Denner are a new coldwave band from the US with French roots who released last year their debut "Nouvelle Bretagne" that was recorded at Le Laboratoire Central, Brussels, by Gabriel Séverin.
The title song is an homage to NYC & North America, a part of which used to be called "Nouvelle-Bretagne" (New Brittany) mid-19th century. The singer of Denner, Gilles, is from Bretagne (France) and used to live in NYC for 7 years. The song is a poetic evocation of the city, thinking about identity and being an immigrant.
The video is thus based on 1921's film "Manhatta", a collaboration between painter Charles Sheeler & photographer Paul Strand.
Subtitled "a study of the modern Babylon-on-the-Hudson", it is know as the first American experimental movie. It was shot in New York in 1920, inspired by a poem titled "Mannahatta", written by Walt Whitman.
The original movie is silent, you can watch the result here.
