Legowelt scores 'Aguirre, Der Zorn Gottes' (Filmfestival Gent)

03rd of September 2014, 17:10

Danny Wolfers aka Legowelt, composed a new soundtrack for Werner Herzog's 'Aguirre, The Wrath of God' at the invitation of Film Fest Gent, Vooruit and art collective Stroom.

Once described as an extremely intense and colorful living painting, this film tells the story of an obsessed and insane quest for the secret golden city of El Dorado through the inhospitable jungles of the Amazon rainforest.

Danny Wolfers is a Dutch electronic producer and DJ who beame world famous under the name Legowelt. He made a shortened, more visually oriented version of the film and provides the soundtrack with live synthesizers. Partly inspired by the original enchanting soundtrack by the German krautrock band Popol Vuh and the insane and legendary protagonist Klaus Kinski. This screening takes place in the Theaterzaal of Vooruit.

AFTERPARTY

There's an afterparty after the film in the Ballroom of Vooruit with a DJ set by Legowelt himself and also sets by Chris Ferreira and DJ Nosedrip.

NEWS Dirk Serries has some news for you.

Dirk Serries has some news for you.

03rd of September 2014, 17:07

Apart from all collaborative projects, Dirk Serries is diving full head into ambient bliss again, re-instating his classic vidnaObmana ambience.

He returns to Projekt Records with The Origin Reversal, a re-boot of his classic vidnaObmana sound. This is ambient music that flows from its discreet origins: sonic purity, washes of harmony, and organic textures which slow time to a phase of transcendence.

Picking up on the 1988 - 1996 vidnaObmana ambient period (mostly released on Projekt), The Origin Reversal's six tracks are informed with a subtlety that only comes from Serries' decades of musical growth exploring his craft. After the understated, meditative 2012 collaboration with Steve Roach, Low Volume Music, Serries reestablished himself as the ambient artist known worldwide for minimal, warm and introspective sonic atmospheres. Performed in real-time directly to a stereo 2-track, Serries created these six tracks armed only with a Gibson Les Paul custom guitar and a few pedals. Despite the use of different tools from his electronic heritage,The Origin Reversal shows a refinement and maturity achieved through extensive touring, intriguing side-projects, recordings and collaborations.

The Belgium-based Serries has experimented with ambient music for over 30 years. His earliest work came out under the vidnaObmana pseudonym, until he closed the book on that project in 2007. In the ensuing seven years, he released over twenty albums under various monikers before returning to a refined stream of ambient works. October 2013 saw three solo albums on limited edition 180-gram vinyl. Unedited live performances meant to run the length of a side of a vinyl record, they were published on the boutique Tonefloat:Ikon imprint. These three LPs were followed by a few digital-only albums.

The hypnotic nature of Serries’ music comes with time and restrained anticipation. It’s all about a delicate touch that never disturbs the continuum between sound and silence.

NEWS New Order sign with Mute

New Order sign with Mute

03rd of September 2014, 17:05

New Order are very pleased to announce they have signed a worldwide deal with Mute, and that their next release will be on the legendary independent label.

Speaking about the signing Daniel Miller explains: “This is an exciting new chapter for both Mute and New Order and I feel privileged to be working with artists with such a long, creative and successful history. When the possibility of us working together first came up, I was invited to hear some of the new material and immediately had no doubts whatsoever that Mute would be the right home for New Order. We've already had a number of creative conversations, and I am looking towards an exciting future”.

New Order are similarly thrilled with their new home "New Order are delighted to be signing to Mute. We couldn't imagine a better place to be than working with Daniel Miller and his team. Mute has a superb roster of artists and a history that complements our own. In many ways joining the label feels like we are coming home, returning to our independent roots."

Forming in 1980 out of the ashes of Manchester band Joy Division, New Order have released a total of nine studio and two live albums, starting with their debut single ‘Ceremony’ on Factory Records in 1981. Thus starting a career as iconic as it has been influential.

2014 has seen the band play for the Tibet House charity at New York’s Carnegie Hall, curated by Philip Glass. They performed Joy Division classics, ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ and ‘Transmission’ with Iggy Pop, alongside never played live New Order track ‘Californian Grass’ from their 2013 release Lost Sirens.

They toured South America in April 2014, playing at Lollapolooza, then headed to the US for a hugely well received run of dates, airing several new tracks to rapturous reception. New Order will soon return to the studio to continue working on new material.

Founded in 1978 by Daniel Miller, Mute has signed and developed an amazing array of innovative artists, including Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Depeche Mode, Plastikman and Moby. The current roster includes Goldfrapp, Erasure, Plastikman, Liars, Can and Cabaret Voltaire, alongside newer signings such as Zola Jesus, Swans, Ben Frost, Big Deal, Land Observations, Cold Specks, Diamond Version and Maps.

BRUTE FORCE - Blu-ray & DVD Combo, 15th September 2014

02nd of September 2014, 18:41

Arrow Films’ Arrow Academy label is proud to announce the release of the American epic Brute Force, on dual-format Blu-ray and DVD on 15th September.

Bursting onto American screens in the summer of 1947, Brute Force’s incendiary cocktail of sensation, sweat and sadism excited heated debates among reviewers, as well as attracting eager audiences whose appetite for violent spectacle had clearly not been sated by the war. Following up from the immensely successful release of The Killers (1946), producer Mark Hellinger re-enlisted his newest Hollywood star Burt Lancaster to star in this dark prison film, and it went on to break box-office records in New York, Los Angeles, and several more cities in its seven-week run.

Boasting an unmatchable team, Brute Force features a screenplay by the acclaimed novelist/writer/director Richard Brooks (Blackboard Jungle, 1955); cinematography by William H. Daniel (Greta Garbo’s lensman of choice), Hungarian composer Miklós Rózsa and most importantly, the incomparable director Jules Dassin, legend of film noir.

This deluxe edition will include an all-new high definition transfer of the film, alongside a new and exhaustive look at Burt Lancaster's early career by Kate Buford, author of Burt Lancaster: An American Life. The discs will also feature the theatrical trailer, stills gallery and a reversible sleeve featuring the original poster and newly commissioned artwork by Reinhard Kleist. The accompanying collector’s booklet will contain new writing on the film by Frank Krutnik, author of In a Lonely Street: Film Noir, Genre, Masculinity, and Swell Guy, an obituary of Brute Force’s producer, Mark Hellinger, by its screenwriter, Richard Brooks, illustrated with original stills.

Synopsis

Before making the French crime classic Rififi, Jules Dassin was arguably the greatest of film noir directors, responsible for a string of gems including The Naked City, Thieves’ Highway and Night and the City. Brute Force kickstarted that run of pictures and never did a film live up to its name more.

Burt Lancaster is Joe Collins, one of a number of convicts squeezed into cell R17 intent on staging a prison break. Not only does he need to return to the side of his cancer-ridden wife (Ann Blyth), he also wants to escape the clutches of sadistic warden Captain Munsey (an unforgettable performance from Hume Cronyn) who enjoys a reign of terror over the inmates.

Beautifully shot by the great William H. Daniels, tautly written by Richard Brooks (Blackboard Jungle, In Cold Blood) and impeccably acted by its ensemble of noir familiars, Brute Force remains a prison movie classic.

This deluxe package will be full of special features and bonus material including:

· New High Definition digital transfer of the film

· High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentation

· Original mono 1.0 audio (uncompressed PCM on the Blu-ray)

· Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hearing impaired

· Burt Lancaster: The Film Noir Years – an in-depth look at the actor’s early career by Kate Buford, author of Burt Lancaster: An American Life

· Theatrical trailer

· Stills gallery

· Reversible sleeve featuring the original poster and newly commissioned artwork by Reinhard Kleist

· Collector’s booklet containing new writing on the film by Frank Krutnik, author of In a Lonely Street: Film Noir, Genre, Masculinity, and Swell Guy, an obituary of Brute Force’s producer, Mark Hellinger, by its screenwriter, Richard Brooks, illustrated with original stills

NEWS The new album from The Birthday Massacre is out now!

The new album from The Birthday Massacre is out now!

02nd of September 2014, 18:39

Metropolis Records is proud to present Superstition, the new album from The Birthday Massacre. The album is everything that you would expect of The Birthday Massacre, and so much more. As the band gets further along on its artistic journey, they are putting a fine point on all of the unique qualities that we have all come to expect from The Birthday Massacre.

The band has progressed and matured, developing its musical style into a finely honed signature sound. Superstition is elements of band’s entire career up until this point, from the sounds of Nothing and Nowhere, Violet, all the way through to Hide and Seek fully realized. The album feels cinematic in approach, with the first trio of songs, Divide, Diaries, and the title track seeming to set the thematic scene before Destroyer, with it’s driving rhythms burns it all down. In the wake of all of this, Surrender gives the listener a brief moment of quiet, just breaths in the silence, before launching into perhaps one of the album’s most personal sounding, intimate tracks. Chibi’s vocals have always been an instrument integral to the sound of The Birthday Massacre, but never has it been more apparent than in Surrender.

As she seems to invite you further into their world the bouncing, uptempo, Oceana and the dramatic Rain highlight all the elements of what make The Birthday Massacre such a unique band. Rainbow and Falcore’s songwriting are in top form, as the duo uses the band’s signature elements to masterfully create emotional gravity within the songs. This is especially evident in Beyond, as the heavy guitar work and solos interplay with the lighter atmospherics of the keyboards and electronic elements, as well as in The Other Side, as the bass guitar and crunching drop-tuned guitars shine. All in all, Superstition is the finest album The Birthday Massacre has recorded to date.
