Announcing Sherlock Holmes (1916) | Long-Lost Film Rediscovered & Newly-Restored for Blu-ray/DVD

16th of May 2015, 16:00

In commemoration of the 99th anniversary of the film's original release, Flicker Alley-along with the San Francisco Silent Film Festival and la Cinémathèque française-is proud to present the Blu-ray/DVD premiere of one of the holy grails of lost films: William Gillette's Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes

Deluxe Blu-ray/DVD Combo Edition

M.S.R.P. $39.95

Sherlock Holmes / 1916 / Directed by Arthur Berthelet / 116 minutes / USA / Produced by Essanay Film Manufacturing Company / Restored by the San Francisco Silent Film Festival and la Cinémathèque française

Long considered lost until a complete dupe negative was identified in the vaults of la Cinémathèque française last year, this William Gillette film is a vital missing link in the history of Sherlock Holmes on screen. By the time it was produced at Essanay Studios in 1916, Gillette had been established as the world's foremost interpreter of Holmes on stage-having played him approximately 1300 times since his 1899 debut. This newly-restored edition, thanks to the monumental efforts of both the San Francisco Silent Film Festival and la Cinémathèque française, represents the sole surviving appearance of Gillette's Holmes on film. Presented with optional French and English intertitles and an original score composed and performed by Neil Brand, Guenter Buchwald, and Frank Bockius, Flicker Alley is honored to bring Sherlock Holmes onto Blu-ray and DVD for the first time ever.

The film faithfully retains the play's famous set pieces-Holmes's encounter with Professor Moriarty, his daring escape from the Stepney Gas Chamber, and the tour-de-force deductions. It also illustrates how Gillette, who wrote the adaptation himself, wove bits from Conan Doyle's stories ranging from "A Scandal in Bohemia" to "The Final Problem," into an original, innovative mystery play.

Film restorer Robert Byrne says, "It's an amazing privilege to work with these reels that have been lost for generations. William Gillette's Sherlock Holmes has ranked among the holy grails of lost film and my first glimpse of the footage confirms Gillette's magnetism. Audiences are going to be blown away when they see the original Sherlock Holmes on screen for the first time."

Bonus Materials Include:

Sherlock Holmes Baffled (1900): Courtesy of the Library of Congress and presented in HD, this is the earliest known film to feature the character of Sherlock Holmes.

A Canine Sherlock (1912): From the EYE Film Institute, the film stars Spot the Dog as the titular character.

Più forte che Sherlock Holmes (1913): Also from the EYE Film Institute, this entertaining Italian trick-film owes as much to Méliès as it does Doyle.

HD transfers from the Fox Movietone Collection: Interview with Arthur Conan Doyle and outtakes from a 1930 broadcast with William Gillette showing off his amateur railroad (University of South Carolina).

A PDF manuscript of the 1899 Sherlock Holmes play by William Gillette.

A PDF of the original contract between William Gillette and the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company.

A booklet featuring images from the film and information about the restoration project.

Island of Death - On Blu-ray 25th May 2015

16th of May 2015, 15:58

Arrow Video is thrilled to announce the world premiere Blu-ray release of cult director Nico Mastorakis’ shocking video nasty, Island of Death. Upon its initial release some 40 years ago, this catalogue of atrocities featured scenes too shocking for the British public and was subsequently banned. However, this newly restored director-approved edition will debut fully-uncut on Blu-ray in all its sleazy and lurid glory (or should that say gory!) from 25th May 2015.

Boasting a brand new 2K restoration of the film from the original camera negative, this new director-approved disc will come loaded with a jam-packed 7 hours of bonus content, including two new featurettes Exploring Island of Death, in which film historian Stephen Thrower discusses the making of the cult classic, and Return to Island of Death in which Mastorakis returns to the original Mykonos locations.

Alongside this, the new release will feature an archive interview with Mastorakis, alternative opening titles and five original tracks from the Island of Death soundtrack. The Films of Nico Mastorakis, a four-part documentary charting the director’s filmmaking career [Blu-ray only] and the Nico Mastorakis Trailer Reel [Blu-ray only] round out the feature-filled package.

In addition, the Blu-ray comes with a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Graham Humphreys and a fully-illustrated collector’s booklet featuring new writing by academic and film historian Johnny Walker.

Synopsis

Welcome to Mykonos, the holiday destination of choice for sun, sea and slaughter! From cult director Nico Mastorakis, Island of Death is a travelogue of atrocities with scenes so strong that the British Government was once compelled to ban it as a “video nasty”.

Arriving on the idyllic Greek island, Christopher and Celia appear to be every inch the perfect, handsome young couple. Little do the welcoming locals realise that they are in fact a pair of murderous degenerates, determined to spread their own particular brand of perversion across the island. DIY crucifixions, opportunistic bestiality, sexual peeing and murder by all conceivable forms ensue – including death by makeshift blowtorch, samurai sword, dump truck and more!

Shocking, brutal and totally politically incorrect in its outlook, Island of Death is a gruelling cinematic experience devised by director Mastorakis to out-do the excesses of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, which he was hugely inspired by. Now fully uncut and newly-restored from the original negative, fans can enjoy Island of Death in all its sleazy, lurid glory.

NEWS David Lynch Returns To 'Twin Peaks'

David Lynch Returns To 'Twin Peaks'

16th of May 2015, 15:56

A few months ago, David Lynch pulled out of Showtime's "Twin Peaks" reboot following a dispute with the network over money. Shortly thereafter, the show's cast members put out a video calling for Lynch's return. Apparently he heard them; tonight, Lynch announced his return to the project via posts on Twitter, and later, Facebook. "The rumors are not what they seem..... It is !!! Happening again," Lynch wrote. The show is currently in pre-production, according to Indiewire.

As Indiewire reports, the pivotal filmmaker will co-write and direct the "Twin Peaks" reboot – and what's more, the show has been expanded beyond than the originally announced nine-hour run time. “This damn fine cup of coffee from Mark and David tastes more delicious than ever," Showtime president David Nevins told Indiewire, invoking Dale Cooper's beloved beverage: “[It was] totally worth the extra brewing time and the cup is even bigger than we expected.”

NEWS Be My Enemy and AlterRed On Tour

Be My Enemy and AlterRed On Tour

15th of May 2015, 17:05

This summer sees two of the UK's finest acts on the industrial scene hitting the road together! Be My Enemy and AlterRed are playing six shows across the UK in June 2015.BE MY ENEMY:Phil Barry of CUBANATE is back doing what he does best: heavy guitar riffs, banging beats and squelching acidic synth basslines. With the added twist, this time around, of Phil himself taking on the vocal duties, welcome to Phil Barry's new band - Be My Enemy.Be My Enemy's debut album 'This Is The New Wave', was 10 tracks of techno-metal every bit as brutal as the riot-gear-clad police that adorn the cover. Analogue rave synth lines and break beats battle with chunky metal guitars to evoke the finest moments of other British dance/rock crossover acts like PITCHSHIFTER and PRODIGY: all topped with the sneering Lydon-esque vocal delivery of Barry. Phil is joined on stage by accomplished musician Keef Baker on bass and Steve & Deb Alton from System:FX on guitar and drums respectively

.In Spring 2014, Be My Enemy released their second album entitled 'The Enemy Within' which received great critical acclaim and made dance floors move at shows all across England. This is punk, rave, metal all put through the blender and spat out with unadulterated venom.ALTERRED:With an array of recognizable influences from Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Jane's Addiction and IAMX, the end result is a unique melting-pot of sound and imagery. AlterRed have made a dramatic and impressive impact on a wide variety of audiences with their flamboyant live shows. Self medicated madness is their remit. Love, lust, lunacy and loss are their tales to tell. Music to lose your mind to!

They will release their 4th studio album 'In the Land of the Blind...' on the 7th August 2015 on WTII Records. This album is a departure from the band's electro-cabaret sound, focussing far more on their rock-industrial and electro-rock influences. Bigger, harder, faster and darker!

Juno Reactor Release Debut Single 'Guillotine (BLiSS Remix)' Off of Upcoming 'The Golden Sun...Remixed'

14th of May 2015, 10:45

nderground Electronic Legends Juno Reactor have released the first track, "Guillotine (BLiSS Remix)", off of their upcoming The Golden Sun... Remixed, with an Exclusive Premiere on Your EDM on Friday, May 8, 2015. Quite possibly, it is one of the nuttiest tracks I’ve heard; it jumps around all over the place in such a smooth manner that you don’t even realize that eight minutes and thirty seconds just passed when you get to the end of it. In pulling from a Euro-trashy style, a completely chaotic, but beautifully organized remix...put together by BLiSS. Tyler Trew

Out June 5th on Metropolis Records!
