Despite the overall “glory” of “the 80s band”, The Godfathers have not that much in common with archetypical 80’s artists. They haven’t released new compilation every few years (and I hope they wouldn’t), they don’t tour “the old hits”. Since The Godfather reunited in 2008, the band has been following one simple modus: to release a good record every few years. So far, the tradition hasn’t changed. As one of the highlights of 2022, “Alpha Beta Gamma Delta” clearly proves that.
Coming from both post-punk and new-wave eras, The Godfathers managed to blend a variety of styles, finding their identity. Both initially and later on, with every next release. Starting with the self-titled opener, the band almost put you in a race-car driving through various landscapes accompanied by their uncompromising rock-n-roll sensibility. For a number of reasons, the band doesn’t bring the full-on-volume power of their chords down on your head. It creates an intrigue. It makes you question yourself. While slowly, they incorporate bits and pieces of their natural punk-ness into the songwriting. Whether it’s romantic “You Gotta Wait” or “Midnight Rider”. Unlike some of their colleagues, The Godfathers keep the full control on their power and expression without showing you their cards fully. All the elements and changes on “ALPHA BETA GAMMA DELTA” happen organically – probably the best thing about the new LP. Alongside, as always, prolific songwriting.
