"Happy people have no stories"…

NEWS Flicker Alley releases The House Of Mystery

Flicker Alley releases The House Of Mystery

31st of January 2015, 10:43

Serial films, or ciné romans were well-established in France before World War I, where they are most closely identified with writer-director Louis Feuillade. At Albatros, Russian émigré producer Joseph Ermolieff produced three serials in 1921, all adapted from roman-feuilletons by the phenomenally successful Jules Mary. The first two serials have not left a trace in the annals of film archives. But The House of Mystery (La Maison du mystère), Ermolieff's third serial, (begun in the summer of 1921 and not completed until 1923) by Alexandre Volkoff (with fellow studio director Viatcheslav Tourjansky providing some important and uncredited second-unit work), is a triumph of the genre and a complete delight that not only survived, but also was restored in its original ten-episode format by the Cinematheque Francaise. Flicker Alley and the Blackhawk Films® Collection

are proud to present the DVD premiere of this grand, cinematic masterwork, with optional English subtitles by film historian Lenny Borger and a brand-new score by composer Neil Brand.

The involved plot of La Maison du mystère centers around Julien Villandrit (Ivan Mosjoukine) and his star-crossed courtship to Régine de Bettigny (Hélène Darly), that inspires bitterness and jealousy in Henri Corradin (Charles Vanel), Julien's long-time associate and secret rival in love. For Mosjoukine, who contracted typhoid fever during the course of production, it remains one of the ultimate consecrations to his multifarious talents.

Included in this edition are a bonus slideshow featuring rare production stills and behind-the-scenes photos, as well as an essay and biographical material on some of the actors and artists by film historian Lenny Borger.

About the Blackhawk Film® Collection

Blackhawk Films® was founded in 1927 as a producer of film advertising for merchants and as a distributor of regional newsreels. The company made its mark as a nontheatrical distributor with the advent of 16mm sound film in 1933, establishing several regional offices before WWII. In 1947, Blackhawk expanded into sales of used film and soon thereafter began distributing new 8mm and 16mm prints of Laurel & Hardy comedies from Hal Roach Studios as well as titles from such other suppliers such as Fox Movietone, Killiam Shows, and National Telefilm Associates. David Shepard joined Blackhawk as Vice President (1973-1976) and after founding Film Preservation Associates in 1986, acquired the Blackhawk Films® library which now comprises some 5,000 titles.

The Comedy of Terrors - on Blu-ray & DVD 16th Feb 2015

31st of January 2015, 10:37

Arrow Video is delighted to announce the latest addition to its roster of Vincent Price movies with the UK Blu-ray and DVD release of Jacques Tourneur’s The Comedy of Terrors. The 1963 horror-comedy classic, featuring an all-star ensemble cast including genre greats Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff and Basil Rathbone, will arrive on Blu-ray and DVD on 16th February 2015.

The Comedy of Terrors is the latest Vincent Price title released by Arrow Video, joining previous releases such as The Fall of the House of Usher, Theatre of Blood, The Pit of the Pendulum and The Raven amongst others.

This new edition boasts a bumper crop of bonus features such as an hour long archive interview with Vincent Price in which the actor reflects on his career and an audio commentary with historian David Del Valle.

Alongside this the special features will also include Whispering in Distant Chambers: The Nightfall of Jacques Tourneur, a specially-commissioned video essay by David Cairns, which charts the career of director Jacques Tourneur, alongside Richard Matheson Storyteller, an archive featurette on The Comedy of Terrors writer.

The release features a collector’s booklet featuring a reversible sleeve showcasing original and newly commissioned artwork by Paul Shipper and a collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Chris Fujiwara, author of Jacques Tourneur: The Cinema of Nightfall, illustrated with original archive stills and posters.

Synopsis

From Jacques Tourneur, director of numerous horror classics including Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie and Night of the Demon, comes The Comedy of Terrors – a gleefully macabre tale which brings together genre greats Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff.

Price plays Waldo Trumbull, a perpetually inebriated, down-on-his-luck undertaker who has struck on an interesting way to boost business – by hastening the deaths of those whom he buries. When landlord Mr. Black (Basil Rathbone) threatens to put him out on the street for falling behind with the rent, Trumbull, together with his reluctant and bumbling assistant Felix Gillie (Lorre), hatches an ill-advised plan to “kill two birds with one stone”, so to speak…

The penultimate directorial effort from Tourneur, The Comedy of Terrors bears many of the hallmarks of the master filmmaker’s earlier works, whilst adding a healthy dash of humour to the proceedings. Careful – you might just die laughing!

· High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentation of the feature, transferred from original film elements by MGM

Freakangel project Suicidal Romance returns with 'best of' including bonus tracks!

31st of January 2015, 10:34

Alfa Matrix fans and followers all know very well our favourite Estonian artist Dmitry Darling, the frontman of FREAKANGEL fame... Well, our talented bad boy is also the mastermind behind the band SUICIDAL ROMANCE, a project that he started back in 2006 with female vocalist Viktoria Seimar. They managed to establish themselves within the alternative darkwave / electro scene through numerous live performances across Europe and by releasing three albums (“Love Beyond Reach”, “Shattered Heart Reflections” and “Memories Behind Closed Curtains”) and also several EPs (“A Kiss To Resist”, “Whisper Goodbye” and “Burning Love / Remember Me”) on various labels in Russia, Germany and the USA.

While D. Darling is currently preparing the much anticipated return of SUICIDAL ROMANCE in studio, as well as putting the finishing touches on a few more surprise releases through Alfa Matrix, we could not resist sharing with you as perfect appetizer for all that will soon follow, some 15 selected moments from their rich and diverse repertoire and plunge you once again into SUICIDAL ROMANCE's unique dreamy atmospheres and upbeat darker moments... what could be considered a "best-of" collection aptly titles "Rêves & Souvenirs" on which angel and devil marry their vocal talents for a unique blend of catchy melodic tunes and noir elektro synth arrangements with an edge.

You will also enjoy the classic BLUTENGEL remix of "Not Alone", the stunning guest vocals of Felix Marc (DIORAMA, FROZEN PLASMA) on the catchy "Ecstatic", the exclusive bonus remix of "Touch" by ES23 as well as a cover version of "Remember Me" by the band EMPHASIS with fully rerecorded male vocals by D. Darling for the occasion of this unreleased version...

All songs featured on "Rêves & Souvenirs" were initially mixed by Jan L. from NOISUF-X / X-FUSION or by Vasi Vallis (FROZEN PLASMA, REAPER, etc.) and were now remastered by Pavel Korotajev at Stone Oil Studio, while the design was inked by Tomoki Haysaka of Sheerheart in Japan.

Strongly recommended to fans of bands in the likes of BLUTENGEL, DIORAMA, FROZEN PLASMA, CHANDEEN, L'AME IMMORTELLE, IN STRICT CONFIDENCE, TECHNOIR, etc.
