A GREAT SPLIT ALBUM WITH 2 OF THE WILDEST EBM ACTS ON THE SCENE
STATIQBLOOM
Brooklyn's Statiqbloom is the dark hallucinogenic brainchild of Fade Kainer. Drawing from the grittiness of early industrial and EBM, Statiqbloom combines hard dance beats and haunting electronics with disorienting vocals to create a pulsing raw vision of music for today.
Kainer has also provided vocals and electronic soundscapes for industrial doom metal band Batillus, and, previously, industrial metal duo Inswarm. In addition, Kainer is a member of blackened synth band Theologian, has played synths and percussion on tour for Jarboe, and has done remixes for a variety of bands and artists, including Chris Connelly, Nachtmystium and Secrets of the Moon.
In 2013 Statiqbloom self-released the "Mask Vision Poison" EP. A new record (featuring Soren Roi of Rosenkopf) will be released as a split with Zex Model on Desire Records in Fall 2014.
ZEX MODEL
Zex Model tracks were recorded in late 2013 - early 2014, introducing the ERA II of the project sound (ERA I was the LP and ERA 0 was the EP, both on Desire) - moving from Skinny Puppy worship to electro-industrial experiments with some pop touch.
Benestrophe and early Mentallo And The Fixer could probably sound like that if they started out in mid 2010's and were recording in the middle of nowhere in Russia. Additional influences comes from variety of sources from 80's: japanese murdercore (GISM, Zouo, AT-Det, Mobs, Execute), On-U Sound label grim dubplate releases and (proto) black metal scene like Sarcofago and Vulcano. Die young.
The Joy of Nature is the musical project of LC who was born and lives in the archipelago of Azores, situated on Mid-Atlantic Ocean. The Joy of Nature’s music absorves elements from folk, ambient, indie and post rock to forge its own world through experimentation. The Joy of Nature creates musical innerscapes, paintings with music and sound. Its discography has albums released by labels such as Ahnstern, Little Somebody Records or Rage In Eden.»
Everything follows its own course, so no ending should ever be announced. After some time of inactivity, The Joy of Nature is back.
The brand new “Two Leaves Left” is a mini-album just released in a limited edition to 50 copies. It comes in a package in black satin with two leaves made out of fish flakes. On the inside there’s a jakebox with a vinyl-like CDr.
After (loosely) providing his take on Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Abel Ferrara has jumped to the tragic story of one of cinema’s greatest directors, Pier Paolo Pasolini.
Instead of a life-spanning biopic, Pasolini follows the perfectly cast Willem Dafoe as we track the director’s final days before he was murdered. Wrapping up Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom as he visits family and friends, Ferrara said he perhaps has answers some have been seeking regarding this November night in 1975.

The dance world way too often privileges the new, and not many dance artists write albums as good as In A Dream, the third full-length album by THE JUAN MACLEAN, this far into their career. The Juan Maclean have weathered electroclash, disco-punk, electro-disco, techno, house, deep house, and whatever we can call the sound of today. They never feel totally in step with the moment, but somehow always feel right and necessary. Put differently: there’s always something exciting to say about the music, regardless of the release date.
Let’s start with Nancy Whang. Nancy's voice has always been a kind of secret weapon on The Juan MacLean records, but this album is her triumph. Just take a look above at the album art where she’s front and centre. This is the Nancy Show -- you get all sides of Nancy on this record, a wide range of expression. These are all love songs, but emotions run wild. And you can't pull this off without Nancy -- she's not living in these songs, she's leading them.
Like every Juan record, this one quotes freely from house and techno and disco. Dead drums and vintage synthesizers are abundant. This is a DFA record, after all. But early on in their career, The Juan MacLean stopped sounding like genres and just started sounding like The Juan MacLean. Part of that is lyrical -- how the words interact with the melodies that carry them. The diction is always off in all the right ways. Another distinction is how much fun Juan and Nancy have with the arrangements of their songs. Different parts interact and play off one another in a way that’s remindful of the interplay on classic disco records.
The Juan Maclean always get away with EVERYTHING. For one, they always figure out a way to make the very old sound very new. For instance, the main groove on the album’s first track, “A Place Called Space,” is a combination of epic prog/rock, phased hi-hats, Moroder bass, vocals on delay, spacey lyrics. You've heard this before. But the surprise chorus halfway through is what makes it work: "It's too late, don't play your games here anymore," Nancy sings. All that colour and emotion… like she's chastising the song itself. Secondly, they always GO THERE. The sounds you’re just not supposed to reach for, the Juan always reaches for. Currently premiering on Pitchfork, the video can be watched HERE.
