ZWAREMACHINE

Zwaremachine is an EBM and industrial band from Minneapolis, United States. Over the next three weeks, the group will be touring Europe, with a number of dates in Belgium and the Netherlands. Incidentally, the band will consist of two Americans and two Dutch members. We also know Zwaremachine as the band Bas Mercx, also known as Dein Offizier, played in until his tragic death from leukemia in August 2023. All these interesting elements make it possible to let singer-composer Mach FoX tell his story.

Hi Mach. You are touring Europe in the coming weeks with Zwaremachine. How did this tour came to be?

Thank you Xavier for this interview. Zwaremachine had started booking shows in central Europe since the pre-covid period. We wanted to continue with our new lineup and book our 2025 tour dates to promote some recent singles that we have released and to continue to build audiences those areas.

Can you tell us how Zwaremachine was formed?

I had originally written and recorded a song titled ‘The Zwaremachine’ in 2011 and released it under the name Raumschiff on a German netlabel. That song was a bit of an experiment in sequencing a more electro-industrial style music. I liked the sounds and decided to pursue a solo project along those lines which would become Zwaremachine. I performed the first few Zwaremachine shows with a dj and myself. Later in 2017 I focused on writing and performing the songs that would become the first Zwaremachine album ‘Be A Light’. By then I had decided to add an electronic percussionist and synth player in order to fill out the live sound.

It’s not surprising that you come to Europe, since you have European musicians performing in the band. Let’s first talk about Bas Merxc, aka Dein Offizier, who was a percussionist in Zwaremachine. How did he join the band, and what was his role in the band?

Bas was friends with Kitty Sommer, a Dutch DJ who manages and books the band, and he had seen me perform a solo Zwaremachine show at the Nieuwe Nor Heerlen. We met and became online friends. I saw him posting really cool pics on social media from his percussion groups. He looked so badass in those pics that I decided to ask him to join the band on electronic drums, but he said he would prefer to play his surdo drum.

Shortly after we booked a Zwaremachine tour in Europe, we had one rehearsal together and left the same day for our first show together in France. At the rehearsal he was pounding his drum and singing along and I knew I made the right decision. We quickly became friends on that tour and I learned about his dedication, passion and humor.

Shortly after that I was able to come the Netherlands and record his drum for our second full length album ‘Conquest 3000’. I had expected his drum to become such an important element of our sound moving forward. With the addition of electric bass guitar and an acoustic drum we were able to create our own sound in the ebm/industrial style which we were proud of.

Unfortunately, Bas died in August 2023, shortly before you could play as an opener for EBM-legend Front 242. How did this loss affect Zwaremachine?

By this time we had been performing as a trio with the addition of Dbot on bass guitar. In October 2022, while Bas was in remission, we were able to do some shows in the Netherlands. During that time we were making plans as a band about how to approach the writing and recording of the next album. I had intended for all three members to contribute more than in the past. I really felt we were becoming a strong unit with this lineup and we were all looking forward to the future.

We were able to secure the support slot for Front 242. Everything was looking positive until Bas’s cancer reemerged and there were complications. As the date became closer, we realized he may not be fit enough to join us on stage. But we never expected he would not be there with us in some way, even if it wasn't for the whole set. Through conversations he had made it clear that no matter what happened he wanted us to continue on with the band.

Shortly before the concert he unfortunately passed away and we were devastated. I was able to move my flight up and attend his funeral which I felt was very important to pay my respects to a dear friend and bandmate. Personally for me it was the hardest and most surreal gig I have ever played. I know that bassist Dbot had a hard time as well. We honored Bas by having his drum and cap on stage with a spotlight and the final song of our set was dedicated to him with special visuals as well. I think the performance meant a lot to his friends who were there. For Dbot and I it was the best way we could say goodbye.

You have more musicians coming from the Netherlands, like Paul K and Marschal B. Tell us how this connection was established and how you came to play with these musicians?

I had met Paul K the first time I performed a Zwaremachine show in Europe since he was friends with Kitty and one of his bands was also on that show. We became friends at that time and stayed in touch after that. Marshal B and I met at a Zwaremachine concert shortly after the Front 242 gig which he had attended. He had recently joined Vuduvox on electronic percussion at the same time that I was trying to figure out the lineup and instrumentation for the band moving forward.

We discussed having them both join Zwaremachine and performed for the first time together in February 2024 billed as Mach FoX. But we were doing a set of Zwaremachine songs to feel out this lineup. Luckily they decided to join the band and we have been working hard since then on new songs and recordings.

Even though Zwaremachine was sometimes referred to as your personal project, you worked with different people on an international level. What did you gain by involving other people in your project?

I have always enjoyed collaborations but also the freedom to solely dictate the sound design and direction of the band. I started playing in punk and alternative bands that were much more of a voting democracy when writing and recording. When I started Zwaremachine as a solo project, and later adding additional members, I still wanted to produce the music myself and create the sonic vibe to fit my tastes for live performance.

Along the way I have also brought in some outside producers. And bassist Dbot has contributed many songs as he is a talented musician and songwriter. Having the other contributors has given me more ideas to pull from and a stronger sound palette to work from.

Zwaremachine is your main project, but you have your own solo project under your name Mach FoX. Why was it important to make a distinction between the two?

I had been performing as Mach FoX since 2005 and the earliest albums were electro-rock style with a lineup that included two members that would later perform in Zwaremachine. Bassist Dbot joined Zwaremachine in late 2019 and Adam01 performed with Zwaremachine in 2018 during the release of the ‘Be A Light’ album.

Once Zwaremachine became my main focus for live performance I still continued to write and release music as Mach FoX. I use that name to release music that does not quite fit the Zwaremachine sound. I am able to keep Mach FoX releases a bit more open in regards to genre.

A new release by your solo project, Mach FoX, will be released, including segments played by both Bas Merxc/Dein Offizier and bass player Dbot. If I understand this well, these recordings were meant to be part of a future Zwaremachine release. Why do you release them solo?

The original demo versions were intended for Zwaremachine but later evolved quite a bit and became so different that I did not feel they would fit in our live set. One intention when writing for Zwaremachine is that the songs should be more industrial/EBM style. After Bas passed away there were long periods of time when I just could not bring myself to work on those songs since it was too heavy to hear his drum on those tracks.

When Paul K joined the band on guitar and I got motivated to finish those songs and I decided to delete many of the original synth parts and record my guitar so the songs could become a bit more industrial rock. I just let my ideas flow into the recordings with no intentions of genre... figuring it was the Zwaremachine lineup of myself, Dbot and Dein Offizier on the recordings. It would then be our third album. But as the final mixes were coming together it was obvious the songs just were not going to fit in our live set, so it would be better to release them as Mach FoX, since I still liked the songs. I then could start fresh for the Zwaremachine album and get both Paul K and Marshal B on the new songs.

The latest release by Zwaremachine was the EP ‘Waking The Night’, which contains several singles and remixes. What was the idea behind this EP? Do you consider making new releases – and especially the third Zwaremachine full disc – soon?

We did release a few singles intended for the third Zwaremachine album but I think we will start over for what will become that release. ‘Waking The Night’ became a bit of closure for our period with Bas/Dein Offizier since he also plays on that song. As a final tribute, we put his image on the artwork.

After these Fall 2025 tour dates I will return to the US and prepare my studio for writing and recording sessions for the new Zwaremachine songs that will become our third album.

You come from Minneapolis in Minnesota, the United States. The latest news from this region is about a shooting in a catholic school where two children died and seventeen got wounded. In the past, the goth community – I am thinking about the Columbine shooting in 1999 – was also associated with this kind of shootings. I would like to know your thoughts on these shootings.

Any shootings like this should not be tolerated. The idea of killing innocent people is not something I can comprehend. I feel like things will get much worse before they get better.

Zwaremachine is een EBM- en industrialgroep uit Minneapolis in de Verenigde Staten. De komende drie weken tourt de groep door Europa, met heel wat data in België en Nederland. De groep zal er trouwens bestaan uit twee Amerikanen en twee Nederlanders. Zwaremachine kennen we ook als de groep waarin Bas Mercx, ook bekend als Dein Offizier, gespeeld heeft tot aan zijn tragisch overlijden door leukemie in augustus 2023. Allemaal interessante elementen om zanger-componist Mach FoX zijn verhaal eens te laten doen.

Hoi Mach. Je toert de komende weken door Europa met Zwaremachine. Hoe is deze tour ontstaan?

Bedankt Xavier voor dit interview. Zwaremachine was al vóór de coronacrisis begonnen met het boeken van shows in Centraal-Europa. We wilden doorgaan met onze nieuwe line-up en onze tourdata voor 2025 vastleggen om een aantal recent uitgebrachte singles te promoten en het publiek in die gebieden verder uit te breiden.

Kun je ons vertellen hoe Zwaremachine is ontstaan?

Ik had oorspronkelijk in 2011 een nummer geschreven en opgenomen met de titel ‘The Zwaremachine’ en het onder de naam Raumschiff uitgebracht op een Duits netlabel. Dat nummer was een beetje een experiment in het sequencen van een meer electro-industriële muziekstijl. Ik vond het geluid mooi en besloot een soloproject in die richting te beginnen, wat Zwaremachine zou worden. Ik speelde de eerste paar Zwaremachine-shows met een dj en mezelf. Later in 2017 concentreerde ik me op het schrijven en uitvoeren van de nummers die het eerste Zwaremachine-album ‘Be A Light’ zouden worden. Tegen die tijd had ik besloten om een elektronische percussionist en een synthesizerspeler toe te voegen om het livegeluid te versterken.

Het is niet verwonderlijk dat je naar Europa komt, aangezien er Europese muzikanten in de band spelen. Laten we het eerst hebben over Bas Mercx, oftewel Dein Offizier, die percussionist was bij Zwaremachine. Hoe is hij bij de band gekomen en wat was zijn rol in de band?

Bas was bevriend met Kitty Sommer, een Nederlandse dj die de band managet en boekt, en Bas had mij een solo Zwaremachine-show zien spelen in Nieuwe Nor Heerlen. We ontmoetten elkaar en werden online vrienden. Ik zag hem op sociale media echt coole foto’s plaatsen van zijn percussiegroepen. Hij zag er zo stoer uit op die foto’s dat ik besloot hem te vragen om met de band mee te doen op elektronische drums, maar hij zei dat hij liever op zijn surdo drum wilde spelen.

Kort nadat we een Zwaremachinetour in Europa hadden geboekt, hadden we één repetitie samen en vertrokken diezelfde dag voor onze eerste show samen in Frankrijk. Tijdens de repetitie beukte hij op zijn drum en zong hij mee, en ik wist dat ik de juiste beslissing had genomen. We werden al snel vrienden tijdens die tour en ik leerde zijn toewijding, passie en humor kennen.

Kort daarna kon ik naar Nederland komen om zijn drums op te nemen voor ons tweede volledige album ‘Conquest 3000’. Ik had verwacht dat zijn drums een belangrijk element in onze sound zouden worden. Met de toevoeging van een elektrische basgitaar en een akoestische drum konden we ons eigen geluid creëren in de ebm/industrial-stijl waar we trots op waren.

Helaas overleed Bas in augustus 2023, kort voordat je als voorprogramma kon spelen voor EBM-legende Front 242. Hoe heeft dit verlies Zwaremachine beïnvloed?

We traden inmiddels op als trio, met de toevoeging van Dbot op basgitaar. In oktober 2022, terwijl Bas in remissie was, konden we een aantal optredens in Nederland doen. In die tijd maakten we als band plannen over hoe we het schrijven en opnemen van het volgende album zouden aanpakken. Het was de bedoeling dat alle drie de leden meer zouden bijdragen dan voorheen. Ik had echt het gevoel dat we met deze line-up een sterke eenheid vormden en we keken allemaal uit naar de toekomst.

We wisten het voorprogramma van Front 242 te bemachtigen. Alles zag er positief uit totdat zijn kanker terugkwam en er complicaties optraden. Naarmate de datum dichterbij kwam, realiseerden we ons dat hij misschien niet fit genoeg zou zijn om met ons mee op het podium te staan, maar we hadden nooit verwacht dat hij er niet bij zou zijn, al was het maar voor een deel van de set. Door middel van gesprekken had hij duidelijk gemaakt dat hij, wat er ook gebeurde, wilde dat we met de band doorgingen.

Kort voor het concert overleed hij helaas. We waren er kapot van. Ik kon mijn vlucht verzetten en zijn begrafenis bijwonen, wat ik erg belangrijk vond om mijn respect te betuigen aan een dierbare vriend en bandlid. Persoonlijk was het voor mij het moeilijkste en meest surrealistische optreden dat ik ooit heb gegeven. Ik weet dat bassist Dbot het ook moeilijk had. We hebben Bas geëerd door zijn drum en pet op het podium te zetten met een spotlight, en het laatste nummer van onze set was ook aan hem opgedragen met speciale visuals. Ik denk dat het optreden veel betekende voor zijn vrienden die erbij waren. Voor Dbot en mij was het de beste manier om afscheid te nemen.

Er komen meer muzikanten uit Nederland, zoals Paul K en Marshal B. Vertel eens hoe deze connectie tot stand is gekomen en hoe jullie met deze muzikanten zijn gaan spelen?

Ik ontmoette Paul K de eerste keer dat ik een Zwaremachine-show in Europa speelde, omdat hij bevriend was met Kitty en een van zijn bands ook op die show speelde. We werden toen vrienden en hielden daarna contact. Marshal B en ik ontmoetten elkaar op een Zwaremachine-concert kort na het optreden van Front 242 waar hij was geweest. Hij was onlangs bij Vuduvox gekomen op elektronische percussie, terwijl ik probeerde de line-up en instrumentatie voor de band in de toekomst te bepalen.

We hebben besproken om hen beiden bij Zwaremachine te laten komen en traden voor het eerst samen op in februari 2024, onder de naam Mach FoX. Maar we speelden een set Zwaremachine-nummers om deze line-up te verkennen. Gelukkig besloten ze zich bij de band aan te sluiten en we werken sindsdien hard aan nieuwe nummers en opnames.

Hoewel Zwaremachine soms je persoonlijke project werd genoemd, heb je – zoals we net gezien hebben – internationaal met verschillende mensen samengewerkt. Wat heb je bereikt door anderen bij je project te betrekken?

Ik heb altijd genoten van samenwerkingen, maar ook van de vrijheid om zelf het sounddesign en de richting van de band te bepalen. Ik begon met spelen in punk- en alternatieve bands die veel meer een stemdemocratie hadden tijdens het schrijven en opnemen. Toen ik Zwaremachine als soloproject begon en later extra leden toevoegde, wilde ik de muziek nog steeds zelf produceren en de sonische vibe creëren die bij mijn smaak voor liveoptredens paste.

Gaandeweg heb ik ook een aantal externe producers ingeschakeld. En bassist Dbot heeft veel nummers bijgedragen, omdat hij een getalenteerde muzikant en songwriter is. De andere bijdragers hebben me meer ideeën gegeven om uit te putten en een sterker klankpalet om mee te werken.

Zwaremachine is je hoofdproject, maar je hebt ook je eigen soloproject onder de naam Mach FoX. Waarom was het belangrijk om onderscheid te maken tussen de twee?

Ik trad sinds 2005 op als Mach FoX en de eerste albums waren in electrorockstijl met een line-up met twee leden die later zouden optreden bij Zwaremachine. Bassist Dbot sloot zich eind 2019 aan bij Zwaremachine en Adam01 speelde in 2018 met Zwaremachine tijdens de release van het album ‘Be A Light’.

Toen Zwaremachine mijn belangrijkste focus voor liveoptredens werd, bleef ik muziek schrijven en uitbrengen als Mach FoX. Ik gebruik die naam om muziek uit te brengen die niet helemaal bij de Zwaremachine-sound past. Ik kan Mach FoX-releases wat opener houden wat betreft genres.

Er komt nu een nieuwe uitgave van je soloproject Mach FoX uit, met fragmenten gespeeld door zowel Dein Offizier als bassist Dbot. Als ik het goed begrijp, waren deze opnames bedoeld als onderdeel van een toekomstige uitgave van Zwaremachine. Waarom breng je ze solo uit?

De originele demoversies waren bedoeld voor Zwaremachine, maar evolueerden later behoorlijk en werden zo anders dat ik vond dat ze niet in onze liveset pasten. Een van de bedoelingen bij het schrijven voor Zwaremachine was dat de nummers meer industrial/ebm-stijl moesten hebben. Na Bas’ overlijden waren er lange periodes waarin ik mezelf er gewoon niet toe kon zetten om aan die nummers te werken, omdat het te zwaar was om zijn drums op die tracks te horen.

Toen Paul K op gitaar bij de band kwam en ik gemotiveerd raakte om die nummers af te maken, besloot ik veel van de originele synthpartijen te verwijderen en er mijn gitaar bij op te nemen, zodat de nummers wat meer industrial rock konden worden. Ik liet mijn ideeën gewoon in de opnames stromen, zonder enige intentie qua genre... in de veronderstelling dat het de Zwaremachine-bezetting was van mijzelf, Dbot en Dein Offizier op de opnames. Het zou dan ons derde album worden.

Maar toen de laatste mixen vorm kregen, werd het duidelijk dat de nummers gewoon niet in onze liveset zouden passen, dus dat het zou beter zijn om ze als Mach FoX uit te brengen, aangezien ik de nummers nog steeds goed vond. Daarna kon ik helemaal opnieuw beginnen aan het Zwaremachine-album en zowel Paul K als Marshal B op de nieuwe nummers krijgen.

De laatste release van Zwaremachine was de recente ep ‘Waking The Night’, die verschillende singles en remixen bevat. Wat was het idee achter deze ep? Overweeg je om binnenkort nieuwe releases uit te brengen – en met name de derde full disc van Zwaremachine?

We hebben een paar singles uitgebracht die bedoeld waren voor het derde Zwaremachine-album, maar ik denk dat we opnieuw beginnen met wat die release zal worden. ‘Waking The Night’ was een soort afsluiting van onze periode met Bas/Dein Offizier, aangezien hij ook op dat nummer meespeelt. Als laatste eerbetoon hebben we zijn afbeelding op het artwork geplaatst.

Na deze tourdata in de herfst van 2025 keer ik terug naar de VS om mijn studio klaar te maken voor schrijf- en opnamesessies voor de nieuwe Zwaremachine-nummers die ons derde album zullen worden.

Je komt uit Minneapolis in Minnesota, Verenigde Staten. Het laatste nieuws uit deze regio gaat over een schietpartij op een katholieke school waarbij twee kinderen omkwamen en zeventien gewond raakten. Vroeger werd de gothicgemeenschap – ik denk aan de schietpartij op Columbine in 1999 – ook geassocieerd met dit soort schietpartijen. Ik ben benieuwd naar jouw mening over deze schietpartijen.

Zulke schietpartijen zouden niet getolereerd moeten worden. Het idee om onschuldige mensen te doden, kan ik niet begrijpen. Ik heb het gevoel dat het veel erger zal worden voordat het beter wordt.
