“The path I cross is dark but illuminates my soul. Not on the left, not on the right, not above, not below, not in the middle. There's no place to go. ”
The shrouded streets of Northern Limburg in the late 1970s—a time and place where a collective would rise, wearing its history like a scar and throbbing with restless invention. Their name: Struggler. Born amidst the bleak industrial haze of Hamont, the band was at the vanguard of Belgian afterpunk, standing shoulder to shoulder with the likes of De Brassers, Red Zebra, and Siglo XX, carrying a defiant sound onto international stages.
Over the years, Struggler etched their mark with a distinguished body of seminal releases: It Was A Very Long Conversation But At The End We Didn't Shake Hands (1982), Life Update+ (1999), The Gap (2017), and Wilma Determined Protector (2020). Their singles—Wanted (1980), Night Fever (1980), and Recrudesce (1984)—document a band constantly probing the edges of sound and sentiment, leaving an indelible imprint on the underground music landscape.
Decades on, Struggler refuses nostalgia’s sway. Their music remains a mirror of darkness and beauty, a place where haunting synths, jagged guitars, and urgent rhythms coalesce into a sound both timeless and alive. They are at once heirs to their gritty past and explorers of the now—immersed in the weight of history, yet unafraid to bend it into something new. Every note carries the fire of passion, the gravity of reflection, and the subtle poetry of lives lived at the margins.
Struggler’s story is one of persistence, transformation, and a refusal to compromise. They are not just a band; they are a living testament to the enduring power of underground music—a fierce, poetic heartbeat in a world often dulled by certainty.
Time moves. Scenes dissolve. Certainties erode. Yet Struggler remains. On January 20, 2026, Struggler unveiled Zugzwang, their latest offering to the void—a title that dictates the unavoidable, a state in which every move carries consequence and stillness is no longer an option. A manifestation that places the band in a position where every step alters the board. Rather than looking back, it feels like a deliberate confrontation with the present—measured, inevitable, and charged with a slow-burning inevitability.
After the enforced stillness of the pandemic, the band found new ways to move. With their own space carved from isolation, every note of Zugzwang took shape, self-recorded, mixed, and produced, a testament to Struggler’s relentless autonomy. Its first live incarnation will be unleashed on February 21 at the Pelter Skelter event, alongside Arbeid Adelt and Rehash Neu Klang—a return to the stage that had long been denied.
Born within walls carved by their own hands—painstakingly crafted, meticulously honed—it became the engine room of their new compositions. What might have seemed a practical measure transformed into something elemental: control, autonomy, and the freedom to sculpt sound without restraint.
From that self-made sanctuary emerged seven new compositions, tightened and honed with mechanical precision, yet driven by something deeply human. What began as isolated creation now transforms into collective force, as the band reshapes these songs for the stage—where discipline gives way to impact, and tension finds its release in movement.
In a world filled with nocturnal whispers, where Dead Flowers decay beneath indifferent skies; where fate lingers and inevitability presses upon every choice—the greatest struggle will be resisting this album. Enfold yourself in the absence of light, turn away from all else, and let it roar, so loud that Zugzwang rattles the walls of your mind.
The album is available on vinyl and CD, and comes in a special package including an exclusive bag.
