PISTON DAMP — Downfall

Piston Damp is a Danish–Norwegian electronic duo formed by Jonas Groth and Truls Sønsterud. Jonas is also known for his long-standing involvement with Apoptygma Berzerk, fronted by his brother Stephan. This connection places Piston Damp firmly within the Scandinavian electronic tradition while allowing the project to maintain its own distinct musical identity.

Their latest album, Mastermind Vol. 1: No Points For Trying, presents a measured and carefully structured body of work, rooted in synthpop and EBM while favouring atmosphere and melodic clarity over excess. The album’s controlled pacing and restrained production underline the duo’s focus on cohesion and balance rather than overt dramatic gestures.

The new single Downfall serves as the album’s closing release and offers several distinct elements:

Downfall (Single Version)

Mixed by Willi Dammeier, the single version introduces added harmony vocals and newly recorded drums by Ted Skogmann, giving the track a more direct and rhythm-driven presentation while retaining its underlying tension.

Downfall (Elegant Machinery Remix)

The remix by Swedish electronic artist Robert Enforsen of Elegant Machinery reinterprets the track through a more minimal synth framework, emphasizing precision and classic Scandinavian electronic aesthetics.

Now You Know (Realization Version)

Originally featured on Mastermind Vol. 1, Now You Know appears here in a stripped-down realization for piano and vocals only. Removed from its electronic setting, the song takes on a more intimate and reflective character.

Downfall (Album Version)

The album version of Downfall provides the reference point for the single, reflecting the broader sonic language of Mastermind Vol. 1 with its emphasis on atmosphere, restraint, and structure.

Downfall is available now on all major digital platforms and stands as a concise and confident release in its own right. The single is highly recommended as a strong entry point into Piston Damp’s work.
