhaal. De grafische technieken van de eerste 300 waren baanbrekend en deze trend wordt in de sequel (of neen sorry, equel!) knap verder gezet. Wel hebben de makers er deze keer het 3D-effect bijgelapt. Wie het brilletje opzet zal dus vooral veel ledematen naar zich zien toevliegen.

Het verhaaltje is flinterdun en de acteerprestaties gewoontjes, alhoewel Eva Green als wrede bitch ideaal is gecast. Ik had eerlijk gezegd nooit gedacht dat vrouwen omstreeks 480 voor Christus er als onweerstaanbare goth babes (inclusief de netkousen!) uitzagen, maar wie maalt daar nu om? 300: Rise of an Empire is geen saaie weergave uit een grijs geschiedenisboek, wel een subliem staaltje van wat je tegenwoordig allemaal met CG-effecten kan bereiken.

Er staan een heleboel extra’s op deze uitgave. Behind the Scenes: The 300 Effect bestaat uit "Three Days in Hell" (o.a. Zack Snyder legt uit waarom er een vervolg kwam op 300), "Brutal Artistry" (over de designproductie en de kostuums), "A New Breed of Hero" (over het zoeken naar een opvolger van Gerard Butler die in de eerste 300 Leonidas vertolkte) en ten slotte "Taking the Battle to Sea" (of hoe een film die zich op zee afspeelt tot stand komt zonder dat de acteurs ook maar één druppel water hebben gezien).

Verder vind je hier ook nog "Real Leaders and Legends" waarin geschiedkundigen de ware (en minder spectaculaire) feiten uit de doeken doen. "Women Warriors" is gewoon een (verdiende) ode aan zowel Eva Green als Lena Headey. "Savage Warships" gaat dan weer de wetenschappelijke toer op, want daarin wordt uitgelegd hoe de ingenieuze Griekse slagschepen werden gebouwd. Ten slotte is er nog "Becoming a Warrior" waarin we zien hoe in een mum van tijd een acteur een volwaardige vechter wordt.
