NEWS Martin Scorsese Is Making A Ramones Biopic

Martin Scorsese Is Making A Ramones Biopic

28th of August 2014, 17:34

Music has long played a very important role in Martin Scorsese's career. Whether it's the memorable uses of songs like Eric Clapton's "Layla" or "I’m Shipping Up to Boston" by Dropkick Murphys in features like Goodfellas and The Departed or concert documentaries he's helmed like The Last Waltz and Shine A Light, the filmmaker has long found a way to bring the two mediums into harmonious sync. It's for this reason that we're not at all shocked by what's being proposed as Scorsese's next project after the religious period drama Silence.

Billboard has it on good authority that Martin Scorsese is in the early process of trying to make a movie about The Ramones, the legendary punk band. While things appear to still be in the early stages, Jeff Jampol and Dave Frey - the co-managers of the band's estate - are working to plan a big celebration of The Ramones' legacy for 2016, which will mark the 40th anniversary of the group's first record. It's worth noting that Silence isn't expected to come out until some time next year, and that Scorsese isn't exactly one to rush projects along.

First coming together in the mid-1970s in New York City, The Ramones originally consisted of lead singer Joey, guitarist Johnny, drummer Tommy and bassist Dee Dee. They all took the last name "Ramone," but none of them were actually related to one another. Between 1976 and 1995 the band released 14 studio albums and were well known for constantly touring and playing live shows. All four of the original members have passed away, Tommy Ramone dying from bile duct cancer earlier this summer. Some of their most memorable tracks include "Blitzkrieg Bop," "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Rock 'n Roll High School," and "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker."Billboard adds that in addition to a biopic there is also a documentary, a theatrical play, and a book in the works commemorating the band.

While Scorsese is now 71 years old and has mentioned the inevitability of retirement, that still seems like it could be a long way off for the filmmaker. In addition to Silence, he has also long been talking about making a Frank Sinatra biopic and has spent many years planning his reunion with Robert De Niro on The Irishman a.k.a. I Heard You Paint Houses. When you consider how much incredible energy is in the director's last work, The Wolf of Wall Street, it's really hard to imagine him ever giving up the business for good.

Giving his background in music, do you think Martin Scorsese is a good fit for helming a Ramones biopic? Who would you like to see star as the members of the band? Tell us what you're thinking in the comments section below.

NEWS Desire proudly reissues D.Stop debut album

Desire proudly reissues D.Stop debut album

28th of August 2014, 17:31

Founded in september 1981 in Orléans (France), and originally dedcated to a kind of ‘modern punk rock’. D.Stop released a first 7’’ the following year (to be reissued later on desire with extra tracks).

After their first 7”, Sonny Brailleur (vocals) + Phil Lethon (guitar/bass) + Klod Lelook (organ, synths, drum-machines) , inspired by French band Metal Urbain, stylistically transformed into a more ‘synth punk’ kind of outfit and released their first mini-album Nouvelles du Front in September 1983. Only released in an edition of 500 copies on the small indie label Romance, the album is now changing hands for $150.

One year after, the band already ceased to exist – or actually changed the name to Les Visiteurs du Soir – to turn back to the old name in 1985 by releasing a limited MC. Despite the very few releases by this gifted act, D.STOP are considered to be one of the most interesting and under-rated cult acts in French Cold Wave.

THE FACES OF SARAH - Announces new EP to be released in September

28th of August 2014, 17:28

The Faces Of Sarah (or shorter FOS), dark alternative rock band from London are back after a long term of hiatus with a brand new EP entitled Past Life, set to be released on 29th September as a self-release. It will be available to buy/download from all main download stores, initially released just as a digital edition. Past Life EP is a predecessor for a full-lenght album which is already in the making and should be released in 2015.

The band explains about the EP: "This EP is a loose narrative based on the life of a veteran looking back on his past endeavours.

Covering teenage angst, running with the pack, love, heartbreak and retrospection. The new release concentrates on a more modern tonality and structure, while still keeping the essence of past compositions. Influenced by artists like Paradise Lost, Killing Joke, latter day Johnny Cash, HIM, Dream Theater, Nick Cave and Pink Floyd to name a few, FoS have a new found depth and versatility in an already vibrant and dark sound."

TAIGA – THE ALBUM - OUT 6 OCTOBER 2014

14.11.2014 | BOTANIQUE, Brussels

“Her poppiest song and most air-punching chorus to date” The Guardian Guide Daily

“Nika Danilova’s voice is an elemental, powerful thing.” (Best New Music) – Pitchfork

“A dance pop affirmation that continues her development into her own kind of pop icon” FACT

“Fluid, flamboyant and more than a little contagious” Clash

“A stomping synth number that builds into something bordering on euphoric” DIY

“Stunning” The Line Of Best Fit

“A beautiful electro-pop gem, and the only thing dangerous about it is how addictive it is” Nylon

“‘Totally infectious" NPR

“Swooning synth arpeggios and crisp drums…provide a spacious bed for her typically bombastic vocal lines” Spin

“Nika sounds more uninhibited than ever… her finest and most ambitious moment yet” NME

Zola Jesus unleashes an otherworldly video for ‘Dangerous Days’ directed by contemporary visionary Tim Saccenti who has created an awe-inspiring backdrop for this anthemic song. Saccenti explains, “The song is a pure emotional plea, a future primitive call to arms. To create a moment of light in these dark times was our hope. Eschewing a heavy narrative we let the images of the Earth, filmed in wide screen and mixed with a tense unnatural presence, wash over the viewer while Nika communicates her powerful message.” Nika describes the video making process, “Working with Tim was effortless. His creative ambition to turn the abstract into a tangible feel is a rare treasure.” Watch the video for ‘Dangerous Days’ here: http://youtu.be/As-issfZ2-Q

Zola Jesus’s TAIGA is due for release on 6 October 2014 on Mute. First single ‘Dangerous Days’ is now available to stream - http://bit.ly/1pan7HA - and the album is available to pre-order http://found.ee/taigadigital. Zola Jesus embarks on a worldwide tour throughout October and November. After arriving in the UK on 29 October for a show in Bristol, she travels throughout the UK and Europe, finishing with a London date at KOKO on 18 November. Full details below.

Nika is the 25-year-old behind Zola Jesus’ creative incarnations as sole singer and songwriter. Influenced by her time in Iceland, Vermont, and British Columbia, TAIGA was written on Vashon Island, WA and conjures all these places while creating a sonic space of its own that each listener can travel to, explore, hide in, and celebrate. Nika tracked and mixed the album in Los Angeles with co-producer Dean Hurley (David Lynch, Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse).

At once challenging and accessible, TAIGA is a transition for Zola Jesus. Undeniably branded with what Nika terms a “piercing ambition,” the album is best described by the artist herself: “The music on the record is massive, with big brass and beats, crystal clear vocals…It’s the most accessible music I’ve ever made, but also the most earnest and passionate. I gave everything for this record, more than ever before.”

In The Name Of out on DVD (Wild Bunch)

27th of August 2014, 18:09

In The Name Of; out on 18th September on DVD on Wild Bunch.

Directed by auteur Malgoska Szumowska (ELLES) and winner of this 2013's Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival, IN THE NAME OF is a gripping and controversial look at homosexuality in the church, steeped in religious symbolism resonating with current issues in today's society.

Adam is a Catholic priest who discovered his calling as a servant of God at the relatively late age of 21. He now lives in a village in rural Poland where he works with teenagers with behavioral problems who fight and yell abuse. He declines the advances of a young brunette named Ewa; saying he is already spoken for. However; celibacy is not the only reason for his rejection. Adam knows that he desires men and that his embrace of the priesthood has been a flight from his own sexuality. When he meets Dynia; the strange and taciturn son of a simple rural family; Adam's self-imposed abstinence becomes a heavy burden.
