ANNOUNCES VINYL REISSUE OF ‘EXSOLVE’ / RELEASED 4TH OCTOBER
TOURING WITH EMMA RUTH RUNDLE IN SEPTEMBER
Internationally acclaimed composer and virtuoso cellist Jo Quail has today launched her own label AdderStone Records with the first release being the vinyl re-issue of last year’s album ‘Exsolve’. Released on 4th October the double vinyl edition of ‘Exsolve' has been specially remastered for this format, and includes a brand new (fourth) track 'Reya Pavan’. Jo comments,
I set up AdderStone Records largely as a vehicle for my own releases, and 'Exsolve' as a special edition, double vinyl will be my first. The idea of my own label has been in discussion for a while but in the last 12 months my profile has grown and this seems like a great way to draw attention to my previous albums for a new audience. I love the metal festivals and bands I’ve been part of this year but my influences are wide and eclectic. I want to maintain my own identity and I hope drawing my work together under Adderstone Records can aid that.
I intend to work backwards through my albums to make vinyl re-mastered editions of now-sold-out earlier releases, with Five Incantations coming out in early 2020, including a very special bonus track.
In the future I'd like to record and release some of my orchestral and ensemble works through AdderStone Records. I've always been independent and self-released, and I'm very happy to continue doing so until such time as I can't carry everything to the post office every day (!) though a logical step in the future will be to look for a partner in distribution. It is an ambitious undertaking to set up AdderStone Records and put out these releases but at the same time it feels good and right to have a 'home' for my music.' I have very talented people around me whose opinions I value and trust and who will always offer salient advice so I don’t feel I’m alone.
Whether it’s a CD or vinyl the overall look and feel of the finished package is all part of it for me and I value being able to maintain control of that area of production. The artwork, sleeve notes and packaging are a part of the whole creative process and as such I feel should reflect the individual journey of each album in the various stages of composing, recording and producing the music and I refuse to compromise on this ethos. All of my CD releases have been uniquely packaged with several layers within the artwork itself, there for discovery should you so wish! With the physically larger format offered by vinyl sleeves I can be even more detailed with my packaging, which might be difficult to do under someone else’s label.
Over the past few years Jo Quail has been touring extensively across Europe performing alongside the likes of Boris, Amenra, Caspian, God is an Astronaut, Myrkur, MONO, Årabrot, and Winterfylleth. Festival performances include ArcTanGent, WGT, Dunk!, Tramlines Festival, Handmade Festival, two separate concerts at the invitation of Robert Smith for his curation of the Southbank's Meltdown Festival and most recently Hellfest. To support the release of this re-issue Jo will be touring the UK with Emma Ruth Rundle, followed by an appearance at Damnation Festival in Leeds.
‘Exsolve’ was originally recorded with Chris Fielding at Skyhammer Studios (Electric Wizard, Primordial, Witchsorrow) and released in November 2018 leading to coverage from the likes of Metal Hammer, Prog Magazine, Echoes and Dust, Zero Tolerance, Cross Eyed Pianist and Distorted Sound. Most recently Jo was nominated in the Limelight category at the upcoming Progressive Music Awards. Commenting on the artwork for the vinyl re-issue Jo adds,
'The packaging is beautiful, featuring the original artwork of Christian Fletcher, the cover is embossed and debossed, the sleeves and inserts contain imagery from Simon Kallas plus my own notation, and there is a new set of accompanying sleeve notes from Adrian Ainsworth.'
As with the original three tracks on Exsolve new piece 'Reya Pavan' began from the same thematic motif with Jo stating, 'I worked with this, played with this, improvised around this and found, as with all the tracks, that this starting motif didn't actually feature in the finished work. I wanted to pay tribute if you like to this thematic inspiration, so I have handwritten 'Maquette' as I've named it, and included this as sheet music for solo cello within the sleeve of the vinyl edition.’

Wormwood present their video for “Av Lie och Börda” from their new album "Nattarvet” out now on Black Lodge Records
Something that seems to have been forgotten here in Sweden is our sorrowful history of the crop failure during the 19th century. For several years in the 19th century, Sweden was hit by different crop failures and famines. WORMWOOD's stories focus specifically on 1867-1869. Although it is generally known that famine hit Sweden, it is not so many who know the fate of people and how they lived their lives.
The fate and journey of the ordinary Swede is what WORMWOOD has focused on. What happened when the grain was unusable because of the extremely hot and dry summer? What sacrifices were made when the last cattle had died? How did the Church aid people who asked for help during the endless winter of 1867? How did the most isolated villages get help when everything around them was covered with metres of snow? WORMWOOD does not answer everything but their poetic perspective gives us a hint of what happened.
Of Scythe and Burden is not about a specific family, it is an amalgamation of the fate of several families. We follow a nameless family in the summer of 1869 in the suites of two disastrous previous years. The father of the family has begun to show early symptoms of a life threatening disease after years of tough living. He sees that the only way to save the family is to sell what little they have left and let his wife and child travel to America while he stays with his farm. Too proud to leave his country, he stays until the only way out is to take his own life, with the help of arsenic, just as many others have done before. In feverish dreams, misery and a melancholic hope that his wife and child can survive the long journey, he thinks about life, death and what comes after.
The video is mostly recorded locally in Roslagen, in authentic environments, with mountainscapes from Jämtland among other things. The music has several different passages that symbolize the different feelings this man felt during these difficult years. Everything from calm and melancholic melodies to raw and fast parts, which convey different kinds of moods. WORMWOOD wants the lyrics and the music to hold your hand on this journey while also making you think and reflect. Do not see this as a page in a history book; see it as a tribute and transportation to a place in Sweden where the people struggled for survival and those who will eventually be forgotten.

This month, 36 years ago, Nitzer Ebb recorded their first demo Basic Pain Procedure!
This month, 36 years ago, British EBM/Industrial act Nitzer Ebb recorded their first eight songs which were featured on the A-side of their first ever release/demo tape Basic Pain Procedure (August 1983). On the B-side they put a live recording of a concert in Chelmsford from 9th December the same year. Initially it was meant to attract the attention from record labels but the tape was also sold at their live concerts. Two years later they would meet producer, Phil Harding, who produced their 1985 debut single ‘Isn't It Funny How Your Body Works?’ and helped them set up their own label, Power Of Voice Communications.
Besides ‘Crane’, which was re-recorded and placed on the B-side of their first 12”, and the song ‘Home’, which was re-worked into K.I.A. for the 1988 Belief album, it seemed all other tracks where archived, never to be heard again...
Luckily, for NEB fans around the globe, Basic Pain Procedure was officially re-released in it’s entirety, to celebrate it’s 30th anniversary, on CD, USB and tape in June 2013. The vinyl re-issue version however, only features the eight original studio recordings and thus not the live 1983 performance.

On their 2018 demo In Splendour & Sedation, bassist I.R. and guitarist S.M., both of whom are singing, and drummer M.K. cultivated an atmospheric, heavy and heady mixture of post rock with doom that sounded both familiar and fresh. E-L-R also already caused quite a stir on tour with Amenra.
As individuals, they are deeply rooted in their environment; as a group, they share a shamanist quality and acute spiritual awareness with Austrians Our Survival Depends On Us or Finnish folkists Hexvessel. According to I.R., their "music is very visceral. We want the listener to delve into our sphere and become entranced in order to feel our energy."
The first common project of their collaboration with E-L-R is titled "Mænad" and offers - apart from guest appearances by Ryanne van Dorst (Dool) and Colin van Eeckhout (Amenra) - panoramic post doom for your inner cinema: a tale in different stages wherein emotions are constantly shifting like landscapes in passing. "It's mainly our own interpretation of texts and poems, combined with things we lived through ourselves," explains I.R., "often describing sceneries and events or feelings." Summing up their sound, she speaks of "hypnotic rhythms suspended in a haze of eternal reverberation."
