Today it’s been exactly 27 years since Nine Inch Nails released Broken (EP)
Today it’s been exactly 27 years since Nine Inch Nails released its first EP Broken (September 22, 1992). The EP was produced by frontman Trent Reznor and Flood and entirely consists of new material. The synth-pop style from the band's 1989 debut album Pretty Hate Machine was replaced by a heavier sound that would act as a precursor to their second album The Downward Spiral (1994). One of the reasons for this drastic change in sound and style being TVT Records, who had signed the band, pressuring Trent Reznor to record a similar synth-pop album as follow-up after the success of the previous Pretty Hate Machine album. As a reaction to this attempt to interfere with his artistic and creative freedom Reznor secretly started recording with Flood under various monikers to prevent TVT Records from confiscating and releasing their recordings.
In the end, a deal was reached with Interscope Records to release future Nine Inch Nails releases.
The accompanying short movie Broken, filmed and directed by Peter Christopherson (Trobbing Gristle / Coil / …) and based on a scenario by Trent Reznor, was never officially released due to its extreme graphic content but was leaked as a bootleg which became heavily traded amongst fans.
Although the videos were widely censored from television airplay, the song Wish made the band win the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance (1993) while their Woodstock '94 performance of Happiness in Slavery won the same award at the 38th Grammy Awards (1996).
Broken peaked at the seventh rank on the US billboard 200 chart.
The original release of Broken was limited to 250.000 copies and included two bonus tracks on a separate 3" CD including a cover version of Physical, a song originally by Adam Ant, and Suck which Reznor had co-written with all-star industrial band Pigface.
A remix EP titled Fixed (with blue cover) was released late 1992.

"As far as the music goes, the intro melody of "Black Box" is actually Morse code for COD which was an international distress call before SOS. The idea for the lyrics came from Caleb and I joking around about how we should colonize the sun because there's no proof that the sun is hot. We started talking about sending humanity to the sun in droves to start a new life. Pack some SPF 30!" - Eddie LaFlash (Decent News)

"Monolith is a big step up in craft and aesthetics for Decent News. While earlier album Filth found the band in promising industrial territory, this new album finds the band firing on all creative cylinders. Decent News amps up relentlessly heavy riffage, digitized percussion, gritty warehouse club rhythms, and rugged vocals." - New CT Metal
Biography:
Caleb Moore: Vocals, Programming
Eddie LaFlash: Guitar, Vocals, Synth and Programming
Laken Stokes: Bass Guitar, Programming
Bruce: Legs
Founded in 2016 by Eddie LaFlash (Guitar, Synth, Vocals), Collin Maynard (Drums, Synths), and Laken Stokes (Bass Guitar, Vocals, Synth), the project's first self-titled demo was released on October 13th, 2017.
Though raw and gritty, these songs would serve as the foundation for the project and would eventually come back to life on future releases. However, it only took Decent News two months to start seeing their true potential as they fired off their next single “Skin Puddle / Deafland” on December 8th, 2017. This release saw the emergence of Caleb Moore taking over vocal duties and also served as a teaser for their upcoming debut album “Filth.” From an amateur understanding of recording and producing, the clean cut sound found on “Skin Puddle / Deafland” was eons away from anything on their demo. Taking cues from such band as KMFDM and Front Line Assembly, the project produced two pummeling tracks of pure mayhem.
January of 2018 found Decent News hyping up their upcoming album “Filth” with a brand new single titled 'Halogen'. With the help of their newfound record label Machine Man Records, the band was able to reach a wider audience and infect them with their destructive synthesized metal and industrial hybrid. With a demo, two singles, and a new record label signing under their belt, it was finally time for Decent News to unleash their ultimate beast.
In March of 2018, Decent News released their twelve track album “Filth” via Machine Man Records. Once again tapping into their roots as a savage blend of industrial mayhem, metal noise, and pounding percussion, “Filth” serves as the perfect introductory point for anyone trying to understand what Decent News is all about. The simplistic cover art of the album (Designed by Conner Michael) showcasing what is basically a crack house addicted and devoted to the television, “Filth” came to be a stark socio-political commentary in the modern age. “Filth” was released in both limited edition CD and digital formats, with a Decent News logo decal also available for ordering.
Decent News was not content with just releasing “Filth” and leaving it alone. Instead, the project decided to bring along a massive amount of talent from the likes of industrial rockers Chmcl Str8jckt to the post-apocalyptic pop of Ferus Melek for a brand new remix album. “Filth: Remixed” released via Machine Man Records on August 3rd and contains another helping of industrial chaos produced from bands in the international scene.
Just before "Filth" released, Laken took a break from the band as he became a new dad. This had Collin moving over to bass for a few shows before to left the band to focus on school. In August of 2018 Eddie and Caleb started churning out demos for their next release on top of playing live shows all over Southern New England, sharing the stage with many acts such as Tovarish, Acidhenge and Wavepeak. In early January of 2019, the two boys sat down for breakfast with Laken and his newborn daughter at one of their favorite diners to catch up on things. By the end of their breakfast Laken was a member of the band again and ready to dive head first into recording.
In June of 2019 the boys released their latest single "Black Box / Krokodil". These two tracks were light-years away from their debut in production and quality all thanks to Michael Haggerty from Krebs who would be mixing and mastering their sophomore album "Monolith."
"Monolith" was released on Machine Man Records on August 30th 2019.
"Remember when indie rock sounded all grimy, corroded and metal-sludgy -- the last thing you'd hear in a commercial or being played at an arena show? Warish do. It's music to the ears of anyone who wants to damage their ears." -- Rolling Stone
"Warish totally rules... An awesome mixture of punk energy, biker rock fuzz, and grunge growl." -- Kerrang!
"Sludgy and punk-y at the same time, with an Iggy and the Stooges meets Misfits vibe, plus a bit of stoner rock and metal mixed in, as well." -- Consequence of Sound
Southern California trio Warish are streaming their forthcoming full length debut Down In Flames in its entirety today ahead of release via Metal Injection. Hear full album HERE!
Loudwire premiered “Healter Skelter” here!
Warish hit the road this fall in support of the album with San Francisco stoner rock progenitors Acid King, who will also reissue their legendary Busse Woods album on RidingEasy on August 30th. Please see all dates below.
Imagine if early, weird Aberdeen Nirvana were crossed with low budget horror-obsessed garage-punks. You'd have sinister vibes with a visceral, twisted weirdness and bludgeoning riffs. Some might call it nightmarish, we call it Warish.
Warish is a very newly minted SoCal trio formed early 2018 that has wasted no time making its presence known. The band formed when guitarist/vocalist and pro-skater Riley Hawk (son of skating legend Tony Hawk) and drummer Nick (Broose) McDonnell decided they wanted to try their hand at something more distinct than they'd done previously.
"We wanted to do simpler riffs and a fun live show," Riley explains. "A little more punk, a little bit of grunge... a little evil-ish."
Their sound takes cues from a variety of cool underground sounds and twists it all into an energetic and exciting fist to the face of dark fury. Hawk's effect-laden vocals hearken to 90s industrial monsters Ministry and David Yow's tortured caterwaul in Scratch Acid. The guitars are heavy and powerful, though decidedly not straightforward cookie cutter punk; more like Cobain's and Buzz Osbourne's wiry contortions. The rhythms bash and pummel right through it all with aggressive force ensuring that nothing gets overly complicated and the horrors keep coming throughout the band's uh, warlike assault.
Down In Flames will be available on LP, CD and download on September 13th, 2019 via Riding Easy Records.

Such Beautiful Flowers premières first video from upcoming Wool-E Tapes release.
Neon Gloom is the first video taken from the 4 track cassette EP of the same name that will be released on 12 October (Cassette Store Day) by Belgian label Wool-E Tapes, mostly known for releasing the debut EP by Belgian post-punk wonder-kids Whispering Sons
Such Beautiful Flowers’ debut EP “NEON GLOOM” places us in a sonic space where darkwave and synth-dominated industrial beats give shape to a sound echoing The Neon Judgement and New Order, playing in the same field as contempory artists like Cold Cave and Lust For Youth. Lyrically these four tracks paint a bleak picture of love, truth and existence amongst the ruins of a postmodern world. As the front-man of one of Europe’s most critically acclaimed hardcore punk outfits “Midnight Souls” Donny has been pouring his passion into heartfelt music for years. But where the rest of this five piece reinvented themselves as shoegazing indie darlings NEW MOON, he now embarks on this solo venture, trading feral screams for dark romanticism, keeping the brutal honesty and honest brutality from his previous endeavors but wrapping it in sombre voiced melodic poetry. Recorded and mixed at MuchluvStudio’s (Brutus, Fär..) and mixed at AudioSiege (Stranger Things OST, Ceremony, Touché Amoré..) this EP is a starting point and only gives us a glimpse of what is yet to come.
First concerts to be expected in November/December
