Francis Lai receives World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award at FilmFest Ghent
Following the 41st Film Fest Gent’s focus on France, the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to French composer Francis Lai at the 14th World Soundtrack Awards.
Francis Lai (born in 1932 in Nice) became world famous with A man and a woman (1966) his first score for a film by Claude Lelouch, for whom he would compose over thirty scores the next four decades.
The Oscar winning film A man and a woman launched the career of Lelouch and made Lai a celebrated French film composer with an international career. Thanks to the chabadabada tune, the music of A man and a woman topped the music charts. In this film, as well as in the follow-up Live for Life (1967), he introduced the authentic use of both English and French chansons sung by Pierre Barouh and Nicole Croisille, which became an innovative, refreshing and romantic sound in French film music.
In 1970 Lai scored his biggest international hit with the soundtrack of the phenomenal blockbuster Love Story (1970) by Arthur Hiller. He achieved his biggest cult success with the film Bilitis (1977) by softcore sex photographer David Hamilton. Other acclaimed films for which he wrote the music are Rider on the Rain by Rene Clement, Anima Persa by Dino Risi, My new Partner by Claude Zidi and Dark Eyes by Nikita Mikhalkov.
During the WSA concert, Francis Lai will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding career in film music. A selection of his work will be performed by the Brussels Philharmonic and conducted by Dirk Brossé.
In addition to the oeuvre of Lai, Jeff Neve’s captivating music for the prestigious Flemish drama series In Flanders Fields will also be getting some deserved attention that evening. With this score, Jef Neve proved that he is not only a gifted jazz musician but also a very inspired composer of many talents. He will be performing a selection of the music he wrote, accompanied by footage from the series.
Confirmed central guests and performers at the World Soundtrack Awards are American composer Cliff Martinez (Drive, Only God Forgives, Contagion and Spring Breakers) and 2013 WSA Discovery Award winner Dan Romer (Beasts of the Southern Wild).
14th World Soundtrack Awards & Concert will take place on 25 October 2014 at Kuipke in Ghent. Tickets are available on the website www.worldsoundtrackawards.com. The 41st Film Fest Gent runs from 14 until 25 October 2014. All info can be found on www.filmfestival.be.

Hocico, Mexico's top export for hard electronic sounds, are a one-of-a-kind experience live on any given day, a thunderstorm of wrath, beats and aggressive shouts that will leave audiences spellbound where ever they are performing. On August 30th, 2013, Erk Aicrag and Racso Agroyam celebrated the 20th anniversary of their legendary band with a massive show that was special in more than one way. Not only did they put together an exclusive set list that spanned their entire career but they also had a lot of surprises in store (a Mexican Day-Of-The-Dead-style Mariachi band being just one of the attractions) to add to the overall experience. An audience composed of fans from all over the world in a jam-packed club was eagerly set on celebrating 2 decades of uncompromising sounds and Hocico were intent on delivering the goods, the enthusiastic crowd response additionally fuelling their infernal performance. This resulted in an explosive, yet magical energy and in an evening that none of those that attended will forget anytime soon. On „Die Hölle Über Berlin“, this singular event is documented in a raw, massive and aggressive manner that befits the music and spirit of the band. The release is limited to 1000 numbered copies world-wide and comes as a CD with bonus DVD in a lavish Digipak long box double pack. So, hitch a ride to hell in your own for walls with Hocico! This special release is a must-own for any fan and the ideal way to experience one of the most important concert experiences of the Hard-Electro-scene for anyone who has not been able to grab one of the extremely wanted tickets for the concert last year.

Founded in 2008 by guitarist Pier Gonella (Necrodeath) and vocalist Giorgia Gueglio, Mastercastle soon became one of the leading forces in the European Power/Neoclassical Metal scene, thanks to an addictive mix of strong riffs, virtuoso guitar solos and captivating female vocals, developed through each of their four, critically acclaimed albums. After having signed a new deal with Scarlet Records,
Mastercastle are currently in the studio to complete the recordings of their fifth, upcoming album 'Enfer De La Bibliothèque Nationale', out this fall. This new work, inspired by the different meanings and aspects of "censorship", has been described by the band as their heaviest effort to date, while still maintaining their trademark sound and with a special mention for the strongest production the band have ever benefited from. A very special guest appearance by Andrea De Paoli (Labyrinth, Vision Divine) is also confirmed.
Zola Jesus has revealed more details, including cover art and tracklisting for her forthcoming album, Taiga, out 6 October 2014 on Mute. Following select US performances, she heads to the UK and Europe for a series of dates starting on 29 October in Bristol and including a London show at KOKO on 18 November, full details below.
Nika is the 25-year-old behind Zola Jesus’ creative incarnations as sole singer and songwriter. Influenced by her time in Iceland, Vermont, and British Columbia, Taiga was written on Vashon Island, WA and conjures all these places while creating a sonic space of its own that each listener can travel to, explore, hide in, and celebrate. Nika tracked and mixed the album in Los Angeles with co-producer Dean Hurley (David Lynch, Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse).
At once challenging and accessible, Taiga is a transition for Zola Jesus. Undeniably branded with what Nika terms a “piercing ambition,” the album is best described by the artist herself: “The music on the record is massive, with big brass and beats, crystal clear vocals…It’s the most accessible music I’ve ever made, but also the most earnest and passionate. I gave everything for this record, more than ever before.”
