Black symphonies from Blutengel

04th of March 2014, 17:26

An exquisite selection of Blutengel hits and classics, reinterpreted in symphonic form, makes for the most intense and grandiose sonic experience that the Berlin-based charts-stormers have ever delivered. Available as a regular album CD, as a deluxe edition with a bonus live-DVD containing the best moments from the Gothic-Meets-Klassik-show in Leipzig and as a strictly limited fan box.

The highly acclaimed concert Blutengel played with a symphony orchestra in front of a sold-out "Neues Gewandhaus Leipzig" at the first Gothic Meets Klassik Festival seemed like a revelation to all people involved. Carefully rearranged and carried by the massive sound of a full orchestra, the Berlin-based group’s songs unfolded a completely new dimension of impact that left no one cold and had even long-time fans discover the music from a brand-new perspective. Band-mastermind and singer Chris Pohl and second vocalist Ulrike Goldmann were so mesmerized by the experience that they decided it would be a waste to let this project just be a one-time event.

At the end of 2013, they had the songs rearranged and organized a tour featuring a carefully toned down version of the experience with a chamber ensemble. As a logical next step, the band now presents the full symphonic experience as a gigantic studio production that reproduces the sound of a full orchestra in a crystal-clear audio experience on the new album “Black Symphonies.” The 12 songs on the album span an exquisite selection of the finest Blutengel-classics and hits, complemented by the epic new song “Krieger.”

The album will also be released as a deluxe version featuring a bonus live DVD containing the best moments from the legendary show with the symphony orchestra of Zielona Gora at the "Neues Gewandhaus Leipzig", which started it all.

For real diehard fans, “Black Symphonies” is also released as a deluxe set in a lavish black wooden box with gold print which contains the deluxe CD/DVD version of the album, plus the exclusive CD-single “Krieger”, an exclusive “Black Symphonies” T-shirt and a “Black Symphonies” candle cover starter set with a red candle. As a special exclusive collector’s item, the box also contains a hand numbered replica page from the original score for “Reich mir die Hand”, hand-signed by Chris Pohl and Ulrike Goldmann. “Black Symphonies” is the irresistible opportunity to discover the world’s most successful Gothic-Pop band from a completely new perspective. From intense cinematic grandeur to the intimate, quiet moments …prepare to be captivated by this amazing sonic experience!

Eno is back

28th of February 2014, 19:45

Brian Eno and Karl Hyde come together with a new album to be released this May on Warp Records. ‘Someday World’ comprises nine songs, composed and sung by Eno & Hyde together with a highly distinguished cast of supporting musicians, including Tessa Angus, Nell Catchpole, Marianna Champion, Will Champion, Kasia Daszykowska, Don E., Darla Eno, Georgia Gibson, Andy Mackay, John Reynolds and Chris Vatalaro.

The release was produced by Brian Eno with 22 year old Fred Gibson, continuing an ongoing collaboration between Karl and Brian which sees the two together on a complete album for the very first time.

“A lot of the nicer cities I know are cities built on hills, and the cities are beautiful because the buildings have a challenge to adapt to. They have to mould themselves around the geology that they've formed upon. And that always makes for very interesting buildings, because they can't just be blocks, they have to somehow morph around the environment. A lot of the constructions on the album were deliberately irregular and awkward.

I had a big collection of 'beginnings' sitting around waiting for something to galvanise them into life, to make them more than just 'experiments'. That something turned out to be Karl Hyde.”

- Brian Eno

“It's a bit like being nine years old again. You have no idea what you've just been given, the record button has been pressed and you're on. And then these unlikely patterns start to happen. The biggest surprise was discovering we both had a love of Afrobeat, Cyclical music based in live playing. When Brian played me these early tracks it was, 'Oh my god, this is home! Can I borrow a guitar?”

- Karl Hyde

‘Someday World’ is released on Special Edition 2CD (with four bonus songs), CD, Double Gatefold LP and Digital formats.

Portion Control is a British electronic and industrial band from South London. The band calls its music style electropunk or hard rhythmic electronics. They have been name checked by Depeche Mode, Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Orbital, The Prodigy, and others and copied by many other artists.

Portion Control first formed in 1980 and the original incarnation of the group existed until 1987. They released a variety of seminal recordings on a variety of indie labels, some self-produced but mainly on Illuminated Records, as well as Rhythmic Records and Dead Man's Curve. In 1984 the band supported Depeche Mode on their UK and European tour. In early 1987 Portion Control joined the management roster of Tom Watkins and signed a record deal with London Records and promptly vanished. They reformed a few years later as Solar Enemy which survived from 1990 to 1993. Portion Control weren't seen again until 2002 when fansite 319 Online announced a resumption of activities by the band resulting not long after in a free downloadable software demo featuring graphics, a rare remix of an old track, and samples of new material. Nothing else was released by them, however, until early 2004 with the release of the critically acclaimed double album Wellcome (the title inspired by the work of Sir Henry Wellcome). Since then Portion Control have been active with concert and festival appearances as well as multiple releases on a variety of formats.

NUMB is the brainchild of Don Gordon after his previous musical adventures in Pin-ups, Images In... Vogue (also starring drummer Kevin Crompton a.k.a. Skinny Puppy's cEvin Key) and Proof By Nine. Co-founded with Sean Stubbs and David Hall the band started in 1986 as an art project designed to address issues of social desensitization, releasing their first limited edition cassette “Blue Light” in 1987.

Their debut selftitled LP came out the same year , a terrifying assortment of emotional assaults: confusion, anger, and alienation taking musical forms and ravaging the senses.

Sean Stubbs/Sean St. Hubbs was the first lead vocalist for NUMB, during the 90's he played drums on several subsequent tours in Europe and the U.S.

Christmeister, released in 1989, took a much more aggressive stance than their debut. With their electronic approach being augmented by aggressive guitars and lyrics spewed forth in a torrent of tuneful howls from madman Blair Dobson ripped apart the emotional stability of its listeners.

In 1993, NUMB's third CD, “Death On The Installment Plan” was released upon the unsuspecting public. This album was described as a "high-intensity blast of near madness" with guitars, synthetics and vocals by Conan Hunter working in a near-perfect collusion.

The following year, NUMB's mini-CD “Fixate” was released, including remixes from Death On The Installment Plan and several live tracks. 1994 also saw the release of “Wasted Sky”, a post-apocalyptic vision of technology as religion, of truth as virtual reality.

After Wasted Sky, Don Gordon added The Fourth Man David Collings to its ranks, and had the opportunity to hone their skills on the road. Koro is a documentation of the band's live power, recorded in Japan in 1995.

The band released “Blood Meridian” in late 1997: a collection of primal dance fury, pure electronics sans guitar, electronica with attitude; and followed it up the following year with “Language Of Silence”, a CD guaranteed to fill dance floors with new and old fans, all the while keeping the mediocrity of mainstream techno at bay with its uncompromising harshness and brilliant arrangements. A mini-CD with 5 remixes of the track Suspended followed.

Don Gordon did some remixes for a.o. Dive, Esplendor Geométrico and The Klinik; took care of the production for some Lung releases (two 7" singles and the cassette/CD release Magnium Opiate) and composed scores for two short films: A Dream Of Naming (a German-Canadian co-production) and Six Hundred Million Breaths (a Canadian independent short). Soundtracks were completed for the play Photographic Memories which premiered at the Vancouver New Play Festival and for the performance piece, Blood Of The Lambs structured loosely upon the traditional requiem which was presented with Madeleine Morris at the Vancouver Fringe Festival. In 2000 Don put Numb on non-active and moved to Vietnam.
