What would be the result if you could put Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Pop Group and James Brown in a recording studio in London for a few weeks? Of course: Pure Beauty! Coincidentally, that's the name of this formation, which was founded two years ago by the punk rockers of Fair Ohs and their cronies of the punk band Domestic Blitz. Their music? Between funk, post-punk and jazz, with squealing guitars, loud saxophones and boisterous percussion. Maybe not exactly what you hope to hear in 2015, but very danceable and somewhat eccentric: Chicago meets the funk of James Brown, with Weather Report and Mahavishnu in the orchestra pit!

Pure Beauty sounds very American, and that is obviously a little strange for musicians who all live and work in London. This cooperation is therefore more of a special project in which these musicians can express different and unexpected interests. In Back Slashing they start rather violently, but don’t expect James Brown behind the microphone, because the singer sounds less dark, more like Chicago, with lots of guitars, swirling saxophones and metallic percussion: a generous portion of funk with a touch of jazz. The jazzy instrumental Tucano floats on a solid pace, with a wailing solo guitar and a striking bass guitar, backed by dark saxophone sounds and tin-like percussion. Time for a real James Brown-like approach in Panama Hands, in which the rock vocals contrast nicely with the funky accompaniment, while the repetitive saxophone in the intro of Magic City drowns us in a good-sounding jazz funk composition.

If the combination of funk and jazz looks interesting, then you should definitely listen to this EP.

Wat zou het resultaat zijn mocht je Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Pop Group en James Brown samen in een opnamestudio in Londen opsluiten voor een paar weken? Uiteraard: Pure Beauty! Toevallig is dat de naam van deze formatie die twee jaar geleden werd opgericht met de punkrockers van Fair Ohs en hun kornuiten van de punkband Domestic Blitz. Hun muziekstijl? Iets wat het midden houdt tussen funk, post-punk en jazz, met jankende gitaren, schreeuwerige saxofoons en onstuimige percussie. Nee, wellicht niet bepaald wat u anno 2015 uit uw luidspeakers hoopt te persen, maar wel heel erg dansbaar en prettig gestoord: Chicago meets de funk van James Brown, met Weather Report en Mahavishnu in de orkestbak!

Pure Beauty klinkt heel erg Amerikaans, en dat is uiteraard een beetje vreemd voor muzikanten die allemaal in Londen wonen en werken. Maar deze samenwerking is dan ook eerder een gelegenheidsproject waarin de heren andere interesses kwijt kunnen dan men van ze gewend is. In Back Slashing steken ze meteen vrij heftig van wal en je verwacht meteen James Brown voor de microfoon, maar de zanger klinkt minder donker, eerder als Chicago, met flink wat gitaargeluid, dwarrelende saxofoons en metaalachtig slagwerk: een flinke portie funk met een snuifje jazz. De jazzy instrumental Tucano dobbert op een stevig tempo, met een jankende sologitaar, een basgitaar onderaan, gesteund door donker saxofoongeluid en ketelachtig slagwerk. Tijd voor een James Brown-achtige aanpak in Panama Hands, waarin de rockvocalen prachtig contrasteren met de funky begeleiding, terwijl de repetitieve saxofoon in het intro van Magic City ons meteen op het spoor zet van een goed klinkende jazzfunkcompositie.

Als de combinatie van funk en jazz uw ding is, moet u zeker een keertje luisteren.
