This Is The Kit is the beloved musical project of one Kate Stables, born in Winchester, England and now at home in Paris, France, her third album Bashed Out will be released on April 6th via Brassland.
Having won over Elbow frontman Guy Garvey – who argued her last record should have been Mercury Prize nominated – as well as his fellow BBC 6Music & Radio 1 DJs (Lauren Laverne, Marc Riley, Cerys Matthews, Huw Stephens, Phil Taggart), This Is The Kit has also been hand-picked to support the likes of Sharon Van Etten, Iron & Wine, Jose Gonzales and Alexi Murdoch – a who's who of iconic folk-inflected songwriters.
Bashed Out is produced by another supporter, The National's Aaron Dessner (co-founder of Brassland), and features performances from Aaron, his brother Bryce Dessner, Benjamin Lanz (Beirut), Thomas Bartlett (Doveman, The Gloaming) and Matt Barrick (The Walkmen) alongside her regular cast of collaborators.
The resulting record is honest, human and humane.
Growing up in a green leafy English town, multi-instrumentalist Kate learned from an early age that great art takes time. “The place I grew up is defined as a Roman Saxon medieval city, they started building the Winchester Cathedral a thousand years ago and have been working on it ever since” she explains.
This Is The Kit have been in existence since the 00s, moving to Bristol to continue her musical education, before upping sticks and leaving for Paris. It was here where her debut album Krulle Bol took shape, recorded and produced by PJ Harvey's long-standing musical collaborator John Parish. Her second album, 2010's Wriggle Out The Restless was made in France alongside members of Francois and the Atlas Mountains before final touches from TITK's extended musical family were added in Bristol, Belgium and several points in between.
The continuing expansion of TITK's musical family is where the story of Bashed Out starts — beginning with a pair of intersections with the story of now legendary New York band The National. Kate's eldest sister Jane Stables was an early fan and friend to the band – providing couches and floors for them on their first UK tour in 2002. That friendship is why in 2011, The National ended up at a small Hackney cafe watching This Is The Kit. Struck by what he'd heard, Aaron offered to reissue Wriggle Out The Restless (which had fallen victim to two labels going out of business) and support slots at New York City's Beacon Theatre and London's Alexandra Palace.
A demo exchange followed across the Atlantic and in early 2014, Kate flew to Brooklyn to flesh out her ideas into full recordings. Her past experience allowed her to quickly plug into an entirely new musical community and Based Out was swiftly completed.
"The main reason for doing what I do is the exchange with other people—musical exchange yes, and other exchanges too. A hello and a handshake and the constant opportunity to learn from the knowledge and experience of others. As far as I can work out, the only thing worth doing in life is meeting, helping and swapping stories and experiences and resources with other people. Doing, making, learning."
To some, Bashed Outmight mean broken. For This is the Kit, though, it is a statement of intent, how art happens, through happenstance meetings and accidental collisions and pushing through.
TITK are known for their shapeshifting line up, which can over the course of a few gigs, transform from a duo to a psychdelia-tinged electric five piece. Kate's long-term collaborator Rozi Plain is usually the one constant at live shows and the full band will head out on a UK tour next month.

The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.
But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.
The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award® winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind...from annihilation.
Featuring a soundtrack of hit music from the ’60s that still permeates our culture today, Minions is produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda. Arizona indie electro group Bella Lune has released their fourth official studio album, ‘Tranzendance’, on January 31, 2015, via the band’s self-run record label Aetheria Music.
Their first album since 2013’s ‘Secrets’ draws on influences from dance-oriented music like EDM, EBM, pop and ethereal trap, and adds a more bass-heavy approach to their song template of post-punk and ethereal music. Lyrical topics include introspection in both positive and negative lights, in addition to the politically charged “Cease To Exist,” which concerns climate change.
The album as a whole is a collaboration between Bella Lune front-woman Fuchsia Angel, keyboardist Hurley and Mike Jenney of Alter Der Ruine. Jenney laid the beats and percussion for each song and provided additional production. Under his side-project Dystonix, Alex King of BlakOpz also contributed a remix of “Hollow Hearts,” a song from ‘Secrets’, adding layers of dance-oriented synths and a heavier atmosphere.
‘Tranzendance’ is available for purchase as a digipack on the band’s website http://bellalune.net/. Fans can also name their price for a download of the album on the Bandcamp page http://bellalune.bandcamp.com/. A portion of all proceeds go to musicandmemory.org, a charity that seeks to enrich the lives of elderly Alzheimer's patients in nursing homes through music therapy.

Scout Paré-Phillips’ recent recognition as a young and talented visual artist based in Brooklyn, NY – as displayed in her accomplished portfolios – shows only a small portal into the creative road that Scout has chosen to go down. Scout’s musical foray started with the Baltimore based post-punk/country act, The Sterling Sisters. Within the Sisters, her skills as one-half of the primary songwriting force, coupled with her varied instrumentation and balladeer vocal projections made way for Scout to step aside and embark on her own solo performances and creative endeavors.
Scout’s operatically trained soprano voice combined with her seemingly effortless proficiency with instruments such as the autoharp and baritone guitar create her own unique hybrid of old time folk storytelling and modern illusionary contrast. Influenced by acoustic legends such as Sibylle Baier and Leonard Cohen, the vocal conviction of Roy Orbison, and still holding poetic court with players like Rowland S. Howard, Nick Cave and Diamanda Galas, Scout Paré-Phillips’ songwriting lands in the middle of some very intriguing yet complex influences.
Recently, Scout’s talents have been noticed by Jack White (The White Stripes / Third Man). She was asked to accompany him on Lazaretto and even star in White’s new video, Would You Fight For My Love?. Her recent autobiographical songs have been collected into her debut album entitled “Heed the Call” to be released on Dais Recordson February 24, 2015.
Crashing crescendos of guitar, percussively strummed autoharp and an array of both acoustic and electronic sculptures by Scout Paré-Phillips with accompaniment by Scout’s beloved musical collaborator, Emil Bognar-Nasdor (Dawn of Humans, Røsenkopf), populate her LP. Scout’s torch songs of pure, raw emotional outpouring compliment the rich timbre of her trained voice, which breathes a new life into the contemporary idea of a “folk singer”. Her narrative about two lovers being torn apart and brought back together over many years has formed a new genre within acoustic music’s storytelling tradition.
