The Completist is the debut album of Screaming Parent, the solo project of Dudley Colley. He is the founder of the Irish band The Dudley Corporation, and while the band took a period of rest in preparation of its fifth album, Colley has recorded ten of his own songs (10 bedroom classics, according to the press release). The reviews in the British press were mostly excellent and that’s enough to make us curious.

The album begins with The Completist, the only up-tempo song in this selection, with emphatic drums, dark and buzzing electronics and a distorted voice, evolving later to a whining choir: a good sounding pop song with pit. The Stand Off floats quietly away on a bed of synths and acoustic guitar, and again there is the choir of low and high voices that adds color to the track: a simple and uncomplicated song in which Dudley Colley shows that good music is not necessarily difficult. The Enemies In gets melodious electronics and a smooth pace over which is spread out a plurality of voices. It is a beautiful pop song, while The Gates of Hell mainly thrives on high voices and repetitive electro loops with afterwards an electric guitar sound.

In The Season, echoing voices hover above the sound of an acoustic guitar and small electronic noises, a dreamy and atmospheric track for a warm summer evening. The Alien Thing floats initially on a voice loop, metallic percussion, good sounding electronics and an acoustic guitar. The vocals sound warm and uninhibited and the same goes for The Damn, which begins with careful noise, the sound of dark drones and rumbling percussion, and that, just like The Design of Awful Things (I'm Through with Numbers), is not dangerous and never leaves the path of euphony. The Design is adorned with short violin sounds and tin-like percussion. In The Questions at the End of It, the low and high voices from The Completist can be heard again. The vocals lean against the sound of Freddy Mercury and Queen, but compositionally there is no comparison, because croaking electronics and an arsenal of percussion sounds dominate the track, that ends with thunder and lightning. The Descent connects seamlessly with similar vocals, whimpering and repetitive guitars and thumping drums.

The Completist is a very musical and accessible album with the versatile voice of Dudley Colley as most notable ingredient. If an album may sound a little more commercial than usual, then this one is definitely a good choice. A summer album!

The Completist is het debuutalbum van Screaming Parent, het soloproject van Dudley Colley. Hij is de bezieler van de Ierse band The Dudley Corporation, en van de ingelaste rustpauze ter voorbereiding van het vijfde album van de band, maakte Colley gebruik om wat in de perstekst 10 slaapkamerklassiekers genoemd wordt, op te nemen. De kritieken in de Engelse pers waren overwegend uitstekend en dat is genoeg om ons nieuwsgierig te maken.

Het album begint met The Completist en dat is meteen de enige uptemposong van deze selectie, met nadrukkelijke drums, donkere en zoemende electronics en een vaak verwrongen stem die later evolueert tot een jankend koortje: een goed klinkende popsong met pit. The Stand Off dobbert rustig voort op een bedje van synths en akoestische gitaar en opnieuw is er het koortje van lage en hoge stemmen dat de track van kleur voorziet: een eenvoudige en ongecompliceerde song waarmee Dudley Colley bewijst dat goede muziek niet noodzakelijk ingewikkeld hoef te zijn. The Enemies In krijgt welluidende electronics en een smeuïg tempo waarover opnieuw een veelheid van stemmetjes wordt uitgesmeerd om uit te groeien tot een prachtige popsong, terwijl The Gates of Hell vooral teert op hoge stemmetjes en repetitieve elektroloops met naderhand elektrisch gitaargeluid.

In The Season drijven de echoënde stemmen op het geluid van een akoestische gitaar en kleine elektrogeluidjes, een dromerige en atmosferische track voor een warme zomeravond. The Alien Thing dobbert op een aparte stemloop, metaalachtige percussie, goed klinkende electronics en het geluid van een akoestische gitaar. De vocalen klinken warm en onbevangen en dat geldt ook voor The Damn, dat begint met voorzichtige noise, het geluid van donkere drones en roffelende percussie, maar dat net zoals The Design of Awful Things (I’m Through with Numbers) nooit gevaarlijk wordt of het pad van de welluidendheid verlaat. The Design wordt versierd met korte geluidjes als van een viool en blikachtige percussie. In The Questions at the End of It keren de lage en hoge stemmetjes uit The Completist terug. De vocalen leunen tegen het geluid van Freddy Mercury en Queen aan, maar compositorisch is er geen enkele overeenkomst, want kwakkende electronics en een arsenaal van percussiegeluiden domineren de track die met donder en bliksem eindigt. The Descent sluit naadloos aan met gelijksoortige vocalen, jankende en repetitieve gitaren en bonkende drums.

The Completist is een zeer muzikaal en toegankelijk album met als opvallendste ingrediënt de veelzijdige stem van Dudley Colley. Als een album een beetje commerciëler mag klinken dan gewoonlijk, dan is dit album beslist een goede keuze. Een zomerplaat!
