On Saturday, May 30th the Ceremony Festival will be held at the Magasin 4 in Brussels. Let us present you the bands that will be performing. Today: Modern English.
Modern English released its debut 'Mesh & Lace' on the legendary 4AD label - the label of Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, Clan of Xymox, Bauhaus and many other historical bands - in 1981. 'Mesh & Lace' was a very dark album in the style of Joy Division and The Sound. They would soon follow other paths. With 'After The Snow' (1982) and 'Ricochet Days' (1984), the group hit a more poppy direction, which brought them a lot of success. Modern English had meanwhile moved to New York and broke with 4AD, even though that label had contributed significantly to the band's success. They recorded another LP - 'Stop Start' (1986) - before the band fell apart. Singer Robbie Grey founded a new version of Modern English in 1989, that lasted until 1991, and did so again in 1995, after which it became a semi-permanent collaboration. In 2010, the original line-up with Robbie Grey, Gary McDowell and Michael Conroy reunited, and that's the formation that you will be able to see at work at the Ceremony Festival.
