De schuchtere tiener Marie is een buitenbeentje. Samen met haar overbezorgde vader en zieke moeder leeft ze een teruggetrokken bestaan in een vissersdorpje aan de Deense kust. Marie kruipt uit haar schulp wanneer ze een baantje bij de visverwerking krijgt. Maar ze ontdekt ook dat er onder haar dorpsgenoten een grote angst voor haar en haar familie leeft. Terwijl haar lichaam begint te veranderen, ontdekt ze welk geheim haar ouders voor haar verborgen houden.
