Tragic Visions is the California-based project that blends elements of ebm/industrial in their own unique style. The project has, for the most part remained dormant in recent years. But 2024 is going to prove to be a big one for the project. New material, old material dusted off and brought to life from out of the vaults and whatever else comes their way. Hello Tragic Visions. Thanks for your time today to answer our questions. Could you introduce us to the members and their function in the project?

David Buyense -vocals, synths and programming

Jess Gibbs -percussion synths and vocals

Jason VanHelsdingen- synths

We noticed on your bandcamp that the most recent release listed was actually written in 2006. Why was it just now put out?

David- “Dead" was an album that I had written and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it because it was quite different than what we were doing at the time. What ended up happening is that some of the songs became part of the next album DKAY but the rest were left forgotten until recently when we rediscovered them and decided we needed to release them.

Do you have any plans to release any other old material?

David- yes our first album “Filth Lust Lies” that was released in the early 2000’s is currently unavailable and we plan to release that later this year. We also have a ton of demos that predate our first album that we may do something with. Maybe reconstruct some of the songs.

Is it that the old recordings are remastered and remixed or are you re-recording old songs with newer hardware and software?

David- “Dead” was released in the songs original form and “Filth Lust Lies“ will be also but we will have some extras, complete reworks of some old songs and yes, some remixes from our archives.

What does Tragic Visions have regarding new material?

David- we have a brand new album of new material set to be released this spring. It’s the first collection of new songs TV has done since DKAY which was originally released around 2008. So it will be the first album with new material in 16 years.

How does it differ from the older recordings and in what ways?

David- The new album will have a few tracks with Jess on some of the vocals. I think the new album displays our growth as musicians over the older material. Still some good straight industrial and ebm music on the album but slightly more modern.

What is the origin of the band name?

David- Tragic Visions goes by TV. The TV can be a box of Tragic Visions, a device that profits off of your fears, a dangerous device that can warp the viewer’s minds through media propaganda. That’s always been the basic idea of the name.

Many years down the road, if someone finds a Tragic Visions album in the attic of an old home and something to play it on…. What would you like this person to know about your legacy as a band?

Jess: Well we really put a lot of “us” in our music and live performances. I’d like to think we inspired people to really reach for something different. If you like ‘90s industrial, buy a synth and make industrial music (insert your style here). We always had a blast on stage trying to really make the crowd think or scared or whatever and we never followed the rules. Hopefully we influenced our smaller community at the very least.

With the increasing costs of touring and the studio expenses, being an artist can often be a bit cost-prohibitive. What advice would you give someone despite such challenges?

David- Just do what you love.

Jess- Support your community as much as you can and lift each other up together.

We zagen op jullie bandcamp dat de meest recente release eigenlijk in 2006 geschreven is. Waarom is het nu pas uitgebracht?

David- "Dead” was een album dat ik had geschreven en ik wist niet zeker wat ik ermee wilde doen, omdat het heel anders was dan wat we op dat moment deden. Wat er uiteindelijk gebeurde, is dat sommige nummers deel gingen uitmaken van het volgende album DKAY, maar de rest werd vergeten tot voor kort, toen we ze herontdekten en besloten dat we ze moesten uitbrengen.

Heb je plannen om nog ander oud materiaal uit te brengen?

David- Ja, ons eerste album "Filth Lust Lies" dat in het begin van de jaren 2000 werd uitgebracht, is momenteel niet beschikbaar en we zijn van plan dat later dit jaar uit te brengen. We hebben ook een heleboel demo's die dateren van voor ons eerste album waar we misschien iets mee zullen doen. Misschien een aantal van de liedjes reconstrueren.

Is het zo dat de oude opnames worden geremasterd en geremixt of neem je oude nummers opnieuw op met nieuwere hardware en software?

David- "Dead" werd uitgebracht in de originele vorm van het nummer en "Filth Lust Lies" zal ook zo zijn, maar we zullen wat extra's hebben, complete herwerkingen van enkele oude nummers en ja, enkele remixen uit onze archieven.

Wat heeft Tragic Visions te bieden op het gebied van nieuw materiaal?

David, we hebben een gloednieuw album met nieuw materiaal dat dit voorjaar wordt uitgebracht. Het is de eerste verzameling nieuwe nummers die TV heeft gemaakt sinds DKAY, dat oorspronkelijk rond 2008 werd uitgebracht. Het wordt dus het eerste album met nieuw materiaal in 16 jaar.

Waarin verschilt het van de oudere opnames en op welke manieren?

David- Het nieuwe album zal een paar nummers bevatten met Jess op zang. Ik denk dat het nieuwe album onze groei als muzikanten laat zien ten opzichte van het oudere materiaal. Nog steeds wat goede straight industrial en ebm muziek op het album, maar dan iets moderner.

Wat is de oorsprong van de bandnaam?

David- Tragic Visions gaat door het leven als TV. De tv kan een doos met Tragic Visions zijn, een apparaat dat profiteert van je angsten, een gevaarlijk apparaat dat de geest van de kijker kan vervormen door middel van mediapropaganda. Dat is altijd het basisidee van de naam geweest.

Vele jaren later, als iemand een Tragic Visions-album vindt op de zolder van een oud huis en iets om het op af te spelen.... Wat zou je willen dat deze persoon weet over jullie nalatenschap als band?

Jess: Wel, we stoppen echt veel "ons" in onze muziek en live optredens. Ik zou graag denken dat we mensen hebben geïnspireerd om echt naar iets anders te reiken. Als je van industrial uit de jaren 90 houdt, koop dan een synth en maak industriële muziek (vul hier je stijl in). We vonden het altijd geweldig op het podium om het publiek echt aan het denken te zetten of bang te maken of wat dan ook en we hebben ons nooit aan de regels gehouden. Hopelijk hebben we op zijn minst invloed gehad op onze kleinere gemeenschap.

Met de stijgende kosten van touren en de studiokosten kan het artiestenleven vaak een beetje onbetaalbaar zijn. Welk advies zou je iemand geven ondanks zulke uitdagingen?

David- Doe gewoon waar je van houdt.

Jess- Ondersteun je gemeenschap zoveel als je kunt en til elkaar samen op.
