Hot off the heels from the release of Fogs and Crimes Season 2, these new releases continue with the arrival of The Spider, the classic Danish series which first aired in 2000. Several cast members from The Spider would go on to star in the most popular Danish shows such as The Killing and Borgen. Released on DVD 15th June 2015, the DVD will feature all 6 episodes.
Copenhagen 1949. When young, idealistic journalist Bjarne Madsen (Jakob Cedergren) receives a tip-off about organised crime and black marketeering on a grand scale he decides to unravel the threads of the extensive network and work his way to the “Spider” himself. A highly esteemed crime reporter tries to dissuade him, but Bjarne is fearless—even when it transpires that there may be links from the Copenhagen underworld leading to the top echelons of the police force.
The Spider features an array of well-known Danish stars of series such as The Killing, Borgen & The Legacy, including Lars Mikkelsen, Stine Stengade, Bjarne Henriksen, Trine Dyrholm and Nikolaj Lie Kaas.

Synopsis
After producing Stuart Gordon’s hit Re-Animator, Brian Yuzna (Bride of Re-Animator, Return of the Living Dead III) turned his hand to directing with 1989’s Society, and gave birth to one of the ickiest, most original body horror shockers of all time.
Teenager Bill Whitney (Billy Warlock) has always felt like the odd one out in his wealthy, upper-class Beverly Hills family. For some reason, he just doesn’t seem to fit in. But his sense of alienation takes a sinister turn when he hears an audio recording of his sister’s coming-out party, which seems to implicate his family and others in a bizarre, ritualistic orgy. And then there are the strange things he’s been seeing – glimpses of people with their bodies contorted impossibly out of shape… Is Bill going mad or is there something seriously amiss in his neighbourhood?
Packing stomach-churning gore and thought-provoking social commentary in equal measure, Society is a biting horror satire which culminates in one of the most gag-inducing “climaxes”’ in all of horror history.

Het verhaal
Wanneer we Everly (Salma Hayek) voor het eerst ontmoeten, strompelt ze naakt een badkamer binnen. Op haar rug kronkelt een Japanse tatoeage, maar Everly is duidelijk in gewond… en duidelijk in paniek.
Al snel ontdekken we dat de knappe dame een gevangen prostituee is die politie-informant is geworden om het misdaadsyndicaat van haar gewetenloze baas, Taiko (Hiroyuki Watanabe) ten val te brengen. Jammer genoeg is Taiko te weten gekomen wat haar intenties zijn en hij is dan ook begrijpelijkerwijs niet zo in zijn nopjes. Everly zelf beseft dat ze niet lang meer te leven heeft nu de yakuza achter haar aan zit en probeert haar moeder – die ze al lang niet meer gezien heeft – op te bellen om haar zoontje in veiligheid te laten brengen. Ook aan de andere kant van de lijn blijken Taiko’s sterke mannen echter klaar te staan om de nodige vernieling aan te richten. Het noopt Everly om zich te verweren tegen golf na golf tot de tanden bewapende schurken…
De film
Het succes van Everly gaat eigenlijk al terug tot 2010, toen het scenario van deze ultragewelddadige maar sterk gestileerde film de eer kreeg om op de ‘Blacklist’ van dat jaar te staan. Dat is een lijst met de meest geliefde nog niet verfilmde films van het jaar. Kate Hudson (The Skeleton Key, Glee) zou de hoofdrol vertolken, maar die actrice stapte uiteindelijk uit het project toen de voorbereidingen te lang begonnen te duren. Met Salma Hayek als vervangster werd er prompt beslist om de persoonlijkheid van het hoofdpersonage wat aan te passen. Het resultaat is deze keer eens niet een stevige, perfect getrainde vrouwelijke krijger à la Kill Bill, maar wel een zwakkere heldin met een enorme overlevingsdrang die aanvankelijk nog niet zo goed om kan met wapens… maar dat wel erg snel leert.
Everly hoort thuis in het rijtje films met daarin titels als Die Hard, White House Down, Kill Bill en John Wick, maar vindt ook een geheel eigen toon door een vrouw in het centrum van de actie te plaatsen en bijna alle actie te laten plaatsvinden in een enkel appartement. Hayek maakt een grootse indruk als getormenteerde antiheldin, terwijl er geregeld geknipoogd wordt naar andere films en het geweld soms zo knap in beeld wordt gebracht dat je het gevoel krijgt naar een bewegend schilderij te zitten kijken… eentje met een kader waar Salma Hayek, die nog werd genomineerd voor een Oscar en al 13 keer in de prijzen viel, zich merkbaar enorm thuis in voelt nu ze voor een keer zelf de wapens mag hanteren. Tel daarbij nog een hele resem aan kleurrijke personages als de Sadist (Togo Igawa), een reeks collega-prostituees, de stervende Japanner die enkel gekend staat als ‘Dead Man’ (Akie Kotabe) omdat hij Everly probeert te helpen terwijl hij in een zetel zit dood te bloeden en natuurlijk Taiko zelf, en je weet dat je een spannend kijkstuk in handen hebt.
