Autumn is a trio consisting of Julie Plante (vocals), Jeff Leyda (bass) and Neil Mckay (guitars), based in the American city of Minneapolis and originated in 1994. After some years of silence, the band-members met up in 2016 and started composing music again, resulting in this Maxi ‘The Fall’ which is released on the still young and fresh label Sett Records.
Style-wise The Fall balances on the thin line between post-punk, gothic rock and ethereal music. The vocal work of Julie being mostly responsible for that. Shoe-gaze guitars provide the first tunes, while reverb and chorus effects dominate this song. Fans of The Cure and Cocteau Twins, but also The Sisters Of Mercy lovers will be able to appreciate this music. A fantastic song that makes one want to wander endlessly around on an obscure smoke-clad floor in a medieval cellar.
The second song on this Maxi is also of high quality. Before and After is made up with the same ingredients as the title song. Perfect blended of vocals, guitars and bass supported by rather modest drumming. Old-school gothic rock of the better kind!
As a bonus, we get a remix of The Fall (Broken RMX) by William Faith, who is in fact the man who produced this gem. The song got a slight future-pop treatment coming with the obligatory electronic fiddling, however without doing much harm to the original song and it’s recognizability. A very danceable version and it’s almost amazing to see how this totally different arrangement works just as well too.
After hearing this we can say, Autumn is back and it can only be a matter of time until a new full-CD is released! And if those songs are of the same quality as this maxi-single, then we can’t wait! So the sooner, the better!
