We almost began to worry but today Black Easter has announced its complete and impressive line-up!
When Black Easter inspirer (and fellow Peek-a-Boo founder) Ward De Prins unexpectedly passed away on 14 February last year, some of his best friends decided to still make his dream come true. After all, Ward had already started to plan a new edition of Black Easter for 2019! Based on a wish list and a selection of artists who performed on one of the previous editions, these friends have now succeeded in putting together a stunning and diverse line-up.
So from the early start on Saturday 20 April they kick-off strongly with Post-Goth-Rockers YOUR LIFE ON HOLD (B). Up-and-coming Belgian talent who surprised friend and foe with their debut album 'Burning for the ancient connection'.
Then The Breath of Life, who already played Black Easter in 2015, will enchant you with a firm dose of Gothic-Rock drenched in the angel-sweet voice of frontwoman Isabelle Dekeyser.
Also EVI VINE (UK) and her following stand ready to take you on their Folk-Tronica trip. A journey interspersed with dreamy sounds and dark atmospheres with which she mesmerized the Black Easter 2016 audience once before.
As a Co-headliner, none other than artistic centipede and Gothic icon MONICA RICHARDS (US) (Faith & The Muse), together with her partner in crime Anthony Jones (US) (Monastic), will take the Zappa stage. Did you know, the Black Easter's poster background of this edition is based on a painting by Monica Richards herself?!
Anyway, to finish off this great first night in a true feast, CLAN OF XYMOX (NL / D) has also been added as a headliner! Chief Ronny Moorings and his band members will present you with a mix of new work and of course a lot of their classics!
On Sunday 21 April there seems to be no time for a warm-up as this Easter Sunday will immediately begin at a high level with SIEBEN (UK)! The solo project of violin virtuoso and eccentric Matt Howden. Matt Howden worked in the past with almost innumerable artists like Sol Invictus (UK), Tony Wakeford (UK), L'Orchestra Noir (UK), L'Ame Immortelle (AT), Emilie Autumn (USA), Faith & The Muse (USA), The Wand And The Moon (DK ), Larsen (IT), Spiritual Front (IT), Shock Headed Peters (UK), Hekate (DE), Job Karma (PL)... Whilst only armed with one microphone, one violin and a loop pedal, he still manages to create the impression that there is a whole band on stage!
Something JO QAIL (UK), who uses approximately the same arsenal, is very good at too. But instead of a violin, she chose to bring her cello along as her favourite instrument. This pleasant and entertaining appearance also succeeds in mesmerizing her audience with her musical creations. No music genre is out of her league as you will hear!
One of the big surprises of this Black Easter edition is the passage of no-one less than ALEXANDER HACKE (EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN) and his life companion DANIELLE DE PICCIOTTO (SPACE COWBOYS). Together they travel the world and the seven seas performing and composing beautiful music under the moniker HACKEDEPICCIOTTO. Their compositions are mostly built around cinematic drone sounds with avant-garde influences and elements from world music, Krautrock and so much more.
And of course, there is no better way to end this Black Easter weekend than seeing the German über Goth band GOETHES ERBEN perform! OSWALD HENKE and his entourage were already present at the very first edition back in 2015 and always deliver a great concert! As we are used from them Henke will not only play some new stuff but will also spoil his fans with a bunch of Goethes Erben classics!
Black Easter lost volledige line-up!
Het was even bang afwachten maar vandaag heeft Black Easter zijn volledige en toch wel indrukwekkende line-up bekendgemaakt!
Toen Black Easter bezieler (en mede Peek-a-Boo-oprichter) Ward De Prins op 14 februari van vorig jaar onverwacht overleed, besloten enkele van zijn beste vrienden om alsnog zijn droom waar te maken. Ward was immers al volop met hen aan het plannen om in 2019 een nieuwe editie van Black Easter neer te zetten! Op basis van een wenslijstje en een selectie van artiesten die al eens op één de vorige edities optraden zijn deze vrienden er in geslaagd een mooie diverse line-up samen te stellen.
Zo wordt er op zaterdag 20 april al meteen van bij het begin stevig ingevlogen met the Post-Goth-Rockers van YOUR LIFE ON HOLD (B). Aanstormend Belgisch talent dat vriend en vijand wist te verrassen met hun debuutalbum ‘Burning for the ancient connection’.
Ook The Breath of Life, die in 2015 al eens op Black Easter stonden, komen u betoveren met een dosis Gothic-Rock overgoten door de engelzoete stem van front vrouw Isabelle Dekeyser.
Daarna is het de beurt aan EVI VINE (UK) en haar gezelschap om u mee te nemen op hun Folk-Tronica trip. Een trip doorspekt met dromerige klanken en door donkere sferen en waarmee ze op Black Easter 2016 het publiek mee vervoerde.

Op zondag 21 april is er geen opener voorzien maar begint het paasfeest meteen op hoog niveau met SIEBEN (UK), soloproject van vioolvirtuoos en excentriekeling Matt Howden. Meeteen daarna volgt JO QAIL (UK) die ongeveer het zelfde arsenaal gebruikt maar in plaats van een viool de cello als haar geliefkoosd instrument heeft meegebracht. Ook deze aangename verschijning slaagt erin haar publiek in te pakken met haar creaties. Geen muziekgenre is haar te min en er zal heel wat de revue passeren!
Een van de grote verrassingen van deze editie van Black Easter is toch wel de passage van niemand minder dan ALEXANDER HACKE (EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN) en zijn levensgezel DANIELLE DE PICCIOTTO (SPACE COWBOYS). Samen trekken zij de wereld rond en maken ze prachtige muziek onder de noemer HACKEDEPICCIOTTO. Hun composities zijn meestal opgebouwd rond filmisch dronegeluiden met avantgardistische invloeden en elementen uit de wereldmuziek en Krautrock.
En natuurlijk is er geen beter manier om dit Black Easter-weekend af te sluiten dan met de Duitse über Goth band GOETHES ERBEN! OSWALD HENKE en zijn gevolg waren reeds present op de allereerste editie in 2015 en staan garant voor een waar feest! Henke heeft alvast beloofd om naast splinternieuw werk, ook nu weer zijn fans te verwennen met hun grootse klassiekers!
It's no coincidence Darkness On Demand shares the same initials with the renown, but long gone German 90's dark electro band Dance Or Die, as they resurrected from the ashes from the latter mentioned cult band. Even soundwise the original spirit has never been far away...
"Detoxination" is also the title song of the upcoming new album. Here the band around Falgalas and Wagner settles down with the digitally poisoned world in which everyone is degenerated to cyborgs.
Besides remixes of Detoxination there are 3 more non-album tracks on this 6 track EP.
“Why don't you tell me" also deals with the topic of collective unification and the loss of humanoid individuality, while “Gates of Heaven” is about escaping from this cold robot world.
Another very interesting song is "All Human", which comes in proven "Dance or Die" style and will inspire the fans of the first hour. The EP is rounded off by the extended version of "Detoxination", as well as the remixes of "Intent Outtake" and "evo-lution".

Today, exactly 41 years ago, Joy Division played their very first live concert!
Today, exactly 41 ago, Joy Division made their live debut at the Pips Disco in Manchester (25 January 1978). Only a few years later it became clear they would become one of the most influential British bands in music history.
Originally, the gentlemen Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris were announced as Warsaw, their original band name, taken from one of Ian Curtis’ favorite albums, Low by David Bowie. However, when the concert was announced, it became clear there was already another band that called themselves Warsaw Packt. So to avoid confusion, a new name was quickly sought and it was singer Ian Curtis who came up with the name Joy Division. He found the name in a book that he was reading at the time. The book was called 'The House Of Dolls', written by Holocaust survivor Ka-Tsetnik 135633 alias Yehiel De-Nur. The number in the author's name refers to the number that was tattooed in his arm by the Nazis during the second world war. In this book, the author describes a brothel the Nazis installed in the concentration camp and wherein Jewish women were forced into prostitution to serve the camp guards and the nearby stationed and passing German troops. The Nazis called the brothel mockingly the Joy Division.
As a matter of fact, The House of Dolls topic is also mentioned in the Warsaw song No Love Lost, a song that would later be featured on the Joy Division debut EP ‘An Ideal For A Living'.
This sudden change of name right before their first performance on 25 January 1978 did not help the draw for this show. The public therefore mainly consisted of friends, something common for debut show. Witnesses described the atmosphere as very intense, even so intense Ian Curtis himself was thrown out of the venue, for breaking some beer glasses, and this happened even before their show had started. So the other band members had the greatest difficulty convincing the security people to let their singer back in. When they started playing eventually the tension was so high a massive pogo broke out which, according to witnesses, ended in one big fight.
During their short existence the band managed to build a bridge between 70's Punk and the emerging 80’s electronic music. Joy Division is also one of those few bands who still sees their fanbase grow and still appeal to the younger generations.
After the suicide of singer Ian Curtis (RIP 18.05.1980), the remaining band members, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris continued as New Order with Sumner becomming their singer. Bass player Peter Hook left New Order in 2007 to found his own band Monaco but in 2010 he changed the name to Peter Hook & The Light. With this project he successfully paid tribute to Ian Curtis & Joy Division since, playing Joy Division albums in their entirety, live.

Het is vandaag precies 41 jaar geleden dat Joy Division zijn live-debuut maakte in de Pips Disco te Manchester (25 Januari 1978). Enkele jaren later al zou blijken dat zij één van de meest invloedrijke Britse bands uit de muziek geschiedenis zouden worden.
Oorspronkelijk werden de heren Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, en Stephen Morris aangekondigd als Warsaw, hun oorspronkelijke bandnaam. Die naam hadden ze ontleend aan één van Ian Curtis' favoriete platen, Low van David Bowie. Maar toen het concert werd aangekondigd bleek er al een band te bestaand die Warschau Pact heette. Om verwarring te voorkomen werd dus snel een nieuwe naam gezocht en het was alweer zanger Ian Curtis die met de naam Joy Division op de proppen kwam. Die haalde hij deze keer uit een boek dat hij op dat moment aan het lezen was: ‘The House Of Dolls’, geschreven door holocaust-overlever Ka-Tsetnik 135633 alias Yehiel De-Nur. Het nummer in zijn auteursnaam verwijst naar het nummer dat op zijn arm werd getatoeëerd door de Nazi’s tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog. In zijn boek beschrijft de auteur een bordeel dat de Nazi’s hadden opgericht in het concentratiekamp waarin Joodse vrouwen tot prostitutie werden gedwongen ten dienste van de kampbewakers en voor de nabij gelegerde en doortrekkende Duitsers. De Nazi’s noemden het bordeel spottende de Joy Division.
Het House of Dolls-topic wordt trouwens ook aangehaald in het Warsaw-nummer No Love Lost, een song dat wat later ook op Joy Divisions debuut EP ‘An Ideal For A Living’ zou prijken.
Deze plotse naamsverandering net voor het eerste optreden op 25 januari 1978 droeg natuurlijk niet bij tot de opkomst voor deze debuutshow. Het publiek bestond dan ook voornamelijk uit vrienden, zoals dat meestal bij een debutoptreden gaat. De sfeer was zeer gespannen, zo gespannen dat Ian Curtis zelve al uit de zaal gegooid werd voor het breken van enkele glazen, en dit nog voor de start van het optreden. De andere bandleden hadden de grootste moeite om de veiligheidsmensen te overtuigen hun zanger terug binnen te laten. Al van bij de eerste noten brak een massale pogo uit die, volgens getuigen, eindigde in één grote vechtpartij.
Met hun muziek sloeg de groep erin een brug te leggen tussen 70’s Punk en de opkomende elektronische muziek van het volgende decennium. Joy Division is één van de weinige bands, die posthuum, haar aanhang nog steeds ziet groeien en het ook nog steeds zeer goed doet bij nieuwe en jongere generaties.
Na de zelfmoord van Ian Curtis (18.05.1980) gingen de overgebleven bandleden, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, en Stephen Morris verder onder de naam New Order en werd Sumner de zanger van de groep. Bassist Peter Hook verliet in 2007 New Order en richtte zijn eigen band Monaco op.
In 2010 doopte diezelfde Hook zijn band om naar Peter Hook & The Light waarmee hij sindsdien succesvol een hommage brengt aan Ian Curtis & Joy Division door alle albums in hun volledigheid live te brengen.

Today, exactly 28 years ago, Front 242 released the album Tyranny ▶For You◀
Today it is exactly 28 years since one of the most succesful EBM bands and founders Front 242 released Tyranny ▶For You◀ (24-01-1991).
Tyranny ▶For You◀ is Front 242's fifth studio album and featured twelve tracks. Three of those tracks were released as separate CD/12" singles; Rhythm Of Time, Mixed By Fear and Tragedy ▶For You◀. Both music videos for Tragedy ▶For You◀ (Directed by Anthon Corbijn) and Rhythm Of Time (Directed by Peter Christopherson of Coil) got a frequent rotation on MTV. The video of Rhythm Of Time also appeared briefly on a TV-set in the background during a scene of the film Single White Female.

On this day, only one years ago, Mark E. Smith, singer of legendary post-punk band The Fall died, aged 60.
Mark E. Smith was born in the UK 1957 and founded The Fall in 1976 together with Tony Friel and Martin Bramah. Smith remained the only original member of the band to this day. During the 38 years of their existence, the group seemed to be more of a pigeon-loft than a coherent rock band as Smith hired and sacked musicians as if it was a sweet delight, so more than sixty musicians passed through The Fall.
It was already clear for a while now the singer had serious health problems since a number of planned shows were cancelled late 2017. Still, he didn’t seem willing to give up and even performed one of their latest shows in a wheelchair.
One of the hallmarks of The Fall was the unmistakable voice and manner of singing by Mark E. Smith. He rather mumbled his lyrics through the microphone than he was singing and therefore it was not always clear what he was singing.
The Fall was a very productive band, releasing nearly 80 albums in less than 39 years. Probably one of their most influential albums is the Hex Enduction Hour, released in 1982. To date, the band has been cited as a source of inspiration by musicians around the world.

Mark E. Smith, zanger van de legendarische post-punk The Fall overleden op 60-jarige leeftijd
Mark E. Smith werd geboren in de UK in 1957 en richtte The Fall op in 1976 samen met Tony Friel en Martin Bramah. Smith bleef het enige oorspronkelijke lid van de band tot op vandaag. Gedurende de 38 jaar van hun bestaan leek de groep ook eerder op een duiventil dan op een coherente rockgroep want Smith huurde en ontsloeg muzikanten dat het een lieve lust was, meer dan zestig muzikanten passeerden zo de revue bij The Fall.
Het ging al een tijdje niet goed met de gezondheid van de zanger en mede daardoor werden een aantal geplande shows in het na jaar van 2017 afgelast. Toch wist hij van geen ophouden en werkte zelfs een show af gezeten in een rolstoel.
Eén van de kenmerken van The Fall was het onmiskenbare stemgeluid en de manier van zingen van Mark E. Smith. Hij mompelde zijn teksten eerder door de microfoon en daardoor was niet altijd duidelijk wat hij precies zong.
The Fall was een zeer productieve groep en bracht bijna 80 albums uit op nog geen 39 jaar tijd. Waarschijnlijk één van hun meest invloedrijke albums is het in 1982 verschenen Hex Enduction Hour. Tot op heden wordt de band aangehaald als inspiratiebron door muzikanten over heel de wereld.
