NEWS Inventions announce new album, 'Maze Of Woods'

Inventions announce new album, 'Maze Of Woods'

13th of January 2015, 18:29

INVENTIONS are the collaborative sum of longtime friends Matthew Cooper of Eluvium, and Mark T. Smith of Explosions In The Sky. Their 2013 eponymous debut album introduced an ambition to create music that was both challenging and comforting. Lead track "Springworlds" can be heard below...

heir new album, Maze of Woods, opens with a vocal sample declaring, "I wanted to do something that I don't know how to do." Using this as a mission statement, Inventions have crafted a complex and exuberant album from an array of instruments, samples, found sounds, beats, chants, and raw bursts of noise, with a much greater emphasis on strong vocal accompaniment in every song.

Two albums released in the span of 10 months speaks to the drive that these two have felt since they started playing together. Much like on the first record, they again mixed the album in a house on the Oregon coastline, with final mixing and production all done by Smith and Cooper.

Inventions have stated that much of the inspiration for Maze of Woods comes from the closing paragraph of Denis Johnson's novella Train Dreams. In that paragraph, Johnson describes the non-verbal howl of a feral wolf boy, a pre-language that is yearning and instinctual; a statement of wordless distress and love. Maze of Woods is the product of two masters of their craft getting lost in the wilderness, "doing something that they don't know how to do," and emerging with something wholly unexpected and beguilingly beautiful.

Maze of Woods will be released 16th March on Bella Union.

Spoof football documentary 'United We Fall' comes to DVD

13th of January 2015, 18:26

Scholes, Giggs, Neville, Neville, Butt and Beckham…The Class Of ’92 transformed a football team, won trophies, international caps and ushered in a new era for football…

Now meet Hunter, Fallis, Keegan, Kurtz and Amoako. They followed in their predecessors’ illustrious footsteps and were on the verge of matching their achievements in one record-breaking season.

And then it all fell apart.

United We Fall charts the rise and fall of this quintet in a hilarious spoof soccer documentary, and answers the question asked of another Manchester United legend, George Best: “Where did it all go wrong?” It comes to DVD on 9 February 2015 courtesy of Metrodome.

Improvised and filmed by Gary Sinyor, the film, which was released in cinemas in October, tells the tale of footballers gone bad. Racism, homophobia, philandering footballers – all get a proverbial roasting in this comedy that’s less Class Of 92 and more IQ of 92.

Olly Hunter (Jack Donnelly – Atlantis) is the bankable brand of the team; Danny Keegan (Ryan Pope) the millionaire socialist; Stevo Fallis (James Rastall) the dirty player and practical joker; Kwasi ‘Modo’ Amoako (Matthew Avery) is a Ghanaian who likes the high-life and lives a rapper’s lifestyle and ‘Kurtzie’ (Jonathan Broke) is the German keeper with an obsessive personality. They are the heart and soul of the United team who are only a few hours away from a historical treble.

How did it all go pear-shaped? The unraveling of their season is told in interviews with the players and, climactically, in a toe crunching reunion with the players - and their WAGs.

Einsturzende Neubauten play at the AB

EN

An unique two-day with Neubauten. Unique as in: ' Belgium is the only European country in which the band resides in the same room. " And unique as in: ' Neubauten plays every day a completely different program. " Especially for the fans there are a limited number of combination tickets - 300 to be exact - are available. Schnell his is the message.

On WEDNESDAY 27 MAY Einstürzende Neubauten picks eagerly from their work of the past 35 years under the slightly ironic title ' Greatest Hits'. Enough classic albums as " Perpetuum Mobile ", " Ende Neu ", " Tabula Rasa " or " Silence Is Sexy ' to sculpt a superb setlist from.

On THURSDAY 28 MAY Einstürzende Neubauten plays integral their recent war magnus opus ' Lament'. Their ode to the Great War of 1914-1918 experienced last year its world premiere in Diksmuide.

De Standaard : " An impressive performance over the traumas of war noise."

De Morgen: ' World Premiere conveyed a deep, deep impression.

NL

Blackest Ever Black announces 12' for Felix K

12th of January 2015, 18:06

Felix K arrives on Blackest Ever Black with a front-rank EP of bleak, bombed-out soundboy electronics.
Felix has been active in the underground of his native Berlin since the late ’90s, often working incognito. His roots are in drum-and-bass, and he has repeatedly advanced and invigorated the genre with his own adroitly minimalist, dub-centered productions, making important lateral connections to austere Hard Wax-school techno and more abstract electronic realms. With their Hidden Hawaii label and its small galaxy of subsidiary labels, meanwhile, Felix and his co-conspirators are futurists who still kill the old way: doggedly DIY, committed to short-run white label culture and covert action.
Even in the context of his wide-ranging discography, Tragedy of the Commons’ 17-minute title track is a stand-alone experiment in form: a labyrinthine, slow-burning dread epic, beatless but crushingly dynamic, its frail minimal synth lines wandering lonely amid plate-shifting bass drones and a dense, disorienting assemblage of field recordings. It’s exemplary Berlin noir: hurt but stoic, pessimistic but unyielding, and closely attuned to the city’s strange psychogeography.
The haunted weather intensifies in the hulking ‘Silent Money’. While dub is there in the DNA of all Felix K output, this is his most explicit nod to the source, a slow-motion soundsystem downer armed with frequencies fit to disinter the dead. Ghosts awoken stick around for Onar Anxiety’s thunderous sub-low techno remix of ‘Fundamentals’, their howled chorus equal in force and fury to the cantering tribal drums.
The 12″ – cut by Matt Colton and presented in full LP-style sleeve, with download code included, in an edition of 500 copies – can be pre-ordered now ahead of February 16 release. Digital formats will be available to buy separately later in the year.

John Carpenter shares new track 'Night', details BAM film retrospective

12th of January 2015, 18:04

John Carpenter, the Legendary Director and Composer behind Halloween, Escape From New York, They Live, Assault on Precinct 13 and many more shares a brand new track “Night” from his debut solo album ‘Lost Themes’ out February 3rd on Sacred Bones Records. Listen to “Night” here.

John Carpenter has been responsible for much of the horror genre’s most striking soundtrack work in the fifteen movies he’s both directed and scored. The themes that drive them can be stripped to a few coldly repeating notes, take on the electrifying thunder of a rock concert, or submerge themselves into exotic, unholy miasmas. It’s work that instantly floods his fans’ musical memory with imagery of a menacing shape stalking a babysitter, a relentless wall of ghost-filled fog, lightning-fisted kung fu fighters, or a mirror holding the gateway to hell. Lost Themes asks Carpenter’s acolytes to visualize their own nightmares.

Carpenter will also make a rare New York appearance at BAM on Thursday, February 5 to discuss his legendary career and celebrate the release of his debut solo album, Lost Themes. Tickets are on sale now.

Carpenter will be joined by Brooke Gladstone, host of NPR’s On the Media, for a wide-ranging discussion of his film and music. His first non-soundtrack work, Lost Themes will be released the week of the event on Sacred Bones Records.

Additionally BAMcinématek will host a month long film retrospective of all of Carpenter’s feature films from Feb. 6-22. More information on events can be found at www.BAM.org/Carpenter.

Sacred Bones has also announced the digital deluxe issue of the album.
