MIREXXX

Mirexxx will perform for the third time at a Dark Entries Night, our free concert series in Ghent’s Kinky Star, on Saturday 8 March. That’s because we were able to program the Spanish dark electro act Larva, and we can’t think of a better support act than Mirexxx, who have been making dance floors in Belgium shake for a long time now. We asked frontman Stijn Szin a few questions in the run-up to the performance.

On Saturday March 8th you will perform with Mirexxx for the third time at a Dark Entries Night. There is a reason for that, since you will be playing with the Spanish dark electro project Larva. May I know where that good relationship with Larva comes from?

I like the sound of Larva, and frontman InQuesT is just very open-minded. And of course we also like Dark Entries and the Dark Entries Nights.

Racso Agroyam, world-famous from Hocico, did the mastering of your latest release, ‘Addiction’, of which a new video was released last year, in 2024. What can you tell us about ‘Addiction’ and its video?

‘Addiction’ is about a goth fetish model who wants to make it as a professional model. She stays positive in a dark time. There is a line in the song about ‘missiles and wars we face’, because at the same time the war between Russia and Ukraine starts. War can also be an addiction for some people. ‘Addiction’ is about the rebellion against world destruction. A lot of people die because some world leaders are addicted to power and start wars. That is the main theme of ‘Addiction’.

Let’s go back to the beginning of Mirexxx. How and when did the project come into being?

I started out in a punk band called Defy. I was the singer. My mate Posse was a PA operator at metal concerts at the time. We started experimenting with synthesizers, drum beats and effects together. After several electro projects, Posse and I founded Mirexxx. It started in 2007, and we still look at things the same way. We only have to look at the world around us to see the confusion, the hatred, the division, the lack of wisdom, the stupidity. What is the source of all this negative energy that prevents people from understanding genuine knowledge? Mirexxx counteracts this negativity.

In 2008 ‘Erratica’ was released, a cd-r with seven tracks. What was the importance of this release?

The demo-CD ‘Erratica’ was our first album. It was a transitional phase for me between punk and electronic music or electro. In that sense it was very important for me, yes. I still miss the time of my punk band Defy.

In 2011 the successor ‘Nine angles’ was released. The record was well received and confirmed Mirexxx as an important band in the Belgian electronic scene. What can you tell about this record?

With ‘Nine Angles’ we could create a better sound. It was the period after I moved to Brussels, around 2009/2010. I became more creative. ‘Nine Angles’ deals with subjects like sin, fetishism, death, pleasure, pain… That record saved me a bit. It was the basis for what would come later.

It was not until 2018 that ‘Vault’ was released, this time on the German label Echozone. This was an important release for you, or not?

Absolutely. ‘Vault’ was actually our debut album, and it was released on the German label Echozone, as you said. The single ‘Inside You’, which preceded the album, is about introspection, about looking inside yourself, rather than looking for answers outside yourself. In that way, ‘Inside You’ leads to ‘Vault’, a place where you will only find emptiness, to resource yourself. It is the place where you can find your ‘true self’.

In these days, we are going through dark ages, and most people underestimate the importance of spirituality in life. There is not much time left for humanity to grasp this. In the pan-Indian tradition, this period of decadence and decline that the world is in at this moment, has long been foreseen, and is known as the 'Kali Yuga', which in Sanskrit means the unlucky age or the black age. It is the cycle when creation and sustenance turn into destruction.

Blood is a recurring motif in your lyrics. If I’m not mistaken, the sample at the beginning of ‘Bleeding Sky’ comes from the movie 'Blade'. What inspires you in this subject?

Blood refers to the color red. In ancient Egypt, the color red represented anger, chaos, and fire, and was closely associated with the Egyptian god of deserts, chaos, and violence, Seth. Red could also represent life.

You’re right about that sample. It’s from ‘Blade’, a movie that says ‘wake up, there's another world beneath it’. I believe in a different view of reality. Only through spiritual attainment can we see through the delusion of conventional reality.

As mentioned, ‘Vault’ dates back to 2018. Are you working on a new album? If so, when can we expect it?

There are musicians who talk about their new material in advance, but we don't. Maybe I'll come up with a side project first. Who knows?

Mirexxx treedt op zaterdag 8 maart voor de derde keer op op een Dark Entries Night, onze gratis concertreeks in de Gentse Kinky Star. Dat komt omdat we de Spaanse darkelectroact Larva konden strikken, en we ons geen beter voorprogramma kunnen inbeelden dan Mirexxx, die intussen al lange tijd de dansvloeren doen beuken in België. We legden frontman Stijn Szin een paar vragen voor in de aanloop naar het optreden.

Op zaterdag 8 maart treed je met Mirexxx voor de derde keer op op een Dark Entries Night. Dat heeft een reden, want je speelt er met de Spaanse darkelectrogroep Larva. Mag ik weten vanwaar die goede relatie met Larva komt?

Ik hou van het geluid van Larva, en InQuesT is heel open van geest. En natuurlijk houden wij ook van Dark Entries en van de Dark Entries Nights.

Er is een zin in het lied over ‘missiles and wars we face’, want op hetzelfde moment start de oorlog tussen Rusland en Oekraïne. Oorlog kan ook een verslaving zijn voor sommige mensen. ‘Addiction’ gaat over de opstand tegen de vernietiging van de wereld. Een hoop mensen sterven omdat sommige wereldleiders verslaafd zijn aan macht en oorlogen starten. Dat is het belangrijkste thema van ‘Addiction’.

Laten we teruggaan naar het begin van Mirexxx. Hoe en wanneer is het project ontstaan?

Ik begon in een punkband die Defy heette. Ik was de zanger. Mijn vriend Posse bediende toen de PA op metaloptredens. We begonnen samen te experimenteren met synthesizers, drumbeats en effecten. Na verschillende electroprojecten heb ik samen met Posse Mirexxx opgericht. De start was in 2007, en we kijken nog steeds op dezelfde manier naar de dingen. We hoeven maar naar de wereld rondom ons te kijken om de verwarring te zien, de haat, de verdeeldheid, het gebrek aan wijsheid, de dwaasheid. Wat is de oorzaak van al die negatieve energie die mensen verhindert om ware kennis te vergaren? Mirexxx gaat in tegen deze negativiteit.

In 2008 verscheen ‘Erratica’, een cd-r met zeven nummers. Wat was het belang van deze uitgave?

In 2011 verscheen dan de opvolger ‘Nine angles’. De plaat werd goed ontvangen en bevestigde Mirexxx als een belangrijke groep in de Belgische elektronische scene. Wat kun je over deze plaat vertellen?

Met ‘Nine Angles’ konden we een beter geluid creëren. Het was de periode nadat ik naar Brussel verhuisd was, rond 2009/2010. Ik werd creatiever. ‘Nine Angles’ behandelt onderwerpen als zonde, fetisjisme, dood, plezier, pijn … Die plaat heeft me een beetje gered. Het was de basis voor wat later zou komen.

Het was tot 2018 wachten op ‘Vault’, dat deze keer op het Duitse label Echozone verscheen. Dit was een belangrijke uitgave voor jullie, of niet?

Absoluut. ‘Vault’ was eigenlijk ons debuutalbum, en verscheen zoals je zei op het Duitse label Echozone. De single ‘Inside You’, die aan het album voorafging, gaat over introspectie, over het kijken naar je binnenste, eerder dan antwoorden buiten jezelf te zoeken. Op die manier leidt ‘Inside You’ naar ‘Vault’, een plaats waar je enkel leegte zult vinden, om jezelf te herbronnen. Het is de plaats waar je je ‘ware ik’ kunt vinden.

We gaan tegenwoordig door donkere tijden, en velen onderschatten het belang van spiritualiteit in het leven. Er is niet veel tijd voor de mensheid over om dit te vatten. In de pan-Indiase traditie werd deze periode van decadentie en ondergang van de wereld al lang voorzien, en staat het bekend als de ‘Kali Yuga’, wat in het Sanskriet zoveel betekent als het ongelukkig tijdperk of de zwarte tijd. Het is een tijd waarin schepping en onderhoud in vernieling overgaan.

Bloed is een terugkerend motief in je teksten. Als ik me niet vergis komt de sample aan het begin van ‘Bleeding Sky’ uit de film ‘Blade’. Wat inspireert je in dit onderwerp?

Bloed verwijst naar de kleur rood. In de Egyptische oudheid stond de kleur rood voor woede, chaos en vuur, en werd het nauw verbonden aan de Egyptische god van woestijnen, chaos en geweld Seth. Rood zou ook het leven kunnen voorstellen.

Je hebt het juist met die sample. Die komt uit ‘Blade’, een film waarin gezegd wordt: ‘ontwaak, er is een andere wereld hieronder’. Ik geloof in een andere kijk op de realiteit. Enkel door spiritueel vergaren kunnen we de waanbeelden van de conventionele werkelijkheid doorzien.

Zoals gezegd dateert ‘Vault’ alweer uit 2018. Zijn jullie bezig met een nieuwe plaat? Zo ja, wanneer kunnen we die verwachten?

Er zijn muzikanten die op voorhand praten over hun nieuw materiaal, maar wij doen dat niet. Misschien kom ik eerst wel met een zijproject af. Wie weet?
