New album by Automat

20th of March 2014, 13:11

Three pilots. One recipe. A construction manual. Machine. Apparatus. Arbeit, Färber, zeitblom. The 3 musicians have been collaborating as ‘Automat’ since the end of 2011. Their debut features Lydia Lunch, Genesis P-Orridge & Blixa Bargeld. It's a Berlin affair.

Jochen Arbeit, the guitarist who came to world prominence with Die Haut and Einstürzende Neubauten; Achim Färber, a sought-after drummer with the likes of Project Pitchfork, Prag or Phillip Boa; and finally the bassist zeitblom, known from Sovetskoe Foto and through his award winning radio play works.

Automat, a constant groooove. An album, as you would imagine flying to be if you have never flown: a steady glide from leaving the apartment to reaching the destination. Automat tells of Berlin, once a city with 4 airports. Tempelhof makes the start: reverberating cowbells, an urgent bass sequence, chopped meanderings, an evil recollection that reminds of its heyday. Schönefeld, where the guitars flange and the delays bounce. Gatow swings to the Ebow. And Tegel. No question. Tegel grooves most elegantly. We would not have expected anything less.

Three narratives – of a lake with a menacing name, of an enchanted mountain, of strange roads – feature within Automat's otherwise instrumental epic. Three guests, three additional voices and storytellers to speak to us: Lydia Lunch, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and Blixa Bargeld. Chimera of Transgression. Guests, yes, but actually they are much more: old acquaintances, good friends, trusted colleagues. You can hear how they work their way into the pieces without taking them over, but lending that certain something and thus contributing to the idea of a band. Lighthouses.

Automat is naturally the sum of its parts, and all of them have learned and taught during the post-punk era. One may recall the time the mid-1980s, when the UK industrial-oriented artists discovered dance music. Automat docks onto that – sawing, ringing guitars and dub-reggae bass lines meet in empty hangars with harsh, slow breakbeat rhythms garnished by ticking percussion instruments from the most exciting and remote places on earth – and takes the dance into the present day.

Second Run DVD releases Celluloid Man

19th of March 2014, 17:20

Celluloid Man is a tribute to film archivist and obsessive cinephile P.K. Nair, a man whose childhood fascination with cinema finally led to the creation of the National Film Archive of India. In a country where film preservation was once regarded as irrelevant, Nair’s has been

a long, hard fight to preserve precious pieces of India’s film heritage that would otherwise be lost forever.

Featuring wonderful clips and interviews with many Indian and international filmmakers, this award-winning documentary (receiving here it's world premiere release on DVD) is both a portrait of a man’s passion with film and a love letter to cinema.

The DVD is presented in a new transfer, approved by the director; and the special features include a newly filmed, exclusive interview with the director, Dolby 5.1 audio option and a 20-page booklet featuring an essay by filmmaker, curator and author Mark Cousins and extracts from the director's own production diaries.

Release date: 14 April 2014

New album by Ataraxia in the shops

19th of March 2014, 17:16

Regular edition of the all new album, in Jewel box with 12 page booklet! Ataraxia in their own words on their new album: “Is this the bitter-sweet side of ourselves? We portray great misery, of course, and a typically human desperate need of survival but, at the same time, joke and irony are always present to exorcise the fear of decay and death. Here we are just musicians playing airs that make you dance and cry at the same time, and while doing this we say to ourselves: “Take your bloody knife and start exploring your killing nature, be not politically correct, sing and play as a fucking gorgon if you wish and have fun". “Paris Spleen” and the following “Spasms” are works in progress, both musically and as live performances, and our main actor Paul Patchy is just a disseminator of chaos.”
