It will be quite difficult to find one venue in Brussels that looks more underground than the Recyclart, it is very dark and the interior makes you think of the 80s. An ideal place to see one of the most legendary bands from that period: Psychic TV.

First, Aikula played. You never heard of this band before, you say? Mind you, neither did we! The debut album Jate did well in homeland Slovenia and Psychic TV gave these five musicians the unique opportunity to show the rest of Europe what they are capable of. Eastern European rock acts are usually difficult for Western music fans, but because of the brilliant guitar work of Jan Pivk and Jernej Kobal, plus the strong vocals by Zoran Zelenović, you quickly noticed that the audience had no problems to enjoy this sturdy stoner rock. It was clear that this would be a night with a lot of sweat: the venue was packed.

I guess most need not be explained what Psychic TV is: founded in 1981 by Genesis P-Orridge (former Throbbing Gristle) and Alexander Fergusson (formerly Alternative TV) and primarily a visual project (hence the name). After the release of a whole series of live albums, Fergusson was replaced by Fred Giannelli. The next four years were almost pure techno. Afterwards, Genesis P-Orridge was mainly involved in very experimental records that landed in the record collection by dedicated fans who wanted to hear everything he/she did. In 2003, drummer Edley O'Dowd convinced Genesis to start again after a period of silence. Despite a lot of tragedies (including the death of Lady Jaye), Psychic TV was stronger than ever before, although the new style was a far cry from the early industrial sounds. Psychic TV was almost pure krautrock now, but how!

Right from the start Psychic TV set the tone: a very hard psychedelic version of Jump Into the Fire, a cover of Harry Nilsson of his classic Nilsson Schmilsson from 1971. Everything was perfect: the intriguing bass of Alice Genese, the energetic guitar byJeff Berner, the tight drums of O 'Dowd and of course the voice of Genesis, which evokes all kind of emotions. We already wrote it: perfect!

Then the band opted for a classic: Just Like Arcadia from Allegory And Self, the 1988-album in which Monte Cazazza was involved. The venue exploded, beer cups went up in the air, slam dancing as if life depended on it. After How Does It Feel and Looking For You, the sublime Alienist was played, in which we recognized the old Psychic TV: psychedelia with a dash of electronica. From the Snakes album of 2014, three tracks were played: After You're Dead, She Said, Burning The Old Home and Southern Comfort. The band clearly suffered from the almost unbearable heat in the venue, but the 66-year-old Genesis gave everyting she (or he) had to offer and performed a superb set of which brats can learn a lot. One minor point was the "fan" who started to smoke in the venue, although Genesis asked him several times not to do so because of her asthma. A big middle finger to that “fan”, have respect for the artists, man!

When Genesis left the stage, she could not resist to make a statement and give the Queen a slap. Horse racing in Liverpool is sponsored with taxpayers' money, and because horses are required to jump over impossible barrages, many die each year.

Psychic TV came back despite the heat (and the smoker) and played an excellent version of Suspicious. An evening to remember. Magic!

Meer underground kan de Brusselse Recyclart niet zijn, het is er ontzettend donker en het interieur doet je meteen aan de jaren 80 denken. Een ideale plek om één van de meest legendarische bands uit die periode aan het werk te zien: Psychic TV.

Eerst kwam Aikula aan de beurt. Nog nooit van gehoord, zeg je? Wel, ook wij hadden tot gisteren geen idee wie deze band was. De debuutplaat Jate deed het in thuisland Slovenië bijzonder goed en dankzij Psychic TV kregen deze vijf muzikanten de unieke gelegenheid om via een toer de rest van Europa te tonen waartoe ze in staat zijn. Oost-Europese rockacts hebben het meestal moeilijk om Westerse muziekfans te overtuigen, maar dankzij het schitterende gitaarwerk van Jan Pivk en Jernej Kobal, aangevuld met de gebalde vocalen van Zoran Zelenović, had het publiek geen moeite om te genieten van deze stevige stonerrock. Meteen was het duidelijk dat dit een avondje met het nodige zweet zou worden: de Recyclart zat bomvol.

Wie zich een beetje muziekfan waant, moet geen uitleg meer hebben over Psychic TV: deze in 1981 opgerichte band van Genesis P-Orridge (ex-Throbbing Gristle) en Alexander Fergusson (ex-Alternative TV) was in de eerste plaats een visueel project (vandaar ook de naam). Na het uitbrengen van een hele resem liveplaten, verdween Fergusson en werd hij vervangen door Fred Giannelli. De vier volgende jaren waren dan ook bijna pure techno. Nadien was Genesis P-Orridge vooral betrokken bij zeer experimentele platen die enkel in de platenkasten van verfente fans belandden. Het was in 2003 dat drummer Edley O’Dowd Genesis ervan kon overtuigen om opnieuw te beginnen. Ondanks een heleboel tragedies (waaronder de dood van Lady Jaye), was Psychic TV vanaf toen sterker dan ooit, ofschoon de nieuwe stijl mijlenver van de oorspronkelijke industrial-geluiden lag. Psychic TV was voortaan bijna pure krautrock, maar hoe!

Van enige opbouw was geen sprake, meteen vanaf het begin zette Psychic TV de toon: een loeiharde psychedelica-versie van Jump Into the Fire, een cover van Harry Nilsson uit zijn klassieker Nilsson Schmilsson uit 1971. Alles was perfect: het intrigerende basgeluid van Alice Genese, het energieke gitaargeluid van Jeff Berner, de strakke drums van O’ Dowd en natuurlijk die stem van Genesis, die allerlei emoties in je losmaken. We schreven het reeds: perfect!

Als tweede song koos de band voor een klassieker: Just Like Arcadia uit Allegory And Self, het album uit 1988 waarbij ook Monte Cazazza betrokken was. De zaal ontplofte, bierbekertjes gingen de lucht in, overal werd er geduwd en gedanst alsof het leven ervan afhing.

Na How Does It Feel en Looking For You, volgde het sublieme Alienist, waarin we duidelijk de oude Psychic TV herkenden: psychedelica met een flinke scheut elektronica. Uit Snakes, het album uit 2014, werden drie tracks gebracht: After You're Dead, She Said, Burning The Old Home en Southern Comfort. De band had duidelijk last van de bijna ondraaglijke hitte, maar de 66-jarige Genesis liet het niet aan zijn (of haar) hart komen. Psychic TV gaf alles wat het te bieden had en speelde een sublieme set waaruit snotneuzen heel wat kunnen leren. Een minpuntje van het sublieme concert was de “fan” die het nodig vond om te roken in de zaal en dat terwijl Genesis meerdere malen verzocht om dit niet te doen wegens haar astma. Een welgemeende middelvinger, heb respect voor de artiesten, man!

Toen Genesis het podium verliet, kon ze het niet laten om een statement te maken en de Britse koningin een veeg uit de pan te geven. Met belastingsgeld worden paardenraces in Liverpool gesponsord, en omdat de paarden er worden verplicht om over onmogelijke hoogtes te springen, sterven er jaarlijks een heleboel. Neen, tussen Genesis en de koningin zal het nooit klikken, terecht!

Psychic TV kwam, ondanks de warmte (en die ene degoutante roker) opnieuw op het podium en bracht o.a. een uitmuntende versie van Suspicious. Een avond, maar vooral een band om nooit te vergeten. Magisch!
