Chiasm & John Fryer Announce The Release Of Debut Album Missed The Noise

05th of February 2021, 14:17

The Industrial-Electronic Project Of Emileigh Rohn Teams Up With Noted Collaborator John Fryer

(Black Needle Noise & Producer Behind Depeche Mode, NIN).

The anticipated debut album from Chiasm And John Fryer. Called Missed The Noise, the full-length LP will arrive March 5 and includes 11 bold tracks including the previously released singles “Away” and “Are You Okay?”—the latter playing directly into the current landscape amidst COVID-19, racial tensions and economic distress with a poignant “check-in” for listeners, and to let them know they are not alone.

The project of Detroit-based musician Emileigh Rohn, Chiasm has become known for cultivating lush, eclectic, eerily dystopian sonic landscapes with delicately balanced vocals for the past 20-plus years. On this latest release she teams up with collaborator John Fryer, the mastermind behind the project Black Needle Noise and the noted producer who was worked with Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, 4AD, Cocteau Twins and Love and Rockets.

Today, Chiasm And John Fryer also release a new taste of the album with the eerily cinematic track “Intertwined,” which can be heard HERE.

Says Rohn of the album, "Working with John [Fryer] was a completely fresh experience for me that reinvigorated my passion for writing. The opportunity arrived, thanks to COP International, at a time I wasn't sure of my next direction in music at all. I had released my solo album Reset in 2019 and I was ready for a new approach. Creating Missed The Noise was unprecedentedly fast-paced and insightful for me. I became capable of trusting my instincts and pushed my creativity forward without over-questioning. The collaboration felt easy. I loved what John did with each track, and we worked delightfully smoothly together in my experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the process, and am certain it has influenced how I will continue my art forever. I am so thankful."

And Fryer adds, "It was extremely exhilarating working with Emileigh. As soon as I heard the vocals for the first song, everything seemed to click like all of a sudden the stars aligned and off we went on this incredible journey and ending with the wonderfully fantastical album Missed The Noise.

Missed The Noise comes on the heels of a busy 2020 for Chiasm, which saw her release the Away EP in June and the “Are You Okay?” single and remix EP in August, which also featured John Fryer and contributions from label mates Stabbing Westward and Jean-Marc Lederman (Front 242/The Leathermen) as well as Third Realm and Glass Apple Bonzai.

The newest release follows a long line of notable releases from Chiasm (established in 1997), including the 2001 album Disorder with the track “Isolated” that was featured in the television show NCIS as well as in the Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines computer game. Rohn has also collaborated with genre stars Attrition, Carphax Files, Jean-Marc Lederman, Third Realm, :10:, and Acclimate.

All of Rohn’s previous releases had been self-written, programmed, performed and produced in her Michigan studio known as the MausHaus. The music, and the project name (which refers to the optic chiasm, a crossing of optic neurons in the brain that allow people to have continuous and peripheral vision), are in dedication to her full-time career in the field of science.

Missed The Noise track listing:

1. Noise
2. Away
3. Frantic
4. Are You Okay?
5. Intertwined
6. Calling
7. Yours

Plastic Passion | This Day 41 Years Ago, The Cure Release Boys Don’t Cry!

05th of February 2021, 07:00

Today in 1980 The Cure broke through with their second release ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ (05 February 1980).

It also marked the first release by the band into the American market. This album heralded the arrival of The Cure on the international market.

Amid the album's thirteen tracks the collision between the bleak and haunting comes to the surface in the upbeat and beautifully-brilliant title track- 'Boys Don't Cry'. This is pure pop, a departure and surprising instalment in the canon of Cure standards. With infectious guitar lines and Smith's pitiful mourning for the girl that is lost, proving the point there was more to this band than was displayed on their debut.

And then there is the tense-paranoia that translates through the album's lead single, ‘Killing An Arab'. Although predating the album by over a year, the song still has the same impact as it did at its release over forty years ago, still raising the same controversy in the post-9/11 world.

“Standing on a beach with a gun in my hand/Staring at the sea/Staring at the sand/Staring down the barrel at the Arab on the ground.'

Indeed, including ‘Jumping Someone Else’s Train’, all three singles were released before the album. ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ is a solid Post-Punk album, although at times hard to pigeonhole into one particular genre. It is a raw display of melancholic lyrics, submerged in a mesh of catchy melodies that unwillingly plant themselves inside your brain. In reflection ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ mirrors the feeling within the band towards what they saw as the state of the music culture of the time.

Despite their reputation for cavernous gothic misery, ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ presents a lighter and sprightlier take on the punk sound that avoids the political grandstanding of the earlier, angrier-punk bands. The dark edge conveyed by the band runs from the ironic title track to the chorus-heavy album closer- ‘Three Imaginary Boys’, a gothic portrait of solitude put to music.

“See the cracked reflection
Standing still
Before the bedroom mirror
Over my shoulder
But no one's there
Whispers in the silence
Pressing close behind me
Pressing close behind
Can you help me?”

Boys Don't Cry (Original 1980 Track List):
1. 'Jumping Someone Else's Train' – 2:58
2. 'Boys Don't Cry' – 2:37
3. 'Plastic Passion' – 2:15
4. '10:15 Saturday Night' – 3:40
5. 'Accuracy' – 2:16
6. 'Object' – 3:03

31 years ago Nitzer Ebb released Lightningman

05th of February 2021, 07:00

Today, it’s exactly 31 years ago that British EBM/Industrial band Nitzer Ebb released Lightningman (5th February 1990), the preliminary single from their upcoming third album Showtime.

The single stayed in the US Billboard dance charts for 8 weeks and peaked at 14th position on 26th May 1990.

Lightnigman - Lyrics

It seems some story was told
But what is there to tell?
Well, some song had been sung
But none of it sings
So let's spell it out
A, B, and C
Up and down from A is to Z
You meant zed, you said zed

From nothing to something
And something for nothing
From no one to someone
From someone to same one
Same old thing
The only way out
Leads to no way back
What can you do?

Easy
You shove it back where it came
Easy
You never let yourself down

So you got up
And you ran
And you run to get up
Through Chinatowns
To slip right down
Soho's a town in every downtown

Cat Rapes Dog releases 'gems from the attick'

04th of February 2021, 17:15

Cat Rapes Dog-members have found a cassette tape with unreleased material from the period after Joel but before John, which means 1995-1996. They are demo recordings made on a four-track, so the quality is not 100%. Some songs have titles and lyrics (and samples) that were later re-used for the following two albums, but the music is different. As they had no lead singer, all vocals are by Magnus and Annelie. The nine songs are now ready to be released on bandcamp under the title ”Holiday In The Welfare State”. If anything, they are likely the most sample-dense songs the band has ever made.

The release went online Sunday January 17th.

TOO DEAD TOO DIE Release New Video: 'They Were All Wrong' taken from the Album 'Tropical Gothic'

04th of February 2021, 11:15

One man, one vision. Many years after the debut "Murder On The Dancefloor" Too Dead To Die returned with a new album „Tropical Gothic" to unify the traits of the acclaimed debut with the new way of expression with a Caribbean flair to the classic Too Dead To Die sound.

"This song about being focused on your journey. ppl used to tell - impossible, never, stupid. But they do that just bc they gave up, bc of their own sad experience. so even if you're alone, even if you're against everyone - that's fine. Go ahead and prove them - they are wrong about you, about your way.

And don't forget to have fun," says the mastermind of Too Dead To Die, who recorded this song with the Russian project FREAKY MIND, it was their first collaboration ever.

"turn it all into fun

life's not that long

watch them all one by one

frozen in moan

they all were wrong"

The Too Dead To Die leader states further about the creation of the music video, that when he moved to LA one year ago, "this place has incredible energy. so many ppl come here for their dreams in art and cinema. I wanted to use this idea and aesthetic."
