Simply Media is delighted to announce the release of two fascinating World War Two documentaries Operation Barbarossa: The Russian German War and Last Words – The Battle For Arnhem Bridge, which shed light on rarely seen before events from WWII and come to DVD for the first time.
Operation Barbarossa: The Russian German War is an eye-opening account of the events that unfolded between the Russians and Germans on the Eastern Front during WWII. Narrated by Douglas Rein (The voice of HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey), this fascinating series, which features German and Russian film footage that has never before been seen outside those countries, comes to DVD on 24 August 2015.
Far more than a struggle between nations, it pitted tyrant against tyrant and evil ideology against evil ideology as the lives of tens of millions were consumed by the conflict. One in 10 Russians died. One in four Poles died and whole divisions of Italians, Romanians and Hungarians disappeared without a trace. On average, 17,800 people died every single day – and the war on the Russian/German front lasted for 1,400 days.
A sweeping musical score composed by Rick Hyslop (The Passion of the Christ), adds to the drama and captures every nuance of the tragedy of one of the darkest horror stories in the history of warfare.
The Battle of Arnhem was part of the Second World War’s largest airborne operation. Allied troops were sent to seize eight bridges in the German-held Dutch territory. The task was tragically overwhelming, and enemy forces soon overcame them. Of the 10,000 Allies dropped from the skies, only 1,500 returned.
In a poignant new documentary Last Words – The Battle For Arnhem Bridge directed by award-winning documentarian, cinematographer and photographer Roger Chapman, we witness the personal testimonies of British War Veterans and Dutch civilians as they remember the battle that formed a crucial part of Operation Market Garden. 70 years on from the event, it comes to DVD for the first time on 7 September 2015.

Benicio Del Toro may be gearing up to play the big bad in a galaxy far, far away. The Wrap is reporting that an offer has gone out to the Academy Award winner to play the villain in director Rian Johnson’s upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII!
Very little is known about the eighth “Saga” chapter of the hugely successful sci-fi fantasy franchise other than that Johnson is attached to both write and direct. The film, set for release May 26, 2017, will be produced by Ram Bergman and Kathleen Kennedy and will follow both J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens as well as the franchise’s first “anthology” film, director Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One.
Del Toro is no stranger to science fiction. He recently starred as The Collector in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. There was also a rumor back in 2011 that the star was being courted by Abrams to play the villain in what became Star Trek Into Darkness.
Starring Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anderson, Christina Chong and Miltos Yerolemou, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will debut in theaters on December 18. One of the true pioneers of 20th Century electronic music, Dieter Moebius, has passed away.
Moebius is among the most important figures in kosmische music, being responsible for co-founding experimental three-piece Kluster with Conrad Schnitzler and Hans-Joachim Roedelius. When Schnitzler left the band, Moebius and Roedelius became Cluster, and penned some of the era’s most important electronic albums, including the excellent Zuckerzeit and a collaboration with ambient music superstar Brian Eno.
Moebius and Schnitzler also founded Harmonia, with Neu!’s Michael Rother, and put together some of Krautrock’s most definitive records with the motorik Deluxe and the unusual, genre-defying Musik Von Harmonia. Moebius continued recording solo and collaborating prolifically over the last few years.
The news of Moebius’s passing was reported via Michael Rother’s Facebook page; according to Rother, Moebius died this morning, July 20. He is survived by his wife Irene.
