Today, 35 years ago, Depeche Mode performed People Are People on German TV.
On 14 March 1984 the English synth pop band Depeche Mode presented their brand new single ‘People Are People’ which was only released two days before (12 March 1984) on the German Top-pop TV show Flashlights.
Six weeks later the single reached the first place in the German single charts and stayed on this number one position for 3 weeks. In West Germany, it was used as the theme to West German TV's coverage of the 1984 Olympics, alluding to East Germany's participation in the Soviet-led boycott of the games.
The single was taken from the album ‘Some Great Reward’ which made it to the 3rd position in the German pop album charts. The album also became gold record with over 150,000 copies sold.
It also became their first hit-single in the US where the single would eventually peak at no. 13. In the UK, the single reached number 4, which was at the time the band's highest singles chart position in their homeland.
In 2011 the song was included on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of the "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll"
People are People (Lyrics)
People are people so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
So we're different colours
And we're different creeds
And different people have different needs
It's obvious you hate me
Though I've done nothing wrong
I never even met you
So what could I have done
I can't understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand
People are people so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
Help me understand
Now you're punching and you're kicking
And you're shouting at me
I'm relying on your common decency
So far it hasn't surfaced
But I'm sure it exists
It just takes a while to travel
From your head to your fist
I can't understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand

12” Singles [will be issued separately]
Ceremony (version 1)
Recorded at Eastern Artists Recordings in East Orange, New Jersey, during the US visit the previous September, New Order’s first single might, in an alternative universe, have been Joy Division’s next. The 12” single, originally released in March 1981 (the 7” having been released in January) including the original version of ‘Ceremony’, will feature remastered audio on heavyweight vinyl.

Everythings Gone Green
Originally released on Factory Benelux in December 1981, this 12” featured Everythings Gone Green, which had previously been on the reverse of the band’s second 7” single ‘Procession’ in September 1981,and ‘Cries And Whispers’ and ‘Mesh’ whose titles were flipped on the cover causing confusion amongst fans and compilers ever since. This 12” will feature remastered audio on heavyweight vinyl.

This year’s Bluedot Festival at Cheshire’s Jodrell Bank Observatory, United Kingdom will be one of particular importance to purists of seventies and eighties electronic, new wave music.
Both Kraftwerk and New Order are co-headliners for the event running from July 18-21. On the Friday,(18th) Hot Chip, the indie electronic juggernaut will close the days music, while the Saturday night brings Kraftwerk and their spectacular 3-D show. The Sunday night is the turn of New Order to close out the three-day event.
Whatever your views might be of outfits who do not include all the original members-Peter Hook has long departed New Order, and Ralf Hütter is Kraftwerks only remaining founding member.
The fact remains the names and the music will truly make this a worthwhile event, for those willing to or contemplating the adventure to Cheshire, below is the most recent New Order setlist from January of this year along with the average set performed by Kraftwerk-the mouthwatering prospect of seeing these two acts could make this one concert to certainly look forward to.

Since 1981, Ministry has drenched millions with their sonic psychotic sounds with releases such as “Filth Pig”, “The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste”, “Psalm 69”, “In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up”. Since the 80s, founder Al Jourgensen, has been combining elements of industrial synth pop, punk, metal and even dub in a way that is instantly recognizable and has influenced many other bands. Jourgensen, not a fan of touring, a point he has spoken about openly, this year however he is giving audiences and fans an avalanche of gigs across Europe and the United Kingdom.
On the back of last year’s triumphant release AmeriKKKant, a concept album which delves into the state of a nation, fans will get the chance to see the songs and legendary favorites played live and very loud.

Today, 33 years ago, American Industrial band Ministry released their second studio album Twitch. Unlike their synth-pop sounding debut album With Sympathy and due to the influences of bands like Front 242 and Cabaret Voltaire, Twitch received a more dark and aggressive production approach by Adrian Sherwoord and the bands head and voice Al Jourgensen.
Over The Shoulder, accompanied by a video directed by Peter Christopherson (Throbbing Gristle /Coil) was the only single taken from this album.
In 1990 Twitch was reissued on CD and contained two extra tracks, being the exclusive tracks on the Over The Shoulder 12” single until that time.
Tracklist Twitch:
1. Just Like You
2. We Believe
3. All Day Remix
4. The Angel
5. Over the Shoulder
6. My Possession
7. Where You at Now? / Crash & Burn / Twitch" (Version II)
CD bonus tracks
8. Over the Shoulder (12" Version)
9. Isle of Man" (Version II)
