Zola Jesus has announced details of a brand new album, Taiga, out on 6 October 2014. Mute is proud to welcome Zola Jesus to our worldwide roster.
Nika, the 25-year-old behind Zola Jesus’ creative incarnations, is a singer, sole songwriter and producer. Written on Vashon Island, WA and mixed in Los Angeles, CA by Dean Hurley, Taiga follows the widely celebrated albums, Versions (2013) and Conatus (2011). This is Nika’s fourth full-length album release and the first single from the forthcoming 11-track album is ‘Dangerous Days’,
In regards to the album title, Nika explains, “Taiga is the Russian name for the boreal forest. For me it feels very alive… very expansive. It represents a feral, untapped world that could happily exist without us. There are taiga forests in Northern Wisconsin where I was raised, and also in Russia where my ancestors are from, so it also feels very native.”
Liberated in the present and connected to the past, this album is a transition for Zola Jesus. Masterful layers of composition are bathed in familiar atmospheric vocals, but a new sensibility is deeply present. Taiga is at once challenging and accessible, and is undeniably branded with what Nika terms a “piercing ambition.” Such encompassing purpose, she explains, would be impossible without a newfound sense of artistic self. The album is a declaration of that purpose; one faced with jarring clarity in both its content and production. Nika summates, “For me, it feels like my true debut, because it is the first time I have felt so open and liberated.”

With the release of The High Wire's new album 'Found In Honey' just three weeks away, the trio are pleased to share new track 'Angelspeech'.
The track showcases the London-based outfit's collective harmonies - also heard on new single 'LNOE' - with its clear electro-pop influences contrasted with twinkling keys. Listen here.
‘Found In Honey’ was produced by The High Wire, Andy Rugg and Rik Simpson (PJ Harvey, Portishead) and was recorded at Coldplay’s Beehive Studio in London. While R&B, psychedelia, shoegaze and folk can all be heard on the record - it’s the pop influences that resonate loudest, with key nods to 60s Motown, New Order, Soul II Soul and Gorillaz.
The High Wire began as a solo vehicle for singer/songwriter Tim Crompton. Soon after the completion of debut album ‘Ahead of the Rain’ in 2008, the line up expanded and now counts west coast Canadian Alexia Hagen and UK native Ross Forrest as core members alongside Crompton. The band released their second album 'The Sleep Tape' in 2010.
Glasgow’s Rustie returns this Summer with second album Green Language, a follow-up to 2011’s highly lauded ‘Glass Swords’.
A development and testament to his true passions and influences, Raptor is a high energy instrumental that showcases Rustie’s signature sound at new found heights.
The album was written and recorded at 4am to the sound of birdsong in a remote location in his native scotland, influenced by nature, birds and sunrise. ‘Green Language’ features Danny Brown, D Double E and Redinho The tracks are expansive and expressive compositions inspired by post-rock bands, such as ‘Godspeed You! Black Emperor’ and ‘My Bloody Valentine’, trance and the Glasgow electronic scene he helped to mould.
The title ‘Green Language’ has different meanings in Norse medieval literature, Renaissance magic and ancient mythology, and many considered it the key to perfect knowledge. For Rustie, it echoes his attitude towards music, too. “It’s a language that’s non-dualistic, that speaks to you directly to your emotions without the mind interfering with the message,” he explains. “And music is like that for me.”
Dutch band “The Morning Hour” has joined White Russian Records for the release of their upcoming 5 track EP “A Stitch In Time”. The EP will be released July 11th on CD and digital format by White Russian Records and is the follow up to the bands 2013 debut two track single “Lectures / Guillotine Guilty”.
A self shot video for the track “Hopes And Dreams” is out now (June 23rd) and clearly shows the bands ability to write beautiful melodic songs, and is a perfect teaser of what’s to come on “A Stitch In Time”.
“Alternating, dreamy and intense”. are the words used by Dutch UPMagazine after seeing The Morning Hour perform live, and are spot on. The four piece alternative band from Rijswijk, a small city near The Hague in The Netherlands, started out in 2013 with a strong drive to play honest heartfelt music without forgetting their punkrock roots.
The band toured on their well received first single for half a year, before deciding to head back to the drawing board and paint a bigger picture. That picture -A Stitch In Time- was painted with the help of Robin van Loenen -front man of Destine, producer of the last album by -now label buddies- The 101’s- and mastered by Jasper van den Broek, known for his recording and mastering jobs for The Lowest Standard, Call It Off and Wasted Bullet.
When asked about his influences when writing music, singer/guitarist Camille simply states “For me the biggest influence would be nature. Sounds weird but I get more inspired by a sunrise on a big open field with some pretty trees than any person or song. We all have a strong affinity with and grew up on punkrock music and many of it’s subgenres.”
A Stitch In Time is that: five songs that contain the beauty of a quiet sunrise in a wide open field filled with beautiful flowers and trees, but at the same time display a daring dark and energetic attitude.
