Arrow releases White Of The Eye

07th of March 2014, 18:15

Arrow Video is excited to announce the UK Dual Format Blu-ray + DVD and Steelbook release of the 1987 British thriller, White of the Eye, which will be making its worldwide Blu-ray debut, and UK DVD debut from 31st March 2014. Described by the distinguished critic David Thomson as “one of the great secret works in cinema”, White of the Eye is one of the most bizarre and unforgettable thrillers ever made.

Following on from their work on Zombie Flesh Eaters, Time Bandits, The Fury and Cinema Paradiso, White of the Eye joins a prestigious line of Arrow Video titles whereby the restoration has been taken directly from the original camera negative, all of which were created by James White at Deluxe. The release will represent the first time the film will be released on Blu-ray in the UK, features packaging that showcases a newly commissioned artwork by Nathanael Marsh.

Arrow Video’s Francesco Simeoni said: "Donald Cammell was such an unfortunate filmmaker, side-lined by critics who thought Nicolas Roeg was the creative force behind Performance, projects which would never come to fruition, studio interference and personal problems, his life was arguably more famous than his films. White of the Eye is possibly his most problem free film, though even this film suffered cuts, which we have included, although sadly no sound could be found. Though the film was cut, Cammell never commented, at least publicly, about his dissatisfaction with this decision by distributor Cannon. With a gorgeous new restoration of the negative and a bevy of supplements including a documentary on Cammell by Oscar winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald and Chris Rodley, an audio commentary by Cammell's biographer Sam Umland, Cammell's short film The Argument, a comprehensive booklet and more, we are very proud to make this sensational film available to the UK once again.”

Featuring a bumper crop of bonus features such as documentary 'Donald Cammell: The Ultimate Performance' (1998), Donald Cammell’s short film, The Argument, an audio commentary by Donald Cammell's biographer Sam Umland, deleted scenes, original opening credits and the theatrical trailer.

Synopsis

A serial killer is on the loose in and around the small community of Globe, Arizona, and housewife Joan White (Cathy Moriarty) gradually comes to suspect that her opera-loving hi-fi engineer husband Paul (David Keith) might know more than he’s letting on…

So far so familiar, but in the hands of British visionary Donald Cammell (who wrote and co-directed Performance with Nicolas Roeg), the film becomes a dazzling kaleidoscope of images and ideas, spanning everything from Apache folklore, desert landscapes and stylish murder set-pieces that recall Dario Argento to a painfully vivid dissection of the emotional fissures undermining a modern marriage. It’s all set to an equally eclectic score co-written by Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason.

New album from Lydia Lunch

07th of March 2014, 18:07

Lydia Lunch has spent decades trolling through the subterranean sick-home black and blues creating a musical legacy that started burning down the house in 1977 with Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, and continues to this day. From No Wave teen terror to Muse of the Cinema of Transgression, whether as hardcore spoken word harbinger or chanteuse provocateur she has relentlessly sought new collaborators with whom to dissect passion, obsession and desire.

Cypress Grove is a acoustic blues guitarist who has collaborated with Nick cave, Mark Lanegan, Debbie Harry, Steve Wynn. A Fistful of Desert Blues is a bittersweet symphony of black and acoustic love songs. As beautiful and heartbreaking as 12 wayward orphans who wandered in from the badlands searching for a home away from home, this collection showcases the ever-evolving gypsy shape-shifter and her fellow musical vagabond as sonic caretakers offering comfort to those crushed by a love which bruises.

A Fistful of Desert Blues is the bastard love child of two musical outlaws who were thrown together by mysterious circumstances at a friend’s funeral. For Sure One of the Best Albums from Lydia Lunch. Intense.

New album by Inkubus Sukkubus

06th of March 2014, 17:02

Musically the band has always been a unique fusion of Folk, Metal and Gothic Rock, although the band had also taken inspiration from a myriad of influence, such as the music of Mexico and the Middle East.

As with most bands, the journey for Inkubus Sukkubus did not begin very easily. After an initial period of a few months songwriting, the band managed to enlist the help of Bob Gardener as the band’s drummer; this was followed by a series of live performances in the band’s home town. Later in 1990 Inkubus Sukkubus recorded their first release, the single “Beltaine”, however various pressing problems ensured that the single was never properly released, and this led to the band splitting up, with Tony and Candia forming a new band called “Children of the Moon”.

During the Children of the Moon phase, the band recorded two tape albums and sold them by post, using the underground Pagan zine network. At this point the band was using a drum machine and midi sequencers along with electric guitars.

By the end of 1991 Children of the Moon had a growing underground following and began to get radio airplay. Inkubus Sukkubus were reformed by the beginning of 1992 and the material recorded under Children of the Moon was re-released as Inkubus Sukkubus, as the cassette mail order album Beltaine. It was to take another year before the band were approached by Nightbreed Records, with the offer of a recording contract. During the spring of 1993 the band’s first CD album “Belladonna & Aconite” was released and the band began to perform all over the UK. By the summer the band had signed to Pagan Media Records, and were recording a new album, “WYTCHES”.

The album WYTCHES was released in the spring of 1994, although the band and Pagan Media Records parted company later that year. The band then signed to the newly formed “Resurrection Records” with whom the band are still signed. Over the following twenty years Inkubus Sukkubus have released 15 albums, (including re-releases of their first 3 albums) with Resurrection Records, and 2 Anthology albums with Cleopatra, USA. They have also played countless live shows across the UK, Europe, the USA, Mexico, Australia and Russia. They have appeared on national TV in several countries and have managed to maintain a large and loyal following. Despite the current global economic recession, Inkubus Sukkubus are still recording and releasing albums. They have also been able to remain true to the original concept of the band.

In 2014 the band are releasing their 18th album, entitled “Love Poltergeist”; the name of the album was conceived by Candia and Tony’s daughter Carmen. The album consists of yet more new material and demonstrates that even in their 25th year Inkubus Sukkubus show no signs of slowing down.

IAMX feels quite delicate to me. It needs understanding and effort to really see the bigger picture. The live show can do that, it can convince people, but from my internal feeling, it can be uncomfortable.
