 “Dario Argento can turn murder into art". These are not our words, but those from Daria Nicolodi, the scream queen who plays the leading role in Tenebrae, or Shadows like the movie is known in Holland. Even if some horrorspecialists think that the honour belongs to Mario Bava, it's Dario Argento himself who says he’s the inventor of the Giallo. That is a term that is used for an Italian horrormovie that is characterized by both weird close-ups (for instance black leathergloves) or its typical baroque-style. From his 1970-debut The Bird With The Crystal Plumage on, Argento changed the world of horror. Even “serious” movie buffs who normally shiver when they hear the term horror, have lifted up Argento’s works to pure art. Justified, as Argento could mix like no one else surrealistic images with kitsch. Blood was never so red as in his Giallo-classics.

After having made some "historical" pictures, Argento went back in 1982 to the genre that made him famous. Tenebrae is perhaps not the ultimate masterpiece Suspiria is, but it's definitely one of his best.

Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa) is an American author who's coming to Rome to present his newest thriller Tenebrae. Immediately after arriving, a woman got murdered with a razor blade and is forced to eat the pages of his latest novel. Later on more people are killed by the razor killer. The police demand the help from the author to catch the murderer.

The story itself isn't that important, you can even say there's a lack of tension in it. Tenebrae is more a visual fest. In every shot you can see the touch of the genius. The blood has become his paint, and because colours are so important in his movies, it's a godsend to watch this classic in a restored (and such a perfect!) version on Blu-ray. Also the thrilling soundtrack that is composed by Goblin is genius. The electronic score that lies between Giorgio Moroder and John Carpenter gives the picture an extra, somewhat bizarre touch.

Tenebrae is released on Arrow. Just like always, this Blu-ray is out with a large section of bonuses that is a real tip for everyone who wants to know something about the strange Giallo-world as it's all explained by the Italian maestro himself. Tenebrae is absolutely recommended. Something to (re)discover, and even if this film is already in your collection, you better buy it again as this Blu-ray is absolutely gorgeous.

“Dario Argento is iemand die van moord kunst maakt.” Het zijn niet onze woorden, wel die van screamqueen Daria Nicolodi, de hoofdrolspeelster uit Tenebrae (of gewoon Shadows zoals hij in bijv. Nederland werd uitgebracht). Alhoewel sommige horrorspecialisten de eer liever aan Mario Bava geven, beschouwt Argento zichzelf als de uitvinder van de Giallo. Dat is een Italiaanse horrorfilm met enkele typische kenmerken: het gebruik van vreemde close-ups zoals bijv. een lederen zwarten handschoen of de typische barokke stijl. Vanaf zijn debuut The Bird With The Crystal Plumage uit 1970 veranderde Argento het gezicht van de horrorwereld. Filmkenners die begonnen te huiveren als ze het woord horror hoorden, hemelden zonder omzien de films van Argento (terecht) als ware kunst op. De Italiaanse cineast wist inderdaad als geen ander hoe je kitsch met surrealistische beelden moest mengen, en waarschijnlijk oogt bloed nergens roder dan in Argento-prenten.


Na een paar “historische” prenten te hebben gedraaid, keerde Argento in 1982 naar het genre terug dat hem groot had gemaakt. Tenebrae is misschien wel niet de evenknie van het meesterwerk Suspiria, toch behoort deze bibberprent eveneens tot één van zijn allerbeste.


Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa) is een gevierde Amerikaanse schrijver die naar Rome afzakt om zijn nieuwste thriller Tenebrae te promoten. Onmiddellijk bij zijn aankomst wordt een vrouw met een scheermes omgebracht en wordt ze tijdens haar doodstrijd gedwongen om de Tenebrae-roman op te eten. Het blijft niet bij dat ene slachtoffer, de politie schakelt de hulp van Neal in om de dader te pakken.


Het verhaal is eigenlijk van ondergeschikt belang. De film is zelfs niet eens echt spannend, wel is Tenebrae (zoals de meeste Argento-films overigens) een visueel festijn van een grootmeester die zijn talent tot in de puntjes beheerst. Dat komt door deze prachtig gerestaureerde Blu-ray nog meer tot uiting. Het bloed is dik en bijna de verf waarmee Argento zijn kunstwerk maakt. Ook de muziek speelt daarin een zeer grote rol. De elektronische score van Goblin die ergens tussen Giorgio Moroder en John Carpenter zweeft, draagt bij tot het bizarre, akelige sfeertje van de horrorprent.


Tenebrae is uitgebracht door het Britse Arrow. Zoals we ondertussen van het label al een tijdje gewend zijn zitten er in deze uitvoering tal van schitterende bonussen die een nieuw licht werpen op de wereld van de Giallo. Een must voor iedere horrorfreak. Sorry, een hebbeding voor iedere filmfan, want Argento is grootse filmkunst waarvan Tenebrae een van de beste voorbeelden is.
