The Walerian Borowczyk Collection - individual Blu-rays released 8th September

13th of August 2014, 18:47

This year, Arrow Academy invites you to rediscover the amazing work of painter, sculptor and filmmaker Walerian Borowczyk (1923-2006) with the first major UK retrospective celebrating his prolific body of work, focusing on his artwork, short films, pioneering animations and live-action features, many of which have been rarely seen or previously unseen on video in the UK.

Arrow Academy’s ground-breaking Camera Obscura: The Walerian Borowczyk Collection brings together key films from the artist’s twenty five year period stretching from 1959 through to 1984. This unique release includes five of Borowczyk’s provocative feature films: The Theatre of Mr and Mrs Kabal, Goto, Isle of Love, Blanche, Immoral Tales and The Beast as well as his shorts and animation.

Though the box set is sold out, each of these films is available individually on Blu-ray and DVD for the first time from the 8th September, in a new digital high definition restoration supervised by leading expert James White and approved by the director’s widow, Ligia Borowczyk. In addition to exclusive documentaries featuring cast and crew, the full collection includes an hour long portrait of Borowczyk, featuring the director’s musings on painting, animation and sex.

Arrow Films have overseen the extensive restoration on Camera Obscura: The Walerian Borowczyk Collection. Not only will many of these films available on Blu-ray and DVD for the first time, but accompanying this seminal release will be exclusive documentaries, a book edited by Daniel Bird and Michael Brooke featuring newly commissioned essays on Borowczyk’s films and art, as well as an account of the meticulous restoration process involved plus for the first time, an English translation of Borowczyk’s 1992 collection of short stories, Anatomy of the Devil, translated by the director's assistant, Michael Levy.

Daniel Bird producer of the new restorations said, “The process of researching and restoring these films has been decades in the making and a real labour of love for me. Thanks to Ligia Borowczyk, Arrow Films as well as everybody who took part in the Kickstarter campaign to restore 'Goto, Isle of Love and the remaining French short films', we are now finally in a position to rediscover Borowczyk's work and re-evaluate his contribution to film history’.

NEWS Coal Chamber returns

Coal Chamber returns

13th of August 2014, 18:36

Napalm Records is pleased to announce the signing of Los Angeles, California’s COAL CHAMBER, a band that stood as leaders at the forefront of new genres, constantly reinventing their sound and not fitting any mold except their own. With sold out tours, and millions of records sold, COAL CHAMBER owned the Scene from the mid nineties until their tumultuous breakup in May of 2002. Now they have returned to take their place at the top where they once were and intend to be there for years to come. Call it what you want, “The Return”, “The Second Coming of”, but no matter what you call it, be prepared COAL CHAMBER to rule again.

Following a 12-plus year breakup the band reunited in 2011 and 2013 for Festival shows as well as an extensive North American tour. Now all four members (Dez Fafara, Nadja Peulen, Mikey Cox, Meegs) have decided the time was right to begin work on a new COAL CHAMBER album. The band is currently working on the new material that they hope to release next year.

COAL CHAMBER spoke about their new record and signing with Napalm Records:

“How many times do you get a second chance at anything in life? We toured the world, it was insane and crowds came out in force and we had a blast! For this I'm so appreciative!

Now..... It's time to release a NEW COAL CHAMBER RECORD!

The Vibe between us all is positive AND we've assembled a killer team around us!

Now with NAPALM RECORDS on board get ready for a heavy, explosion from COAL CHAMBER! We've evolved and so has the music, from the demo music I've heard you’re gonna sink your TEETH into this! Stay tuned!” ~ Dez Fafara

“It's been a long time coming but the wait is over! There are no words to describe how excited I am to be working on the new COAL CHAMBER record!!! I can't wait to see all your faces when we rock this album out! Stay tuned!!!” ~ Nadja

“This is the first time in a long time that writing and recording a record feels right. Extremely grateful and excited for this new chapter in the world of COAL CHAMBER!! New music from CC is something we can't wait to share with the many loyal fans that have stuck it out through everything!!! The evolution of COAL CHAMBER has begun!” ~ Mikey Cox

"I'm so excited to be making music with my brothers and sister, and to the loyal fans who've been waiting for this! It's been a long time coming, but the pieces of the puzzle are finally aligned right. The friendship, the camaraderie, the vibe of the band is perfect now. Can't wait to unleash on the world!" ~ MEEGS

Napalm Records Vice President Thomas Caser on the signing of COAL CHAMBER:

“Rarely you get the chance to work with a band that has been a pioneer of a whole genre. We are thrilled and proud to get this chance with COAL CHAMBER! A new chapter of the band’s history is being written and Napalm Records is committed to make it the most successful!”

More info regarding the new album will be revealed soon!

NEWS Lauren Bacall dies

Lauren Bacall dies

13th of August 2014, 07:55

One day after the death of icon Robin Williams, more sad news from the stars arrive with the death of Lauren Bacall.

Bacall suffered a massive stroke at her New York home on Tuesday morning 12th August, a family member said.

"With deep sorrow, yet with great gratitude for her amazing life, we confirm the passing of Lauren Bacall," the Bogart Estate said on Twitter.

They appeared together in several films, including The Big Sleep (1946) and Key Largo (1948).

She was born Betty Joan Perske on September 16, 1924, in New York City, the only child of immigrant parents.

After her parents' divorce, she adopted a variation of her mother's maiden name, Bacal.

The public knew her as Lauren, the screen name hung on her by director Howard Hawks, while friends called her Betty.

Bogart simply called her "Baby", in a love story that ended prematurely with his death from throat cancer at the age of 57.

Bacall had set out to be a Broadway star. She played small roles on stage and modelled for Harper's Bazaar magazine, which published a photograph of her that was spotted by Hawks' wife.

Bacall was only 19 when Hawks cast her in her first movie, 1944's To Have and Have Not, as an American girl who shows up at a seedy hotel in Martinique.

She won a place in Hollywood history when she purred to Bogart, "You know how to whistle, don't you? You just put your lips together - and blow."

They wed the next year after he ended his turbulent third marriage to actress Mayo Methot.

Bacall and Bogart went on to star together in The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947) and Key Largo (1948).

Bacall starred in more than 30 other films including How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) with Marilyn Monroe and Designing Woman (1957) with Gregory Peck.

His cult score for 'Only God Forgives' will also be on the programme. In line with tradition, the WSA also welcomes Dan Romer, who was crowned Discovery of 2013. The former frontman and acoustic guitar player of indie rock band 'Fire Flies' earned this title for his score of the feature 'Beasts of the Southern Wild'.

Francis Lai and Flemish composer Jef Neve

Following the 41st Film Fest Gent’s focus on France, the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to French composer Francis Lai at the 14th World Soundtrack Awards. In addition to the oeuvre of Lai, Jef Neve’s captivating music for the prestigious Flemish drama series 'In Flanders Fields' will also be getting some well-deserved attention.
