Told from the perspective of its captain Slava Fetisov, the story portrays his transformation from national hero to political enemy. From the USSR to Russia, the film examines how sport mirrors social and cultural movements and parallels the rise and fall of the Red Army team with the Soviet Union
"Red Army" was de naam van het Sovjet hockeyteam dat er tijdens de Koude Oorlog in slaagde om de grote westerse teams te verslaan. De voorbereiding en opleiding van de atleten verliep zeer Spartaans. Het hoofddoel was kampioenen produceren... en hen tegelijkertijd in bedwang te houden. Alleen Slava Fetisov, hun kapitein en een ware nationale held, durfde zich te verzetten tegen het regime.
