B.A.A.D.M. presents a tribute to Derek Jarman,

26th of January 2014, 22:06

B.A.A.D.M. proudly presents a tribute to the artist and director Derek Jarman, who passed away twenty years ago. Three Belgian bands that display an affinity with his films will perform at Art Cinema OFFoff. The blue screen of Jarman’s radical testament Blue (1993) will be disconnected from the recorded sound and reinterpreted by the musicians. The lineup of this adventurous evening features sound artist Af Ursin (Timo van Luijk), the young cold wave band Maan and Vortex Campaign. Exclusively for this unique occasion, the members of Vortex Campaign, who in the eighties collaborated with Coil and The New Blockaders, will create new work. Followed by a Blue Party, The Blue Project promises to be a challenging live event.

Location:

Art Cinema OFFoff

Begijnhof Ter Hoye

Lange Violettestraat 237

B-9000 Gent

Doors: 8 pm / Start: 8.30 pm on Friday 28th February.

The Belgian record label B.A.A.D.M. stands for curated releases as artistic statements. Run by graphic designers Mathieu Serruys and Joris Verdoodt, its main interest lies in the exploration of music as a medium to evoke extramusical meanings, references, obsessions or strategies that can lay hidden behind sound.

Therefore B.A.A.D.M. welcomes musicians who stand out not only for their highly estimated perception of sound but also for their sensibility and awareness for the broader (sub)cultural spectrum and for their ability to create a highly personal atmospheric universe. B.A.A.D.M. honours those who are originators of unexpected beauty and vital rupture.

Dark Entries releases single by Lassigue Bendthaus

26th of January 2014, 15:02

Lassigue Bendthaus is the electro-industrial project of Uwe Schmidt aka Atom™ or Señor Coconut from Germany. Uwe Schmidt began making music in the early 1980s, first playing drums, then switching to programming a drum computer after he had heard a Linn Drum on the radio. In 1986 he co-founded the cassette label N.G. Medien, on which his first musical work under the name Lassigue Bendthaus, "The Engineer's Love", was released. Soon after, he started to work on what would become his first official record release, the album "Matter". The recordings and production began in 1986 and took almost 4 years, until the album finally came out in 1991 on the German Parade Amoureuse label.

Musically somewhere between late "Industrial" and "Electronic Body Music", yet already anticipating "Acid" and "Techno", this production managed to cause quite a stir, due to its advanced production techniques. Songs pay strong homage to Kraftwerk, approaching the early industrial dance scene with a softer sequential approach than most of his contemporaries. "Matter" is a hermetic reflection about the relationship between perception, nature, science, technology and labor. This reissue comprises the entire 1991 "Matter" LP, as well a bonus 7" record containing 2 tracks never before released on vinyl. All songs on "Matter" were recorded and mixed by Tobias Freund (Pink Elln).

All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl is housed in a jacket featuring the photographic traces of a high-energy photon hitting a proton. Each LP includes a 2-sided insert with original album reviews, press clippings, liner notes by Atom™ and photos.

Jamaica announce full details of their second album ‘Ventura’

26th of January 2014, 08:25

It had been three years since Jamaica’s debut album ‘No Problem’, when at the end of last year, the duo Antoine Hilaire and Florent Lyonnet emerged with news of their long awaited second album and a brand new track ‘Hello Again’.

‘Ventura’ is that second album, produced by Jamaica and Laurent d’Herbécourt (Phoenix), written and recorded between Los Angeles and Paris; it will be released on March 31st through Control Freak/[PIAS] Cooperative.

After the release of ‘No Problem’ - produced by Xavier de Rosnay (one half of Justice) - Jamaica quickly garnered attention with the killer singles ‘I Think I Like U 2’ and ‘Short and Entertaining’. Having toured the world for two years, they began thinking about their next record, the pair felt ambitious, without any weight or pressure.

‘Ventura’ is fed by fantasies of American culture, gathered from records and films, and also, the reality they discovered while touring in the U.S. They spent a month with Peter Franco (Daft Punk’s ‘Random Access Memories) in LA and mention a discovery in a literal sense: "We thought about for a while naming this album Pinta, Nina, Santa Maria, like one of Christopher Columbus's ships."

In the end, they named it ‘Ventura’. For the musicians, the name reminds them of its literal translation of "luck" and "fate", but also of the 72 Pontiac and of course, of Ventura Boulevard, one of the biggest roads in the San Fernando valley.

It’s on Ventura Boulevard where they worked with Peter Franco, they spent a month locked away in a house and its makeshift studio, surrounded by instruments borrowed from local musicians and having lots of guests dropping by. One day, TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe came by to sing soulful vocals on ‘Golden Times’. Another day, Chris Caswell, longtime collaborator of Paul Williams, gave them a hand with a few keyboards arrangements.

When they returned to Paris, they headed to Laurent d’Herbécourt’s (Phoenix) studio and found it the perfect place to finish their album. Unlike most studios, it’s bathed in daylight: "To us, ‘No Problem’ shows a clubby and nightly aspect of the band, while ‘Ventura’ is meant to be the daylight album for Jamaica."

Antoine and Florent's belief in a more organic and analogue sound was strengthened by Laurent d'Herbécourt, who helped to mix the record: "While mixing, he definitely pushed us further towards a "radio" oriented direction, in the most noble and Fleetwood Mac sense of the word. A sunny pop that hides more sensibility when one really pays attention."

Songs like ‘Two on Two’, ‘Golden Times’, ‘All Inclusive’ or ‘Ferris Wheeler’ are fueled by this feel-good music to listen to while driving along the Pacific Ocean. Other tracks reveal new leads for Jamaica, from the post-surf of ‘Turbo’ and ‘Same Smile’ to ‘Rushmore’s power ballad. ‘Ventura’ deserves to be played on a car stereo; the album radiates as much nonchalance as it does sophistication. It toys with the idea of a fantasized West Coast, from San Diego to Seattle, discovered over and over through its past and present times.

Tracklisting: 1. Two on Two, 2. Hello Again, 3. Houdini, 4. Golden Times, 5. All Inclusive, 6. Ferris Wheeler, 7. High Then Low, 8. Ricky, 9. Rushmore, 10. Turbo, 11. Same Smile, 12. Goodbye Friday
