BODY SYSTEM — World Of Lies

The origins of Body System go back some 35 years. Dissatisfied with earlier experiences, the project was conceived as a crossroads between Sheffield and Detroit techno and German and Belgian body music. But the seed didn’t sprout back then. More than three decades later, that original concept has been revived. After being invited to contribute the track In Your Mind to the soundtrack of Electronic Body Movie, directed by Pietro Anton, the project was given a new outfit and finally took shape — firmly rooted in the original vision.

World Of Lies is an anthology of what past and present electronic music can be. Impossible to confine to a single box.

The EP kicks off with heavy, stomping force through an old-school EBM banger: In Your Mind. You can catch echoes of Nitzer Ebb in there, but just as easily other old-school names. No further explanation needed. Turn up the volume and im Rhythmus bleiben. Your more fragile bone structure might feel it for a moment, but this song is absolutely worth it. As a bonus, the EP closes with the VeGo remix of this track. Fun? Bwaaaa… Necessary? No — because it strips away much of the raw power that makes the original so strong.

If you’re already sweating, you might as well add another track. Just Dare pulls on its EBM trousers as well. Slightly less old-school than its predecessor, but the BPM count is certainly high enough.

No Solution shifts down a gear. Although… it’s still danceable electro, with an EBM bassline that’s kept a bit more restrained. The guys are drawing from the same barrel, but the fermentation is different. Insane continues in that direction. It leans a bit more toward synthpop or futurepop — which is absolutely no problem, as the song remains engaging throughout.

Then the robust character is allowed to punch forward again. A stomper without pushing you into the red. The vocals sound slightly more restrained and melodic here.

Yes, it took 35 years to mature. The best wines sometimes need that. A single malt can also withstand those years. And when you take a sip of this, the flavor is bound to win you over. Oraculo Records has taken Body System under its wing. The label has once again secured a golden catch.
