Cinema icon Omar Sharif, best known for his legendary roles in classic films ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and ‘Doctor Zhivago’, died of a heart attack in Cairo yesterday, reports Press Trust of India (PTI).
He was 83.
The Egypt-born actor’s agent Steve Kenis said, “He suffered a heart attack this afternoon in a hospital in Cairo.”
Sharif was nominated for the Oscar for his role in the David Lean-directed film ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and went on to win a Golden Globe for his performance. It was his first English language role, after appearing in over 20 Egyptian films. In May, his son said the star had been suffering from Alzheimer’s and retired from the industry because of his illness.
He was married to fellow actor Faten Hamama, with whom he worked in the 1953 film ‘The Blazing Sun’. Hamama had starred in many films with Sharif, who was born a Christian and had converted to Islam to marry her. Many people connected Sharif’s illness with the passing of the iconic actress last January, saying that after her death he started to fade gradually.
The actor was born in Alexandria, Egypt and first rose to international fame for his role in 1962's ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ starring alongside Peter O’Toole.
Sharif worked less in recent years and his last role was in the 2013 drama ‘Rock the Casbah’.
He has one film still to be released: a short called ‘1001 Inventions and the World of Ibn Al-Haytham’.
In 2003 he was given a one-month suspended prison sentence and a 1,500 euro fine for headbutting a policeman in a Parisian casino
After two years, he was ordered to attend anger management classes and served two years probation after assaulting a Beverly Hills parking valet.
He was caught on video in 2011 apparently slapping a journalist after she attempted to take a photo with him at the Doha international film festival.
He is survived by his son and two grandsons.

Synopsis
From the writer of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Big Trouble in Little China comes a pop-sci-fi adventure that defies convention and went on to become one of the cult hits of the 80s.
Peter Weller is Buckaroo Banzai, a physicist-neurosurgeon-martial arts master-secret agent-rock star who has just made history with his invention, the Oscillation Overthruster. The Overthruster allows him to travel to the 8th Dimension, but this feat draws the attention of the Red Lectroids, an alien race (led by Christopher Lloyd) who have teamed up with Banzai’s nemesis, the deranged Dr Lizardo (John Lithgow). Lizardo and the Red Lectroids are seeking the Overthruster to take over the world and Banzai, with his team of agents/band musicians, The Hong Kong Cavaliers, must stop them before it’s too late!
With strong references to sci-fi and pop culture that span Thomas Pynchon and Orson Welles, Buckaroo Banzai is a film made by fans for fans and counts filmmakers including Wes Anderson and Kevin Smith among its admirers.

Following its hugely successful theatrical release Reg Traviss’ hard-hitting, thrill-ride Anti-Social makes its DVD debut along with its brand new, eclectic soundtrack, featuring never heard before material, as a free download, courtesy of Spirit Entertainment.
Grime stars Devlin and Skepta make their acting debuts in key roles in this slick film from Traviss, an established director with titles such as Joy Division and Screwed among his many feature film credits. Anti-Social comes to DVD on 14 September 2015.
Inspired by the spate of smash and grab robberies that hit the news between 2012 and 2013, this action-packed gangland thriller is set amidst London’s sub-cultures, with Dee (Gregg Sulkin), an anarchic graffiti artist, confronting the system, and his brother Marcus (Josh Myers) a smash and grab robber, trying to make it rich with a jewellery store crime wave. For the pair being anti-social is a way of life.
Sulkin (Sixty-Six, Faking It) and Myers are joined by a strong cast of new and established British acting talent, including This Is England’s Andrew Shim, Sophie Colquhoun (The Inbetweeners, Plebs), Richie Campbell (Anuvahood, Waterloo Road), Caroline Ford (Lake Placid, Sleepy Hollow) and Doug Allen (Band of Brothers, Chasing Shadows). American star of Suits, Meghan Markle features in a major role as Dee’s girlfriend Kirsten, alongside renowned German actor Christian Berkel (Downfall, Inglorious Basterds) and singer Lisa Moorish.
The soundtrack is made up of a composed-score by George Kallis (Highlander, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom) and original music which reflect the sub-cultures with a combination of Indie-Punk and Dance, Hip-Hop and Ska and includes tracks from Babyshambles’s Drew Mcconnell and Adam Falkner, The King Blues’s Johnny ‘Itch’ Fox, Massive Attack’s Shara Nelson and rapper Rodney P.
