With their latest CD Live & Acoustic, Thurisaz showed that they were more than just a prog/metal band, but on their newest one they return to their roots.

The album starts very strong with a quite long intro, build around a guitar riff. In fact, when this instrumental is over, you will in fact have heard two tracks. Patterns of Life is the first “song” with various vocals, that sounds both dark (a sort of grunt) and clean.There is a lot of attention to the melody, and there are lots of variations, so the listener stays fascinated till the end. Rays of Light sounds even a little bit stronger. Everything is at the right place and nothing seems superfluous. Tangram starts with a piano sound: it is nice, sensitive and melodic and the added strings halfway the song make it almost sound like a classic piece of music. Quite different is One Final Step with a dreamy part in the middle, and soon after explodes with a beautiful guitar solo. An impressive epic.

Enslaved Dreams is an intermezzo, performed on a twelve string guitar: very atmospheric and ideal to be prepared for In All Rememberance, a song that goes in all directions. Stargazer begins with the sound of rain and a piano, a quite melancholic track, that fits perfectly at the end of an excellent record. For lovers of prog metal like Opeth and Amorphis, this is a must have!

Met hun vorige akoestische cd Live & Acoustic toonde Thurisaz aan dat het diverse muzikale terreinen aankan, met hun nieuweling gaat de band weer de prog/metalrichting uit. Ze beginnen sterk met een uitgesponnen intro die om een gitaarriff is gebouwd en eigenlijk de eerste 2 nummers omvat. Bijna volledig instrumentaal. Patterns of life is de eerste echte song met tekst en zang, die wordt afgewisseld met een diepe (richting grunt) en een cleane stem, maar met veel aandacht voor zowel de melodie als voor afwisseling, die er voor zorgen dat de song blijft boeien. Rays Of Light is misschien nog iets sterker. Er staat niets teveel op en allemaal netjes op zijn plaats.

Tangram begint met een pianolijn. Mooi, gevoelig en melodieus. Met de strijkers lijkt het bijna een klassiek muziekstukje. Een hemelsbreed verschil met One Final Step waarin er halfweg wel een rustige, dromerige passage zit, die met een gitaarsolo weer op gang komt. Een mooi episch werkstuk. Enslaved Dreams is een intermezzo met een 12-snarige gitaar. Heel sfeervol en het klinkt een beetje alsde intro voor het volgend nummer, In All Rememberance. Opnieuw een nummer dat alle richtingen uit gaat, van rustig naar wild, van traag naar snel. Heel geslaagd.

Stargaze begint met het geluid van regen en een piano, gevolgd door een heerlijke zanglijn: een heel melancholisch nummer en een mooie afsluiter voor deze topplaat. Liefhebbers van prog-metal (denk aan Opeth of Amorphis) moeten dit in huis halen.
