Synopsis
Hideaki ITO stars as the teacher from Hell, in Takashi MIIKE's outrageous, blood-splattered, high school horror.
Cool and charismatic English teacher Seiji Hasumi (ITO) is popular with students and teachers alike. He inspires trust and respect from his class, greeting many with an affectionate, if irritating, ruffle of the hair. But his actions soon take a turn, revealing something dark behind that charming smile. Students become suspicious when friends slowly start to disappear, but little do they know that absolute jaw-dropping carnage is just around the corner.
Adapted from Yusuke KISHI’s horror novel, Aku no Kyōten, a commentary on tough high school life and dark student–teacher relationships, with plenty of black humour, absurd violence, and a splash of Cronenbergian fantasy added for good measure.
Director, Takashi Miike Biography
Born on August 24, 1960. After studying under Shohei Imamura and a number of other directors, he made his debut in 1991 and has directed many productions of various genres since then. His innovative ideas and edgy direction are highly praised in and out of the country, and he has enthusiastic fans all over the world. In 1997, along with John Woo, he ranked as the tenth most promising film directors chosen by “Time” magazine in the U.S. In 2000, “Audition” won the International Film Critics Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. In 2003, “Gokudo kyofu dai-gekijo: Gozu” was shown during the Directors’ Fortnight of the Cannes International Film Festival and received accolades from critics. In 2006, “Big Bang Love, Juvenile A” was shown in the Berlin International Film Festival. In 2010, “13 Assassins” was in the competition section of the Venice International Film Festival, and in 2011, “Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai” was in the competition section of the Cannes International Film Festival. Miike is one of the most promising directors of our time.
Densely layered, complex and atmospheric, Subconscious Landscapes sees Velvet Acid Christ pushing the boundaries further than ever. The act’s 16th studio album, the new record calls on influences in the ranges of Juno Reactor, Massive Attack, and Delerium. This album can be considered a natural progression from the hypnotic grooves of past VAC songs such as “Slut”. “Dilauded”, & “Ghost in the Circuit”.
Subconscious Landscapes seems to flow between two halves of an album, with the first four songs being highlighted by guest vocals from Sabine Theroni of Psykkle on “Barbed Wire Garden” and “Taste the Sin”, as well as Malgorzata Wacht on vocals for “Grey”. The second half, entitled “Mauvais” on side B of the vinyl version, takes a decidedly darker turn of sound. The new album also marks the first EVER vinyl release for Velvet Acid Christ.

Baran, a Kurdish independence war hero, is now sheriff in Erbil, the capital city. No longer feeling useful in this society now at peace, he thinks about quitting the police force, but instead agrees to be stationed in a small valley, at the very borders of Iran, Turkey, and Iraq. It is a lawless territory, right at the heart of illegal drug, medication and alcohol trafficking. Having arrived in the small village, he refuses to bow down to Aga Azzi, the seriously corrupt tribal chief and absolute ruler of the area. Baran meets Govend, the village school teacher, who is also rejected by the villagers. Like Baran, she represents another law, that of the young and autonomous Kurdish state. Govend is all the more vulnerable as she is not a married woman.

Four days before New York noise musician Margaret Chardiet was supposed leave for her first European tour as Pharmakon, she had a medical emergency which resulted in a major surgery. Suddenly, instead of getting on a plane, she was bedridden for three weeks, missing an organ.
“After seeing internal photographs taken during the surgery, I became hyperaware of the complex network of systems just beneath the skin, any of which were liable to fail or falter at any time,” Chardiet said. “It all happened so fast and unexpectedly that my mind took a while to catch up to the reality of my recovery. I felt a widening divide between my physical and mental self. It was as though my body had betrayed me, acting as a separate entity from my consciousness. I thought of my corporeal body anthropomorphically, with a will or intent of its own, outside of my will's control, and seeking to sabotage. I began to explore the idea of the conscious mind as a stranger inside an autonomous vessel, and the tension that exists between these two versions of the self.” Consumed by these ideas, and unable to leave her bed, Chardiet occupied herself by writing the lyrics and music that would become Bestial Burden, the second Pharmakon LP for Sacred Bones Records.
The record is a harrowing collection of deeply personal industrial noise tracks, each one brimming with struggle and weighted with the intensity of Chardiet’s internal conflict. Bestial Burden was recorded at Heaven Street Records in Brooklyn, N.Y. with Sean Ragon (Cult of Youth, Venerence), who also recorded 2013’s critically acclaimed Abandon. That album led to extensive touring with Swans, Godflesh, and The Haxan Cloak, as well as a litany of glowing press from the likes of Pitchfork, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Fader and more.
As an avid listener of noise, industrial, and power electronics, Ragon understood that the usual rules of recording sometimes need to be thrown out the window to capture the best possible performance. He allowed Chardiet to experiment with a mix of live recording and tracking, and some of the vocals were recorded live with a group of people packed into the studio so she could feed off their energy. The result of those sessions is the bar-raising follow-up to Abandon, and an invitation to go even deeper into the sometimes terrifying, always fascinating labyrinth that is Margaret Chardiet’s mind.
